Chapter no 15 – ELEVEN YEARS EARLIER

The Inmate

โ€œYou went on a date with Tracy Gifford?โ€

Kaylaโ€™s voice is so screechy that if it gets any higher, only dogs will be able to hear her. But I canโ€™t blame her because Iโ€™m feeling the same way. Tim went on aย dateย withย Tracy Gifford? How did that happen? In what universe did my neighbor go on a date with a dead girl?

โ€œTwo dates.โ€ Tim looks like he wants to disappear into the folds of the sofa. โ€œThatโ€™s it. It wasnโ€™t a big deal.โ€

โ€œNot a big deal!โ€ Kayla bursts out. I notice her thigh is no longer touching his. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, but thatโ€™s aย veryย big deal.โ€

Tim squirms. โ€œItโ€™s really not.โ€

Brandonโ€™s chiseled features are twisted in amusement. I always thought he looked like the handsome rich kid in every John Hughes movie. โ€œI underestimated you, Reese. Nice going. Did you score with her?โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Timโ€™s face is turning red. โ€œI told you, it was just two dates.โ€ โ€œExactly,โ€ Brandon says.

โ€œChrist.โ€ Tim rakes a hand through his short hair, which is now sticking up a bit. โ€œIโ€™m telling you, it was nothing.ย Nothing. We met at the library, we got to talking, and we went out two times. Then she stopped returning my calls.โ€

โ€œBecause she was dead?โ€ Chelsea supplies.

Everyone else is firing questions at Tim, but I am completely speechless. I never could have imagined this in a million years. And how didย Shaneย know about it? He mustโ€™ve known, because when he said it, he was looking right at Tim. I glance at Shane now, and heโ€™s watching everything unfold, a look of amusement in his eyes.

โ€œDid the police question you?โ€ Kayla asks. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œDid they know you went out with her?โ€ she presses him.

โ€œI have no idea.โ€ He squirms on the sofa. โ€œWhether or not they did, it wasnโ€™t a big deal. I mean, two dates, and it was like a month before she died.โ€

โ€œYou mean,โ€ Chelsea says, โ€œbefore she wasย killed.โ€

Tim shoots me a pained look, but I have to look away. I thought I knew him better than anyone else in the world, but I didnโ€™t know about this. Iโ€™m reeling from the shock. I canโ€™t wrap my head around it.

โ€œYou should go to the police,โ€ Kayla says. โ€œTell them what you know.โ€ Tim grimaces. โ€œI donโ€™t know anything. I have nothing to tell them.โ€

With those words, he jumps off the sofa and stalks in the direction of the kitchen. He shoves the door open and disappears inside.

โ€œWow,โ€ Kayla breathes. โ€œIt just shows, you never knowโ€ฆโ€

I canโ€™t sit here another second while they speculate about what Tim might have done. I get up off the loveseat and follow Tim back to the kitchen. I can feel Shaneโ€™s eyes on my back, but I donโ€™t turn around.

Inside the dark kitchen, Tim is leaning against the counter, his head bowed over the rusty sink. He looks like heโ€™s trying to get control of himself. Iโ€™ve seen him like this before. He had the same expression on his face when his dog of twelve years, Rusty, developed tumors all over his body and they had to put him down.

โ€œHey,โ€ I say.

Tim turns to look at me just as a crack of lightning illuminates his face. โ€œHey.โ€

โ€œYou okay?โ€

The thunder that shakes the room is almost deafening. โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t tell you I went out with Tracy.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you?โ€

He rubs his hands over his face. โ€œI was freaked out. We went out at the beginning of the summer, and then a month later, they found her dead. I thought I might have been the last guy she went out with. And Iโ€ฆ I figured it wouldnโ€™t look good for me. Plus, it wasnโ€™t like I knew anything that would help.โ€

It makes sense, but at the same time, it leaves me feeling a little uneasy. If heโ€™s completely innocent, why wouldnโ€™t he want to tell the police what he knows? Why would he hide it?

โ€œI felt awful when I found out.โ€ He drops his eyes. โ€œIt didnโ€™t work out between me and Tracy, but she didnโ€™t deserve to die. She was a nice person. It tore me up.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I breathe. โ€œIโ€™m sureโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know how Shane knew about it.โ€ His face darkens. โ€œI canโ€™t believe heโ€™s been sitting on that, waiting for the perfect moment to make me look bad.โ€

I frown. โ€œI donโ€™t think that was his intention.โ€

โ€œOh, donโ€™t you?โ€ Tim sneers. โ€œBrooke, maybe I went on a couple of dates with some girl, but he really beat that kid up. Forย no reason. Put him in the freakingย hospital. Is that really someone you want to be with?โ€

I flinch at his words. โ€œHe said he regretted it.โ€

โ€œBullshit!โ€ Timโ€™s voice is loud enough that Iโ€™m worried the others will hear it through the door. โ€œShane Nelson is a bully, and heโ€™s a piece of shit. He only regrets that you found out about it because he wants to sleep with you.โ€

My face burns. Tim hates Shane, but I canโ€™t believe he would say that to me. โ€œThat is so not true. And you have no right to say that.โ€

We stare at each other for a moment. A muscle twitches under my eye.

Tim breaks first.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ He lets out a breath. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Brooke. Youโ€™re right. I shouldnโ€™t have said that.โ€

โ€œDamn straight.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just worried about you.โ€ The fear in his eyes is real. I know him well enough to know it. โ€œIโ€™m worried about you being with Shane. I donโ€™t think itโ€™s safe.โ€

โ€œNot safe?โ€ I thought he was only worried that Shane was going to break my heart. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œListen to me, Brooke.โ€ He lowers his voice a notch. โ€œShane isโ€ฆโ€

Before Tim can get out what he wants to say, the door to the kitchen swings open. Shane is standing there, looking even more crazy sexy than he usually does, with his dark hair slightly mussed, and a lopsided smile on his face. โ€œHey, Brooke,โ€ he says. โ€œYou coming back out?โ€

Itโ€™s hard not to notice he doesnโ€™t bother to ask Tim if heโ€™s coming out. โ€œYes,โ€ I say. I look over at Tim. โ€œYou coming?โ€

Tim screws up his face. He looked like he had something important to tell me before Shane burst into the kitchen, but he canโ€™t very well do it now. And the truth is, I donโ€™t want to hear it. Tim and Shane have some stupid little rivalry, but itโ€™s not my problem. Tim needs to get the hell over it.

โ€œFine,โ€ Tim finally says. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€
