Chapter no 25

The Wife Upstairs

Victoria is especially lethargic today. I wasnโ€™t able to feed her any of her lunch, and dinner is going just as badly. She seems listless as I offer her spoonfuls of purรฉed carrots. On the plus side, she hasnโ€™t given me any dirty looks for what happened last night.

I still canโ€™t quite understand how that water glass tipped over. Maybe I donโ€™t want to know.

Iโ€™ve been feeding her unsuccessfully for close to an hour when Adam peeks his head in. โ€œIs this a good time to give her some medications?โ€

Victoriaโ€™s eyes widen at his statement. This is the most awake she has seemed all day.

โ€œGive me another twenty minutes,โ€ I say. He nods. โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll be back.โ€

Victoria had a mouthful of carrots and some of them drip out of the right side of her mouth. I try to clean it away with a napkin, but she pushes me away. โ€œSylvie,โ€ she says.

Iโ€™ve noticed that whenever she says my name, she wants to tell me something important. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œNub.โ€ Her blue eyes are like saucers. โ€œAdam nub.โ€

I know now that sheโ€™s talking about a gun. But I donโ€™t know what sheโ€™s talking about. I have not seen a gun in this house. Iโ€™d think she was making it up if I didnโ€™t see that bullet hole.

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ She points at the wall. โ€œNub. In theโ€ฆโ€

I watch her face. Sheโ€™s struggling to come up with a word. It looks so frustrating. She knows exactly what she wants to say, but she canโ€™t say it. I can almost see the wheels turning in her brain, but sheโ€™s not going anywhere.

โ€œCoppit,โ€ she finally says triumphantly.

Well, great. I still have no idea what sheโ€™s talking about. โ€œCarpet?โ€ โ€œNo.ย No.โ€ She squeezes her eyes shut for a moment then opens them.

โ€œCoppit. Coppit. Theโ€ฆ coppit.โ€

No matter how many times she says it, itโ€™s still a nonsense word. But then I look at where sheโ€™s pointing. Sheโ€™s not pointing at the wall. Sheโ€™s

pointing at her closet. โ€œCloset?โ€ I ask.

She nods vigorously. โ€œYes. Adam coppit.โ€

Is she trying to tell me thereโ€™s a gun in her husbandโ€™s closet?

Well, maybe there is. And if so, is it that big a deal? I can imagine wanting to have a gun out here for protection. If he has a gun in his closet, thatโ€™s his business. Itโ€™s not like heโ€™s keeping it on a holster and swinging it around.

But thereโ€™s a pleading look in Victoriaโ€™s eyes. She wants me to get the gun. But I canโ€™t do that. He would fire me.

Anyway, I trust Adam to have a gun. Itโ€™s not that big a deal. โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ I tell Victoria. โ€œIโ€™ll take care of it.โ€

But I already know Iโ€™m going to do nothing.
