Chapter no 43

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Alia has designed me a new suit.

Weโ€™re sitting on the mats like we always do in the evenings, and right now, Alia is showing us her designs.

Iโ€™ve never seen her this animated before.

Sheโ€™s more confident talking about the contents of her sketchbook than she is the weather. Sheโ€™s talking fast and fluid, describing the details and the dimensions, even outlining the materials weโ€™ll need in order to make it.

Itโ€™s built with carbon.

Carbon fibers, to be precise. She explained that carbon fibers are so stiff and abrasive that theyโ€™ll need to be bonded with something very flexible in order to become wearable, so sheโ€™s planning on experimenting with several different materials. Something about polymers. And synthetic something. And a bunch of other words I didnโ€™t really understand. Her sketches show how the carbon fibers are literally woven into a textile, creating a durable and lightweight material that will serve as a stronger basis for what I need.

Her idea was inspired by the knuckle braces she made for me.

She said she originally wanted the suit to be made of thousands of pieces of gunmetal, but then she realized sheโ€™d never have the tools to make the pieces as thin as sheโ€™d like them, and therefore, the suit would be too heavy. But this is sounding just as amazing.

โ€œItโ€™ll complement and enhance your strength,โ€ sheโ€™s saying to me. โ€œThe carbon fibers will give you an added level of protection; they wonโ€™t damage easily, so youโ€™ll be able to move more freely through different terrains. And when youโ€™re in a dangerous environment, you must remember to maintain a state ofย electricumย at all times; that way your body will become virtually indestructible,โ€ she says.

โ€œWhat do you mean โ€ฆ ?โ€ I look from her to Castle for clarification. โ€œHow can that be possible?โ€

โ€œBecause,โ€ Alia explains. โ€œIn the same way that you can break through concrete without hurting yourself, you should also be able to sustain an attackโ€”from a bullet, for exampleโ€”without harm.โ€ She smiles. โ€œYour powers make you functionally invincible.โ€

Wow.

โ€œThis suit is a precaution more than anything else,โ€ she goes on. โ€œWeโ€™ve seen in the past that youย can, in fact, damage your skin if youโ€™re not wholly in control of your power. When you broke the ground in the research rooms,โ€ she says, โ€œwe thought it was the enormity of the act that injured you. But after examining the situation and your abilities more thoroughly, Castle and I found this deduction to be inaccurate.โ€

โ€œOur energies are never inconsistent,โ€ Castle jumps in, nodding at Alia. โ€œThey follow a patternโ€”an almost mathematical precision. If you cannot injure yourself while breaking through a concrete wall, it does not then follow that you should be able to injure yourself by breaking the ground, only to remainย uninjured after breaking the ground a second time.โ€ He looks at me. โ€œYour injuries have to do with your hold on your ability. If you ever slip out ofย electricumโ€”if you dial it back for even a momentโ€”you will be vulnerable. Remember to beย on, at all times. If you do, you cannot be defeated.โ€

โ€œI hate you so hard right now,โ€ Kenji mutters under his breath. โ€œFunctionally invincible my ass.โ€

โ€œJealous?โ€ I grin at him. โ€œI canโ€™t even look at you.โ€

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t be surprised.โ€ Warner has just walked in. I spin around to find heโ€™s heading toward our group, smiling a brittle smile at no one in particular. He sits down across from me. Meets my eyes as he says, โ€œI always knew your powers, once harnessed, would be unmatched.โ€

I try to breathe.

Warner finally breaks eye contact with me to glance around the room. โ€œGood evening, everyone,โ€ he says. He nods at Castle. A special sort of acknowledgment.

Adam has a special sort of acknowledgment of his own.

Heโ€™s staring at Warner with an intense, unmasked hatred, looking as though he truly wants to murder Warner, and Iโ€™m suddenly more anxious than Iโ€™ve been all day. Iโ€™m looking from Adam to Warner and back again

and I donโ€™t know what to do. I donโ€™t know if something is about to happen and Iโ€™m so desperate for things to be civil that Iโ€”

โ€œHi,โ€ James says, so loudly it startles all of us. Heโ€™s looking at Warner. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

Warner raises an eyebrow. โ€œI live here.โ€ โ€œThis is yourย house?โ€ James asks.

Strange. I wonder what Adam and Kenji told him about where they were going.

Warner nods. โ€œIn some capacity, yes,โ€ he says. โ€œIt serves as my home. I live upstairs.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s so cool,โ€ James says, grinning. โ€œThis whole place is so cool.โ€ He frowns. โ€œHey I thought we were supposed to hate you, though.โ€

โ€œJames,โ€ Adam says, shooting his brother a warning glance. โ€œWhat?โ€ James asks.

โ€œYou are free to hate me,โ€ Warner says. โ€œIf you want to. I donโ€™t mind.โ€ โ€œWell youย shouldย mind,โ€ James says, surprised. โ€œIโ€™d be really upset if

someone hated me.โ€ โ€œYou are young.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m almost twelve,โ€ James says to him. โ€œI was told you were ten.โ€

โ€œI saidย almostย twelve.โ€ James rolls his eyes. โ€œHow old are you?โ€ Everyone is watching. Listening. Too fascinated to look away.

Warner studies James. Takes his time answering. โ€œIโ€™m nineteen years old.โ€

Jamesโ€™s eyes go wide. โ€œYouโ€™re only a year older than Adam,โ€ he says. โ€œHow do you have so many nice things if youโ€™re only a year older than Adam? I donโ€™t know anyone your age who has nice things.โ€

Warner looks over at me. Looks back at James. Looks at me again. โ€œIs there nothing you want to add to this conversation, love?โ€

I shake my head. Smiling.

โ€œWhy do you call her โ€˜loveโ€™?โ€ James asks. โ€œIโ€™ve heard you say that before, too. A lot. Are you in love with her? I think Adamโ€™s in love with her. Kenjiโ€™s not in love with her, though. I already asked him.โ€

Warner blinks at him. โ€œWell?โ€ James asks. โ€œWell what?โ€

โ€œAre you in love with her?โ€

โ€œAreย youย in love with her?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ James blushes. โ€œNo. Sheโ€™s like a million years older than me.โ€ โ€œWould anyone like to take over this conversation?โ€ Warner asks,

looking around the group.

โ€œYou never answered my question,โ€ James says. โ€œAbout why you have so many things. Iโ€™m not trying to be rude,โ€ he says. โ€œReally. Iโ€™m just wondering. Iโ€™ve never taken a shower with hot water before. And you have so much food. It must be really nice to have so much food all the time.โ€

Warner flinches, unexpectedly. He looks more carefully at James. โ€œNo,โ€ he says slowly. โ€œIt is not a terrible thing to have food and hot water all the time.โ€

โ€œSo then are you going to answer my question? About where you got all this stuff?โ€

Warner sighs.

โ€œI am the commander and regent of Sector 45,โ€ he says. โ€œWe are currently on an army base, where it is my job to oversee our soldiers and all the civilians who live on the accompanying compounds. I am paid to live here.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ James goes pale in an instant; he suddenly looks inhumanly terrified. โ€œYou work for The Reestablishment?โ€

โ€œHey, itโ€™s okay, buddy,โ€ Kenji says to James. โ€œYouโ€™re safe here. Okay?

No oneโ€™s going to hurt you.โ€

โ€œThis is the kind of guy youโ€™re into, huh?โ€ Adam snaps at me. โ€œThe kind of guy who petrifies children?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nice to see you again, Kent.โ€ Warner is watching Adam now. โ€œHow are you enjoying your stay?โ€

Adam seems to be fighting back the urge to say a lot of unkind things. โ€œSo you really work for them?โ€ James is asking Warner again, his

words just a breath, his eyes still frozen on Warnerโ€™s face. Heโ€™s shaking so hard it breaks my heart. โ€œYou work for The Reestablishment?โ€

Warner hesitates. Looks away and looks back again. โ€œTheoretically,โ€ he says. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ James asks. Warner is looking into his hands.

โ€œWhat do you mean,ย theoretically?โ€ James demands.

โ€œAre you asking,โ€ Warner says with a sigh, โ€œbecause you are actually seeking clarification? Or is it because you donโ€™t know what the word

theoreticallyย means?โ€

James hesitates, his panic dissolving into frustration for a moment. He screws up his face, annoyed. โ€œFine. What doesย theoreticallyย mean?โ€

โ€œTheoretically,โ€ Warner says, โ€œIโ€™m supposed to work for The Reestablishment. But, obviously, as Iโ€™m hosting a group of rebels on this government-owned military baseโ€”in my private quarters, no lessโ€”and sustaining said rebels so that they might overthrow our current regime, I would say no. I am not, exactly, working for The Reestablishment. I have committed treason,โ€ he says to James. โ€œA crime that is punishable by death.โ€

James stares at him for a long time. โ€œThatโ€™sย whatย theoreticallyย means?โ€ Warner looks up at the wall. Sighs again.

I bite back a laugh.

โ€œSo, waitโ€”then youโ€™re not the bad guy,โ€ James says all of a sudden. โ€œYouโ€™re on our side, right?โ€

Warner turns slowly to meet Jamesโ€™s eyes. Says nothing. โ€œWell?โ€ James asks, impatient. โ€œArenโ€™t you on our side?โ€

Warner blinks. Twice. โ€œSo it seems,โ€ he says, looking as though he can hardly believe heโ€™s saying it.

โ€œPerhaps we should get back to the suit,โ€ Castle cuts in. Heโ€™s looking at Warner, smiling triumphantly. โ€œAlia has spent a long time designing it, and I know she has more details to share.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Kenji says, excited. โ€œThis looks badass, Alia. I want one. Can I have one?โ€

I wonder if Iโ€™m the only person who notices that Warnerโ€™s hands are shaking.
