Chapter no 19

Never Lie

This is session 89 with GW, a 68-year-old widow who suffers from paranoid delusions.

โ€œHello, Dr. Hale.โ€

โ€œPlease have a seat, Gail.โ€

โ€œOh. Yes. Of course. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t apologize. I want you to be comfortable when weโ€™re talking.โ€

โ€œYes. I know. I justโ€ฆ I feel likeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAre you okay? You seem especially anxious today. Your hands are shaking.โ€

โ€œI justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAre you taking the medications I prescribed?โ€ โ€œNo. Iโ€™m afraid not.โ€

โ€œHow come?โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€ฆ I know youโ€™re going to tell me Iโ€™m being paranoid if I tell you this.โ€

โ€œTell me.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I think my pharmacist is trying to kill me.โ€ โ€œGailโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI know. You think Iโ€™m crazy. You think Iโ€™m paranoid. But this time, itโ€™s true. I mean, heโ€™s a pharmacist. It would be so easy for him to do it. He could just swap out my pills for something else.โ€

โ€œWhy would you think he wants to kill you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the way he looks at me. I canโ€™t describe it. And after he handed me the bag with my pills in it, he winked at me.โ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you see, Dr. Hale? He was winking at me because he knew there was something bad in the pill bottles.โ€

โ€œMaybe he was just being friendly? Or even flirting?โ€ โ€œNo. Definitely not.โ€

โ€œWhy would he want to kill you?โ€

โ€œWho knows? Because heโ€™s a psychopath. You know, people are walking around out there who are just crazy. They donโ€™t need a reason to kill you. They just do it because theyโ€™re crazy!โ€

โ€œGail, I need you to take your medications.โ€

โ€œBut I canโ€™t! Donโ€™t you see what Iโ€™m saying? If I take those pills, Iโ€™m going to die!โ€

โ€œDo you remember when you thought the mailman was trying to kill you?โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€

โ€œGail? Was he actually trying to kill you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m still not sure. I mean, itโ€™sย possible. He was always outside my house at the same time. Right outside my door. Peeking in.โ€

โ€œHe was delivering your mail, Gail.โ€

โ€œThere was something funny about it.โ€

โ€œThe mailman was not trying to kill you. And your pharmacist is not trying to kill you. You really need to take the medications that I prescribed.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what my son says too.โ€

โ€œSo there you go. You should listen to him.โ€

โ€œBut think about it, Dr. Hale. If I were to die, my son would get a big insurance payoff. So he doesnโ€™t mind if the pharmacist kills me.โ€

โ€œGail, listen. You have to try to recognize that thisโ€ฆ thisโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œHold on. I justโ€ฆ My phone buzzed. I have to make sure itโ€™s not an emergency with one of my patients. Itโ€™sโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDr. Hale?โ€

โ€œHang on.โ€

โ€œDr. Hale? Is everything okay? What does your text message say?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Gail. Iโ€™m afraid weโ€™re going to have to reschedule our appointment. An emergency has come up.โ€
