Chapter no 36

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Weโ€™re all sitting on benches around the training room. Warner is sitting next to me and Iโ€™m doing everything I can to make sure our shoulders donโ€™t accidentally touch.

โ€œAll right, so, first things first, right?โ€ Winston says, looking around. โ€œWe have to get Sonya and Sara back. The question is how.โ€ A pause. โ€œWe have no idea how to get to the supreme.โ€

Everyone looks at Warner. Warner looks at his watch. โ€œWell?โ€ Kenji says.

โ€œWell, what?โ€ Warner says, bored.

โ€œWell, arenโ€™t you going to help us?โ€ Ian snaps. โ€œThis is your territory.โ€

Warner looks at me for the first time all evening. โ€œYouโ€™re absolutely sure you trust these people?โ€ he asks me. โ€œAll of them?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I say quietly. โ€œI really do.โ€

โ€œVery well.โ€ Warner takes a deep breath before addressing the group. โ€œMy father,โ€ he says calmly, โ€œis on a ship. In the middle of the ocean.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s on a ship?โ€ Kenji asks, startled. โ€œThe capital is aย ship?โ€

โ€œNot exactly.โ€ Warner hesitates. โ€œBut the point is, we have to lure himย here. Going to him will not work. We have to create a problem big enough for him to be forced to come to us.โ€ He looks at me then. โ€œJuliette says she already has a plan.โ€

I nod. Take a deep breath. Study the faces before me. โ€œI think we should take over Sector 45.โ€

Stunned silence.

โ€œI think, together,โ€ I tell them, โ€œweโ€™ll be able to convince the soldiers to fight on our side. At the end of the day, no one is benefiting from The Reestablishment except for the people in charge. The soldiers are tired and hungry and probably only took this job because there were no other options.โ€ I pause. โ€œWe can rally the civiliansย andย the soldiers. Everyone in

the sector. Get them to join us. And they know me,โ€ I say. โ€œThe soldiers. Theyโ€™ve already seen meโ€”they know what I can do. But all of us together?โ€ I shake my head. โ€œThat would be amazing. We could show them that weโ€™re different. Stronger. We can give them hopeโ€”a reason to fight back.

โ€œAnd then,โ€ I say, โ€œonce we have their support, news will spread, and Anderson will be forced to come back here. Heโ€™ll have to try and take us downโ€”heโ€™ll have no other choice. And once heโ€™s back, we take him out. We fight him and his army and we win. And then we take over the country.โ€

โ€œMy goodness.โ€

Castle is the first to speak.

โ€œMs. Ferrars,โ€ he says, โ€œyouโ€™ve given this a great deal of thought.โ€ I nod.

Kenji is looking at me like heโ€™s not sure if he should laugh or applaud. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€ I ask, looking around.

โ€œWhat if it doesnโ€™t work?โ€ Lily says. โ€œWhat if the soldiers are too scared to change their allegiance? What if they kill you instead?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a definite possibility,โ€ I say. โ€œBut I think if weโ€™re strong enough

โ€”if the nine of us stand united, with all of our strengths combinedโ€”I think theyโ€™ll believe we can do something pretty amazing.โ€

โ€œYeah but how will they know what our strengths are?โ€ Brendan asks. โ€œWhat if they donโ€™t believe us?โ€

โ€œWe can show them.โ€

โ€œAnd if they shoot us?โ€ Ian counters.

โ€œI can do it alone, if youโ€™re worried about that. I donโ€™t mind. Kenji was teaching me how to project my energy before the war, and I think if I can learn to master that, I could do some pretty scary things. Things that might impress them enough to join us.โ€

โ€œYou canย project?โ€ Winston asks, eyes wide. โ€œYou mean you can, like, mass-kill everyone with your life-sucking thing?โ€

โ€œUm, no,โ€ I say. โ€œI mean, well, yes, I suppose I could do that, too, but Iโ€™m not talking about that. I mean I can project my strength. Not the โ€ฆ life- sucking thingโ€”โ€

โ€œWait, what strength?โ€ Brendan asks, confused. โ€œI thought itโ€™s your skin thatโ€™s lethal?โ€

Iโ€™m about to respond when I remember that Brendan and Winston and Ian were all taken hostage before Iโ€™d begun to seriously train. I donโ€™t know

that they knew much about my progress at all.

So I start from the top.

โ€œMy โ€ฆ power,โ€ I say, โ€œhas to do with more than just my skin.โ€ I glance at Kenji. Gesture to him. โ€œWeโ€™d been working together for a while, trying to figure out what it was, exactly, I was capable of, and Kenji realized that my true energy is coming from deep within me, not the surface. Itโ€™s in my bones, my blood,ย andย my skin,โ€ I try to explain. โ€œMy real power is an insane kind of superstrength.

โ€œMy skin is just one element of that,โ€ I tell them. โ€œItโ€™s like the most heightened form of my energy, and the craziest form of protection; itโ€™s like my body has put up a shield. Metaphorical barbed wire. It keeps intruders away.โ€ I almost laugh, wondering when it became so easy for me to talk about this stuff. To be comfortable with it. โ€œBut Iโ€™m also strong enough to break through just about anything,โ€ I tell them, โ€œand without even injuring myself. Concrete. Brick. Glassโ€”โ€

โ€œThe earth,โ€ Kenji adds.

โ€œYes,โ€ I say, smiling at him. โ€œEven the earth.โ€

โ€œShe created an earthquake,โ€ Alia says eagerly, and Iโ€™m actually surprised to hear her voice. โ€œDuring the first battle,โ€ she tells Brendan and Winston and Ian. โ€œWhen we were trying to save you guys. She punched the ground and it split open. Thatโ€™s how we were able to get away.โ€

The guys are gawking at me.

โ€œSo, what Iโ€™m trying to say,โ€ I tell them, โ€œis that if I can project my strength, and really learn to control it? I donโ€™t know.โ€ I shrug. โ€œI could move mountains, probably.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a bit ambitious.โ€ Kenji grins, ever the proud parent. โ€œAmbitious, but probably not impossible.โ€ I grin back.

โ€œWow,โ€ Lily says. โ€œSo you can just โ€ฆ destroy stuff? Like, anything?โ€ I nod. Glance at Warner. โ€œDo you mind?โ€

โ€œNot at all,โ€ he says. His eyes are carefully inscrutable.

I get to my feet and walk over to the stacks of dumbbells, all the while prepping myself mentally to tap into my energy. This is still the trickiest part for me: learning how to moderate my strength with finesse.

I pick up a fifty-pound free weight and carry it over to the group.

For a moment I wonder if this should feel heavy to me, especially considering how it weighs about half of what I do, but I canโ€™t really feel it.

I sit back down on the bench. Rest the weight on the ground.

โ€œWhat are you going to do with that?โ€ Ian asks, eyes wide. โ€œWhat do you want me to do?โ€ I ask him.

โ€œYouโ€™re telling me you can just, like, rip that apart or whatever?โ€ Winston says.

I nod.

โ€œDo it,โ€ Kenji says. Heโ€™s practically bouncing in his seat. โ€œDo it do it.โ€ So I do.

I pick it up, and literally crush the weight between my hands. It becomes a mangled mess of metal. A fifty-pound lump. I rip it in half and drop the two pieces on the floor.

The benches shake.

โ€œSorry,โ€ I say quickly, looking around. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to toss it like that

โ€”โ€

โ€œGoddamn,โ€ Ian says. โ€œThat is so cool.โ€ โ€œDo it again,โ€ Winston says, eyes bright.

โ€œIโ€™d really rather she didnโ€™t destroy all of my property,โ€ Warner cuts in. โ€œHey, soโ€”waitโ€”,โ€ Winston says, realizing something as he stares at

Warner. โ€œYou can do that, too, canโ€™t you? You can just take her power and use it like that, too?โ€

โ€œI can take all of your powers,โ€ Warner corrects him. โ€œAnd do whatever I want with them.โ€

The terror in the room is a very palpable thing. I frown at Warner. โ€œPlease donโ€™t scare them.โ€ He says nothing. Looks at nothing.

โ€œSo the two of youโ€โ€”Ian tries to find his voiceโ€”โ€œI mean, togetherโ€” you two could basicallyโ€”โ€

โ€œTake over the world?โ€ Warner is looking at the wall now.

โ€œI was going to say you could kick some serious ass, but yeah, that, too, I guess.โ€ Ian shakes his head.

โ€œAre you sure you trust this guy?โ€ Lily asks me, jerking a thumb at Warner and looking at me like sheโ€™s seriously, genuinely concerned. โ€œWhat if heโ€™s just using you for your power?โ€

โ€œI trust him with my life,โ€ I say quietly. โ€œI already have, and Iโ€™d do it again.โ€

Warner looks at me and looks away, and for a brief second I catch the charge of emotion in his eyes.

โ€œSo, let me get this straight,โ€ Winston says. โ€œOur plan is to basically seduce the soldiers and civilians of Sector 45 into fighting with us?โ€

Kenji crosses his arms. โ€œYeah, it sounds like weโ€™re going to go all peacock and hope they find us attractive enough to mate with.โ€

โ€œGross.โ€ Brendan frowns.

โ€œDespite how weird Kenji just made this sound,โ€ I say, shooting a stern look in his direction, โ€œthe answer is yes, basically. We can provide them with a group to rally around. We take charge of the army, and then take charge of the people. And then we lead them into battle. We really, truly fight back.โ€

โ€œAnd if you win?โ€ Castle asks. Heโ€™s been so quiet all this time. โ€œWhat do you plan to do then?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ I ask.

โ€œLetโ€™s say you are successful,โ€ he says. โ€œYou defeat the supreme. You kill him and his men. Then what? Who will take over as the supreme commander?โ€

โ€œI will.โ€

The room gasps. I feel Warner go stiff beside me. โ€œDamn, princess,โ€ Kenji says quietly.

โ€œAnd then?โ€ Castle asks, ignoring everyone but me. โ€œAfter that?โ€ His eyes are worried. Scared, almost. โ€œYouโ€™re going to kill whoever else stands in your way? All the other sector leaders, all across the nation? Thatโ€™s 554 more warsโ€”โ€

โ€œSome will surrender,โ€ I tell him.

โ€œAnd the others?โ€ he asks. โ€œHow can you lead a nation in the right direction when youโ€™ve just slaughtered all who oppose you? How will you be any different from those youโ€™ve defeated?โ€

โ€œI trust myself,โ€ I tell him, โ€œto be strong enough to do whatโ€™s right. Our world is dying right now. You said yourself that we have the means to reclaim our landโ€”to change things back to the way they were. Once power is in the right placeโ€”withย usโ€”you can rebuild what you started at Omega Point. Youโ€™ll have the freedom to implement those changes to our land, water, animals, and atmosphere, and save millions of lives in the processโ€” giving the new generations hope for a different future. We have to try,โ€ I tell him. โ€œWe canโ€™t just sit back and watch people die when we have the power to make a difference.โ€

The room goes silent. Still.

โ€œHell,โ€ Winston says. โ€œIโ€™d follow you into battle.โ€ โ€œMe too,โ€ Alia says.

โ€œAnd me.โ€ Brendan.

โ€œYou know Iโ€™m in,โ€ Kenji says.

โ€œMe too,โ€ Lily and Ian say at the same time.

Castle takes a deep breath. โ€œMaybe,โ€ he says. He leans back in his chair, clasps his hands. โ€œMaybe youโ€™ll be able to do right what I did wrong.โ€ He shakes his head. โ€œI am twenty-seven years your senior and Iโ€™ve never had your confidence, but I do understand your heart. And I trust that you say what you believe to be true.โ€ A pause. A careful look. โ€œWe will support you. But know now that you are taking on a great and terrifying responsibility. One that may backfire in an irreversible way.โ€

โ€œI do understand that,โ€ I say quietly.

โ€œVery well then, Ms. Ferrars. Good luck, and godspeed. Our world is in your hands.โ€
