โI am going to kill you.โ
โHe wasnโt like that when I went to visit,โ Kenji says to me. โI swear.
He was fine. He wasย sad.โ
โYeah, well, obviously seeing my face isnโt bringing back happy memories for him.โ
Kenji sighs. Looks away. โIโm really sorry,โ he says. โI swear. But he wasnโt lying, J. They were down to practically nothing the last time I went back there. Kent said half their supplies went bad because he didnโt realize the blast had broken some of the shelves in their storage room. Some of the jars had cracked open and there were rodents and shit eating their food. And they were all alone out there. Itโs cold as all hell and you have no idea how depressing it was, seeing them like that, and Jamesโโ
โI get it, Kenji.โ I blow out a breath. Fold myself onto the floor. โI really do.โ
I look up, look around. Everyone is busying themselves with some kind of task. Running or sketching or training or lifting weights. I think weโre all exhausted by this drama. No one wants to deal with it anymore.
Kenji sits down across from me.
โHe canโt keep treating me like that,โ I finally say. โAnd I wonโt keep having the same conversation with him.โ I look up. โYou brought him here. Heโs your responsibility. We have three weeks before we initiate this plan, and weโre already cutting it really close. I need to be able to come down here and train every day, and I donโt want to have to worry about him freaking out on me.โ
โI know,โ he says. โI know.โ โGood.โ
โHey, soโwere you serious?โ Kenji asks. โWhen you said Warner doesnโt care about him being here?โ
โYeah. Why?โ
Kenji raises his eyebrows. โThatโs โฆ weird.โ
โOne day,โ I say to him, โyouโll realize that Warner is not as crazy as you think he is.โ
โYeah,โ Kenji says. โOr maybe one day weโll be able to reprogram that chip in your head.โ
โShut up.โ I laugh, shoving him a little. โAll right. Up. Letโs go. Itโs time to work.โ
