Chapter no 40

The Coworker

AS Iโ€™M COMINGย out of Sethโ€™s office, Kim runs over to me. Her eyes are wide and curious. She grabs my arm to slow me down on my trajectory back to my cubicle.

โ€œWhat happened in there?โ€ she asks me. โ€œSeth came around asking for you earlier, and he lookedย reallyย upset.โ€

I want to spit at her that itโ€™s none of her damn business. Kim used to be my best friend in this office, but our power dynamic has changed over the years. When she started here, we were both single. We used to go out to bars together and meet guys. We had fun together.

Then Kim met the guy she ended up marrying. He wasnโ€™t exactly handsome, but he was wealthy and offered her the life she always wanted. The second she got engaged, everything was all about her upcoming weddingโ€”the honeymoon, the giant house he wasย buildingย for her, and all the perfect children they were going to have. I started to feel like Kimโ€™s loser friend.

It didnโ€™t help that she knew about me and Seth, and was super judgmental. Yes, I know itโ€™s not a wise personal or career move to sleep with your boss. It wasnโ€™t like I planned it out. You canโ€™t control who you fall in love with.

Still, Kim is my friend. Itโ€™s not her fault that sheโ€™s gotten her life together faster than I have. And she was rightโ€”itย wasย really stupid to sleep with Seth. Itโ€™s blown up in my face more than once.

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ I mumble. โ€œIโ€™m just going to work from home for a bit.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€

I forgot how nosy Kim can be. Sheโ€™s also a gossip. Iโ€™m sure as hell not going to tell her I got suspended for allegedly stealing from the company. โ€œItโ€™s been a stressful few days. Heโ€™s giving me some flex time.โ€

Yes, unpaid flex time while heโ€™s investigating me for embezzlement. She frowns. โ€œIs the race still on?โ€

โ€œOf course it is,โ€ I snap at her. โ€œIโ€™ve spent the last three months organizing it. Do you think Iโ€™m going to just cancel it on one dayโ€™s notice?โ€

โ€œYes, butโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re coming tomorrow, arenโ€™t you?โ€ It occurs to me suddenly that with everything going on, people might not show up for the 5K. In terms of the charity, it doesnโ€™t matter. I already have the donations. But Iโ€™ve got a local news crew coming, and it will look horrible if Iโ€™m the only one who shows up. โ€œYouโ€™re going to be there, right?โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€ Kim chews on her thumbnail. โ€œIโ€™m just not sure if itโ€™s a good idea right now. With everything going onโ€ฆโ€

I close my fingers around her arm. โ€œKim, youโ€™ve got to come. I need people to show up to this. You canโ€™t leave me hanging.โ€

โ€œNatโ€ฆโ€ She squirms. โ€œYouโ€™re hurting my arm.โ€

I release my grip, my cheeks burning. โ€œPlease. You need to come.โ€

I donโ€™t mention those pictures from her bachelorette party. She knows Iโ€™ve got them.

She finally nods. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll be there. You can count on me.โ€

My shoulders relax slightly. Kim will be there, and also Caleb will show up. So thatโ€™s at least three of us. And Iโ€™m sure at least a handful of other people from the office will come. Greg Lowsky will surely make an appearance, even if he canโ€™t finish the race.

โ€œAnd maybe theyโ€™ll find Dawnโ€™s killer by then?โ€ Kim says.

I donโ€™t know a lot of things for sure, but I know theyโ€™re not going to find Dawnโ€™s killer by tomorrow morning.
