Chapter no 32

The Wife Upstairs

What sort of man cheats on his wife with another woman on their wedding night?

I contemplate that question in my head as I watch Adam sleep beside me. As handsome as he is, heโ€™s even more attractive when heโ€™s asleep. He has this sexy stubble on his chin and his lips blow air softly in and out. After reading Victoriaโ€™s story about what happened on their wedding night, I didnโ€™t want to come to his room. But he was so nice and charming, it was hard to say no. He said all the right things, just like he said all the right things to Victoria to get her to forgive him. And here I am.

I need to stop. I need to tell him I canโ€™t do this anymore. I canโ€™t do it to Victoria. No matter what he says, I know she knows.

But itโ€™s harder than I thought. After all, look at what he did to herโ€” and she stayed with him. My situation is much worse. At least she had a good job. If I left, Iโ€™d have nothing. Not even a place to live. Of course, Freddy would let me stay with him, but no, I canโ€™t.

I donโ€™t know what to do.

While Adam is still asleep, I slip out of the bed and quietly leave the room. I had hoped to get back to my room without anybody noticing, but I nearly collide with Maggie, who is vacuuming the hallway. When she sees me sneaking out of Adamโ€™s bedroom, her eyes go wide.

โ€œOh,โ€ she gasps.

โ€œMaggie.โ€ I feel the heat in my cheeks. I did not want to run into Maggie, but itโ€™s better than running into Eva. โ€œThis isnโ€™t how it looksโ€ฆโ€

She cocks her head to the side. โ€œReally?โ€

I let out a breath. Iโ€™m not going to stand here and insult Maggieโ€™s intelligence. โ€œFine. It is how it looks.โ€ I glance at the closed door to Adamโ€™s bedroom. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean for it to happen though. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ I mean, Iโ€™ve been living here andโ€ฆ the house is so emptyโ€ฆ and coldโ€ฆโ€

Suddenly, I feel like Iโ€™m about to burst into tears.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ Maggie says quickly. โ€œI mean,ย Iย sure donโ€™t mind. I sort of suspected, to tell you the truth. I didnโ€™t want to say anything though.โ€ She smiles wryly. โ€œAnd itโ€™s not like I can blame you. Heย isย pretty hot.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t tell Eva.โ€

She throws back her head and laughs. โ€œYeah, that would involve me having a conversation with Eva. No way. Donโ€™t worry, Sylvie. Your secret is safe with me. I swear.โ€ She hesitates and looks down the hall at Victoriaโ€™s bedroom. โ€œJust make sure Victoria doesnโ€™t find out.โ€

I frown. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Maggie lowers her voice a notch. โ€œAdam thinks Victoria has no clue whatโ€™s going on, but heโ€™s wrong. Her speech is messed up, but she knows exactly whatโ€™s going on around her.โ€ She squints at me. โ€œYou know it too, donโ€™t you?โ€

I nod slowly.

โ€œIโ€™ve been working here since Victoria and Adam first moved in,โ€ Maggie says, โ€œand let me tell you, Victoria is a very jealous woman.โ€

I get this sick feeling at the pit of my stomach. โ€œShe is?โ€

โ€œYes,ย very.โ€ Maggie hesitates. โ€œThis is just between you and me, right?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

She leans in very close to me so that sheโ€™s nearly talking into my ear. โ€œSo we used to have this woman here who did gardening and cooking. Irina. But Victoria was insanely jealous of her. Almost obsessed. She thought Irina and Adam were sleeping together.โ€

Irina. The one who used to live in Glen Head. The place Victoria mentions every few days, with what seems like increasing urgency. This canโ€™t be a coincidence, can it?

โ€œWere they sleeping together?โ€ I ask in a voice thatโ€™s barely a whisper. Maggie doesnโ€™t answer right away. She glances around the hallway. โ€œI donโ€™t know for sure, but I donโ€™t think they were. But on the other hand, it wouldnโ€™t have surprised me. Adam and Victoriaโ€ฆ They did not have a

good marriage.โ€

This isnโ€™t entirely a revelation based on what Iโ€™ve been reading in Victoriaโ€™s diary. But hearing it from an outsider just confirms what I suspected to be true.

โ€œAnyway.โ€ Maggie straightens up and brushes off her jeans. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t be gossiping. Every marriage has its problems, right?โ€

Right. Itโ€™s not like I can talk. The closest thing I ever had to a husband was Freddy, and that was a disaster.

โ€œThanks for telling me,โ€ I say.

Maggie winks at me and gets the vacuum started again. โ€œNo problem.

Justโ€ฆ you know, be careful.โ€

Iโ€™d feel a whole lot better if people would stop warning me to be careful.
