Chapter no 15

The Wife Upstairs

Could โ€œnubโ€ be Victoriaโ€™s Papasan chair?

No, probably not. But even so, it seems like she was very attached to that chair. What if I located Victoriaโ€™s chair downstairs and brought it up to her? Obviously, she couldnโ€™t sit in it very long, especially since she seems to have trouble supporting her own head, but considering how much she loved that chair, it might be worth a shot.

I imagine the look of surprise and happiness on her face when she sees her old chair. I have to do this.

First I have to figure out what the hell a Papasan chair is.

I google what a Papasan chair looks like. It sort of looks like a bowl. It doesnโ€™t seem terribly comfortable, honestly, but Iโ€™m not going to doubt Victoriaโ€™s word. In any case, I donโ€™t recall seeing it downstairs. But then again, I wasnโ€™t looking.

I head downstairs to the living room and find Maggie folding laundry on the sofa. She smiles brightly at me. Sheโ€™s always eager to take a break from her housework. โ€œHowโ€™s it going?โ€

I scan the living room quickly. Theyโ€™ve got an enormous sectional sofa, a lounge chair, a giant TV, and multiple bookcasesโ€ฆ but no chairs shaped like a dish. โ€œDo you know where Victoriaโ€™s Papasan chair is?โ€

Maggie looks at me blankly. โ€œHer what?โ€ โ€œPapasan chair.โ€

โ€œWhat the hell is that?โ€

Iโ€™m relieved Iโ€™m not the only person who didnโ€™t know what a Papasan chair is. โ€œItโ€™s a chair that kind of looks like a bowl. You sit in it.โ€ (Obviously. Itโ€™s a chair.)

She folds up a pair of khaki slacks that look like they belong to Adam. โ€œI havenโ€™t seen any chairs that look like bowls down here. Sorry.โ€

โ€œIs there a place where they store furniture?โ€

She frowns. โ€œMaybe the attic? Iโ€™m not sure. You should ask Adam.โ€

The last thing I want to do is bother Adam when heโ€™s helping Victoria with her hygiene. But itโ€™s been long enough now that I would hope heโ€™s done. He might be searching for me right now. So I carefully climb the

stairs to Victoriaโ€™s room, where sure enough, heโ€™s got her back in her wheelchair.

When he sees me standing in the doorway, he flashes a wide grin. โ€œHey. Perfect timing.โ€

โ€œI got a question for you.โ€ โ€œShoot.โ€

โ€œDo you have a Papasan chair here?โ€ His brows scrunch together. โ€œA what?โ€

Iโ€™m feeling less than optimistic that weโ€™re ever going to find this chair. โ€œItโ€™s a chair thatโ€™s sort of shaped like a bowl.โ€

He blinks a few times. โ€œDo you need an extra chair for your bedroom?โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€ฆโ€ This is hopeless. He has no idea what Iโ€™m talking about.

Obviously, at some point, Victoria got rid of the chair. โ€œNever mind.โ€

Adam pulls off the latex gloves he was wearing. โ€œBecause if you need any furniture, Iโ€™d be happy to get it for you. Just let me know.โ€

This man is exactly how Victoria described him. Heโ€™s so generous. Anything she asked for, he would get her. And then some. Heโ€™s so good- natured. He didnโ€™t deserve this to happen to him. And neither did she

Life is so unfair.
