Chapter no 37

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

โ€œYou didnโ€™t tell me what you thought of my plan.โ€

Warner and I have just stepped back into his room and he still hasnโ€™t said a word to me. Heโ€™s standing by the door to his office, his eyes on the floor. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize you wanted my opinion.โ€

โ€œOf course I want your opinion.โ€

โ€œI should really get back to work,โ€ he says, and turns to go. I touch his arm.

Warner goes rigid. He stands, unmoving, his eyes trained on the hand Iโ€™ve placed on his forearm.

โ€œPlease,โ€ I whisper. โ€œI donโ€™t want it to be like this with us. I want us to be able to talk. To get to know each other again,ย properlyโ€”to be friendsโ€”โ€ Warner makes a strange sound deep in his throat. Puts a few feet between us. โ€œI am doing my best, love. But I donโ€™t know how to be just

your friend.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t have to be all or nothing,โ€ I try to tell him. โ€œThere can be steps in betweenโ€”I just need time to understand you like thisโ€”as a different personโ€”โ€

โ€œBut thatโ€™s just it.โ€ His voice is worn thin. โ€œYou need time to understand me as aย different person. You need time to fix your perception of me.โ€

โ€œWhy is that so wrongโ€”โ€

โ€œBecause I am not a different person,โ€ he says firmly. โ€œI am the same man Iโ€™ve always been and I have never tried to be different. You have misunderstood me, Juliette. Youโ€™ve judged me, youโ€™ve perceived me to be something I am not, but that is no fault of mine. I have not changed, and I will not changeโ€”โ€

โ€œYou already have.โ€

His jaw clenches. โ€œYou have quite a lot of gall to speak with such conviction on matters you know nothing about.โ€

I swallow, hard.

Warner steps so close to me Iโ€™m actually afraid to move. โ€œYou once accused me of not knowing the meaning of love,โ€ he says. โ€œBut you were wrong. You fault me, perhaps, for loving you too much.โ€ His eyes are so intense. So green. So cold. โ€œBut at least I do not deny my own heart.โ€

โ€œAnd you think I do,โ€ I whisper. Warner drops his eyes. Says nothing.

โ€œWhat you donโ€™t understand,โ€ I tell him, my voice catching, โ€œis that I donโ€™t even know my own heart anymore. I donโ€™t know how to name what I feel yet and I need time to figure it out. You want more right now but right now what I need is for you to be my friendโ€”โ€

Warner flinches.

โ€œI do not have friends,โ€ he says. โ€œWhy canโ€™t you try?โ€

He shakes his head.

โ€œWhy? Why not give it a chanceโ€”โ€

โ€œBecause I am afraid,โ€ he finally says, voice shaking, โ€œthat your friendship would be the end of me.โ€

Iโ€™m still frozen in place as his office door slams shut behind him.
