โYou didnโt tell me what you thought of my plan.โ
Warner and I have just stepped back into his room and he still hasnโt said a word to me. Heโs standing by the door to his office, his eyes on the floor. โI didnโt realize you wanted my opinion.โ
โOf course I want your opinion.โ
โI should really get back to work,โ he says, and turns to go. I touch his arm.
Warner goes rigid. He stands, unmoving, his eyes trained on the hand Iโve placed on his forearm.
โPlease,โ I whisper. โI donโt want it to be like this with us. I want us to be able to talk. To get to know each other again,ย properlyโto be friendsโโ Warner makes a strange sound deep in his throat. Puts a few feet between us. โI am doing my best, love. But I donโt know how to be just
your friend.โ
โIt doesnโt have to be all or nothing,โ I try to tell him. โThere can be steps in betweenโI just need time to understand you like thisโas a different personโโ
โBut thatโs just it.โ His voice is worn thin. โYou need time to understand me as aย different person. You need time to fix your perception of me.โ
โWhy is that so wrongโโ
โBecause I am not a different person,โ he says firmly. โI am the same man Iโve always been and I have never tried to be different. You have misunderstood me, Juliette. Youโve judged me, youโve perceived me to be something I am not, but that is no fault of mine. I have not changed, and I will not changeโโ
โYou already have.โ
His jaw clenches. โYou have quite a lot of gall to speak with such conviction on matters you know nothing about.โ
I swallow, hard.
Warner steps so close to me Iโm actually afraid to move. โYou once accused me of not knowing the meaning of love,โ he says. โBut you were wrong. You fault me, perhaps, for loving you too much.โ His eyes are so intense. So green. So cold. โBut at least I do not deny my own heart.โ
โAnd you think I do,โ I whisper. Warner drops his eyes. Says nothing.
โWhat you donโt understand,โ I tell him, my voice catching, โis that I donโt even know my own heart anymore. I donโt know how to name what I feel yet and I need time to figure it out. You want more right now but right now what I need is for you to be my friendโโ
Warner flinches.
โI do not have friends,โ he says. โWhy canโt you try?โ
He shakes his head.
โWhy? Why not give it a chanceโโ
โBecause I am afraid,โ he finally says, voice shaking, โthat your friendship would be the end of me.โ
Iโm still frozen in place as his office door slams shut behind him.
