Weโre all sitting on benches around the training room. Warner is sitting next to me and Iโm doing everything I can to make sure our shoulders donโt accidentally touch.
โAll right, so, first things first, right?โ Winston says, looking around. โWe have to get Sonya and Sara back. The question is how.โ A pause. โWe have no idea how to get to the supreme.โ
Everyone looks at Warner. Warner looks at his watch. โWell?โ Kenji says.
โWell, what?โ Warner says, bored.
โWell, arenโt you going to help us?โ Ian snaps. โThis is your territory.โ
Warner looks at me for the first time all evening. โYouโre absolutely sure you trust these people?โ he asks me. โAll of them?โ
โYes,โ I say quietly. โI really do.โ
โVery well.โ Warner takes a deep breath before addressing the group. โMy father,โ he says calmly, โis on a ship. In the middle of the ocean.โ
โHeโs on a ship?โ Kenji asks, startled. โThe capital is aย ship?โ
โNot exactly.โ Warner hesitates. โBut the point is, we have to lure himย here. Going to him will not work. We have to create a problem big enough for him to be forced to come to us.โ He looks at me then. โJuliette says she already has a plan.โ
I nod. Take a deep breath. Study the faces before me. โI think we should take over Sector 45.โ
Stunned silence.
โI think, together,โ I tell them, โweโll be able to convince the soldiers to fight on our side. At the end of the day, no one is benefiting from The Reestablishment except for the people in charge. The soldiers are tired and hungry and probably only took this job because there were no other options.โ I pause. โWe can rally the civiliansย andย the soldiers. Everyone in
the sector. Get them to join us. And they know me,โ I say. โThe soldiers. Theyโve already seen meโthey know what I can do. But all of us together?โ I shake my head. โThat would be amazing. We could show them that weโre different. Stronger. We can give them hopeโa reason to fight back.
โAnd then,โ I say, โonce we have their support, news will spread, and Anderson will be forced to come back here. Heโll have to try and take us downโheโll have no other choice. And once heโs back, we take him out. We fight him and his army and we win. And then we take over the country.โ
โMy goodness.โ
Castle is the first to speak.
โMs. Ferrars,โ he says, โyouโve given this a great deal of thought.โ I nod.
Kenji is looking at me like heโs not sure if he should laugh or applaud. โWhat do you think?โ I ask, looking around.
โWhat if it doesnโt work?โ Lily says. โWhat if the soldiers are too scared to change their allegiance? What if they kill you instead?โ
โThatโs a definite possibility,โ I say. โBut I think if weโre strong enough
โif the nine of us stand united, with all of our strengths combinedโI think theyโll believe we can do something pretty amazing.โ
โYeah but how will they know what our strengths are?โ Brendan asks. โWhat if they donโt believe us?โ
โWe can show them.โ
โAnd if they shoot us?โ Ian counters.
โI can do it alone, if youโre worried about that. I donโt mind. Kenji was teaching me how to project my energy before the war, and I think if I can learn to master that, I could do some pretty scary things. Things that might impress them enough to join us.โ
โYou canย project?โ Winston asks, eyes wide. โYou mean you can, like, mass-kill everyone with your life-sucking thing?โ
โUm, no,โ I say. โI mean, well, yes, I suppose I could do that, too, but Iโm not talking about that. I mean I can project my strength. Not the โฆ life- sucking thingโโ
โWait, what strength?โ Brendan asks, confused. โI thought itโs your skin thatโs lethal?โ
Iโm about to respond when I remember that Brendan and Winston and Ian were all taken hostage before Iโd begun to seriously train. I donโt know
that they knew much about my progress at all.
So I start from the top.
โMy โฆ power,โ I say, โhas to do with more than just my skin.โ I glance at Kenji. Gesture to him. โWeโd been working together for a while, trying to figure out what it was, exactly, I was capable of, and Kenji realized that my true energy is coming from deep within me, not the surface. Itโs in my bones, my blood,ย andย my skin,โ I try to explain. โMy real power is an insane kind of superstrength.
โMy skin is just one element of that,โ I tell them. โItโs like the most heightened form of my energy, and the craziest form of protection; itโs like my body has put up a shield. Metaphorical barbed wire. It keeps intruders away.โ I almost laugh, wondering when it became so easy for me to talk about this stuff. To be comfortable with it. โBut Iโm also strong enough to break through just about anything,โ I tell them, โand without even injuring myself. Concrete. Brick. Glassโโ
โThe earth,โ Kenji adds.
โYes,โ I say, smiling at him. โEven the earth.โ
โShe created an earthquake,โ Alia says eagerly, and Iโm actually surprised to hear her voice. โDuring the first battle,โ she tells Brendan and Winston and Ian. โWhen we were trying to save you guys. She punched the ground and it split open. Thatโs how we were able to get away.โ
The guys are gawking at me.
โSo, what Iโm trying to say,โ I tell them, โis that if I can project my strength, and really learn to control it? I donโt know.โ I shrug. โI could move mountains, probably.โ
โThatโs a bit ambitious.โ Kenji grins, ever the proud parent. โAmbitious, but probably not impossible.โ I grin back.
โWow,โ Lily says. โSo you can just โฆ destroy stuff? Like, anything?โ I nod. Glance at Warner. โDo you mind?โ
โNot at all,โ he says. His eyes are carefully inscrutable.
I get to my feet and walk over to the stacks of dumbbells, all the while prepping myself mentally to tap into my energy. This is still the trickiest part for me: learning how to moderate my strength with finesse.
I pick up a fifty-pound free weight and carry it over to the group.
For a moment I wonder if this should feel heavy to me, especially considering how it weighs about half of what I do, but I canโt really feel it.
I sit back down on the bench. Rest the weight on the ground.
โWhat are you going to do with that?โ Ian asks, eyes wide. โWhat do you want me to do?โ I ask him.
โYouโre telling me you can just, like, rip that apart or whatever?โ Winston says.
I nod.
โDo it,โ Kenji says. Heโs practically bouncing in his seat. โDo it do it.โ So I do.
I pick it up, and literally crush the weight between my hands. It becomes a mangled mess of metal. A fifty-pound lump. I rip it in half and drop the two pieces on the floor.
The benches shake.
โSorry,โ I say quickly, looking around. โI didnโt mean to toss it like that
โโ
โGoddamn,โ Ian says. โThat is so cool.โ โDo it again,โ Winston says, eyes bright.
โIโd really rather she didnโt destroy all of my property,โ Warner cuts in. โHey, soโwaitโ,โ Winston says, realizing something as he stares at
Warner. โYou can do that, too, canโt you? You can just take her power and use it like that, too?โ
โI can take all of your powers,โ Warner corrects him. โAnd do whatever I want with them.โ
The terror in the room is a very palpable thing. I frown at Warner. โPlease donโt scare them.โ He says nothing. Looks at nothing.
โSo the two of youโโIan tries to find his voiceโโI mean, togetherโ you two could basicallyโโ
โTake over the world?โ Warner is looking at the wall now.
โI was going to say you could kick some serious ass, but yeah, that, too, I guess.โ Ian shakes his head.
โAre you sure you trust this guy?โ Lily asks me, jerking a thumb at Warner and looking at me like sheโs seriously, genuinely concerned. โWhat if heโs just using you for your power?โ
โI trust him with my life,โ I say quietly. โI already have, and Iโd do it again.โ
Warner looks at me and looks away, and for a brief second I catch the charge of emotion in his eyes.
โSo, let me get this straight,โ Winston says. โOur plan is to basically seduce the soldiers and civilians of Sector 45 into fighting with us?โ
Kenji crosses his arms. โYeah, it sounds like weโre going to go all peacock and hope they find us attractive enough to mate with.โ
โGross.โ Brendan frowns.
โDespite how weird Kenji just made this sound,โ I say, shooting a stern look in his direction, โthe answer is yes, basically. We can provide them with a group to rally around. We take charge of the army, and then take charge of the people. And then we lead them into battle. We really, truly fight back.โ
โAnd if you win?โ Castle asks. Heโs been so quiet all this time. โWhat do you plan to do then?โ
โWhat do you mean?โ I ask.
โLetโs say you are successful,โ he says. โYou defeat the supreme. You kill him and his men. Then what? Who will take over as the supreme commander?โ
โI will.โ
The room gasps. I feel Warner go stiff beside me. โDamn, princess,โ Kenji says quietly.
โAnd then?โ Castle asks, ignoring everyone but me. โAfter that?โ His eyes are worried. Scared, almost. โYouโre going to kill whoever else stands in your way? All the other sector leaders, all across the nation? Thatโs 554 more warsโโ
โSome will surrender,โ I tell him.
โAnd the others?โ he asks. โHow can you lead a nation in the right direction when youโve just slaughtered all who oppose you? How will you be any different from those youโve defeated?โ
โI trust myself,โ I tell him, โto be strong enough to do whatโs right. Our world is dying right now. You said yourself that we have the means to reclaim our landโto change things back to the way they were. Once power is in the right placeโwithย usโyou can rebuild what you started at Omega Point. Youโll have the freedom to implement those changes to our land, water, animals, and atmosphere, and save millions of lives in the processโ giving the new generations hope for a different future. We have to try,โ I tell him. โWe canโt just sit back and watch people die when we have the power to make a difference.โ
The room goes silent. Still.
โHell,โ Winston says. โIโd follow you into battle.โ โMe too,โ Alia says.
โAnd me.โ Brendan.
โYou know Iโm in,โ Kenji says.
โMe too,โ Lily and Ian say at the same time.
Castle takes a deep breath. โMaybe,โ he says. He leans back in his chair, clasps his hands. โMaybe youโll be able to do right what I did wrong.โ He shakes his head. โI am twenty-seven years your senior and Iโve never had your confidence, but I do understand your heart. And I trust that you say what you believe to be true.โ A pause. A careful look. โWe will support you. But know now that you are taking on a great and terrifying responsibility. One that may backfire in an irreversible way.โ
โI do understand that,โ I say quietly.
โVery well then, Ms. Ferrars. Good luck, and godspeed. Our world is in your hands.โ
