Chapter no 29

The Coworker

WE ARE TRENDING.ย In 280 characters or less, everybody on the internet is sharing stories about workplace bullying and how awful it is that poor Dawn was tormented the way she was. Even though itโ€™s almost physically painful, I scan through the litany of horrible comments about my company and the people who work there. Itโ€™s almost too awful to read. People as a whole can be terrible. Mob mentality and all.

The people who work at that company should all go to jail. #VixedBullies

Child bullies grow up to be adult bullies. #justicefordawn #VixedBullies

I took Collahealth and it was the most useless supplement I have ever tried. Basically sugar pills. Did nothing. #VixedSucks

Youโ€™re lucky it did nothing. It made my hair fall out. #VixedSucks

Oh my God, Collahealth doesย notย make your hair fall out. That is a complete lie. Yes, it doesnโ€™t work for everyone. But for the people that do have benefits, the effects can be amazing. I mean, I donโ€™t take Collahealth

personally. My collagen is already fine. But Iโ€™ve read the literature on it, and itโ€™s a really good product.

After a while, Iโ€™m just searching for my name. For the most part, whoever leaked the story about Dawn has kept my name out of it. Thank God. But a few people have chosen to criticize me as an employee of Vixed.

Natalie from Vixed is the worst lying snake you will ever meet. She will say anything to get you to buy their crap. #VixedSucks

Itโ€™s hard not to take it personally. โ€œNat?โ€

Seth is standing over me, hovering at the entrance to my cubicle, wearing his trench coat. I was so absorbed in looking at my Twitter feed that I didnโ€™t even see him approach. His eyebrows are scrunched together.

โ€œHi,โ€ I mumble. โ€œYou okay, Nat?โ€

I drag my gaze away from my phone. โ€œWeโ€™re getting trashed on the internet, you know.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ He seems unperturbed, given that his name got mentioned quite a bit as well.ย Manager Seth Hoffman did nothing to stop the bullying. โ€œYou should stop looking at it.โ€

โ€œHow can I?โ€ Even as Iโ€™m talking to him, Iโ€™m looking back down again to read the next comment. Thereโ€™s a new one popping up every few seconds.

โ€œItโ€™s easy.โ€ He reaches out and snatches my phone off the desk. โ€œJust stop. Itโ€™s not going to help find who did this to Dawn.โ€

โ€œHey!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s for your own good, Nat.โ€

โ€œEveryone thinks I bullied Dawn. That Iโ€™m a terrible person.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s bullshit.โ€ Seth says the words so vehemently, I almost want to hug him. Even Kim seemed to believe that I had been bullying Dawn, and sheโ€™s my best friend. โ€œYou wereย niceย to Dawn. You didnโ€™t do anything wrong. These people on the internet are just speculating. Theyโ€™re just looking for somebody to blame. They donโ€™t know you like I do.โ€

I tug at a lock of my hair. โ€œArenโ€™t you freaking out though? Corporate is not going to be happy about this.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine. They know itโ€™s just a rumor and it will blow over. What happened to Dawn is terrible, but it wasnโ€™t our fault.โ€

โ€œWhat if they fire you?โ€

He grins crookedly. โ€œThen my income drops precipitously, which will be great for my divorce proceedings. Relax, Nat. This is going to be okay.โ€

โ€œGive me back my phone.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to walk you to your car, then Iโ€™ll give it back to you.โ€

Seth seems intent on holding my phone hostage, so I snatch my jacket off the back of my chair and wrap it around myself. Thereโ€™s a chance he could be right. Iโ€™m pretty sure nothing good can come from reading these posts. It is what it is.

At least nobody has called me a murderer. So thereโ€™s that.

I follow Seth down the hall to the elevators. Heโ€™s still got my phone shoved into his own coat pocket. I still donโ€™t understand all the hate directed at us. We didnโ€™t bully Dawn, although God knows, we could have, because she blatantly disregarded so many social conventions. But we were nice to herโ€”I mean,ย mostly. Were there a few times I got irritated and snapped at her? Sure, Iโ€™m only human. But I really did try to be patient with her, in general. I even made an effort to include her in work events. Like even though she wasnโ€™t friends with Kim and was sometimes outright rude to her, I made a point of inviting her to the bridal shower we threw for herโ€” even though she didnโ€™t end up coming.

And even if we did bully her, what does that have to do with her murder, for Godโ€™s sake? Do they think we bullied her to death?

โ€œYouโ€™re still thinking about it,โ€ he notes.

โ€œI canโ€™t help it!โ€ I tug at my pantyhose, which rip slightly under my fingernail. Damn it. โ€œIโ€™m not used to people hating me.โ€ Well, except for his wife. But even she seems to have lost interest in harassing me.

โ€œNobody hates you, Nat.โ€ His light brown eyes meet mine across the elevator. โ€œI sure donโ€™t.โ€

I look away from him. This is not going to lead to anything good.

The sun has already gone down when we get out of the building. The weather is brisk and itโ€™s almost drizzling. November just started, and itโ€™s promising to be a wet, cold month. Soon it will start snowing. Saturday is supposed to be nice at least.

Seth stands close to me as we walk through the parking lot in the direction of my car. I notice heโ€™s parked only a few spots away from mine.

A few times as we walk, his shoulder brushes against mine. I donโ€™t comment on that.

When we reach my car, I turn to look at him. โ€œCan I have my phone back now?โ€

He fishes into his pocket and pulls it out for me. As I take it from him, my fingers brush against his. I canโ€™t help but notice how close he is standing to me.

โ€œSo,โ€ he says.

My hair is starting to curl in the cold mist. โ€œSo.โ€

He leans to kiss me. He gets within about an inch of my lips, but then I come to my senses. I press my palm firmly against his chest, pushing him away.

โ€œNo, Seth,โ€ I say. โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œCome on,โ€ he pleads with me. โ€œJust a one-off.โ€

โ€œLast night was the one-off,โ€ I remind him. โ€œIf we do it again, itโ€™s not a one-off. Then itโ€™s just cheating. And I donโ€™t want to cheat on Caleb. Heโ€™s a good guy.โ€

โ€œSo break up with him. Be with me instead.โ€

I can see in his eyes that heโ€™s serious. He wants me to dump Caleb and go out with him instead. He must be out of his mind. Yes, last night was amazing and he is wicked s*xy. But heโ€™s a mess. His personal life is a disaster. And my own head is still spinning after everything thatโ€™s happened this week. I just canโ€™t do this.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I say.

Before he can start declaring his love for me again like last night, I grab my keys out of my purse and get into my car. Seth backs away to let me get out of the spot, but he doesnโ€™t get into his own car. Even as Iโ€™m driving out of the parking lot, heโ€™s watching me.
