Chapter no 29

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Warner is holding my hand.

I only have enough energy to focus on this single, strange fact as he leads me down the stairs and into the parking garage. He opens the door of the tank and helps me in before closing it behind me.

He climbs into the other side. Turns on the engine.

Weโ€™re already on the road and Iโ€™ve blinked only six times since we left Adamโ€™s house.

I still canโ€™t believe what just happened. I canโ€™t believe weโ€™re all going to be working together. I canโ€™t believe I told Warner what to do and heย listened to me.

I turn to look at him. Itโ€™s strange: Iโ€™ve never felt so safe or so relieved to be beside him. I never thought I could feel this way with him.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I whisper, grateful and guilty, somehow, about everything thatโ€™s happened. About leaving Adam behind. I realize now that Iโ€™ve made the kind of choice I canโ€™t undo. My heart is still breaking. โ€œReally,โ€ I say again. โ€œThank you so much. For coming to get me. I appreciateโ€”โ€

โ€œPlease,โ€ he says. โ€œIโ€™m begging you to stop.โ€ I still.

โ€œI canโ€™t stomach your pain,โ€ he says. โ€œI can feel it so strongly and itโ€™s making me crazyโ€”please,โ€ he says to me. โ€œDonโ€™t be sad. Or hurt. Or guilty. Youโ€™ve done nothing wrong.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be sorry, either,โ€ he says. โ€œGod, the only reason Iโ€™m not going to kill Kent for this is because I know it would only upset you more.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ I say after a moment. โ€œBut itโ€™s not just him.โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€ he asks. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want you to kill anyone at all,โ€ I say. โ€œNot just Adam.โ€

Warner laughs a sharp, strange laugh. He looks almost relieved. โ€œDo you have any other stipulations?โ€

โ€œNot really.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t want to fix me, then? You donโ€™t have a long list of things I need to work on?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I stare out the window. The view is so bleak. So cold. Covered in ice and snow. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing wrong with you that isnโ€™t already wrong with me,โ€ I say quietly. โ€œAnd if I were smart Iโ€™d first figure out how to fix myself.โ€

Weโ€™re both silent awhile. The tension is so thick in this small space. โ€œAaron?โ€ I say, still watching the scenery fly by.

I hear the small hitch in his breath. The hesitation. Itโ€™s the first time Iโ€™ve used his first name so casually.

โ€œYes?โ€ he says.

โ€œI want you to know,โ€ I tell him, โ€œthat I donโ€™t think youโ€™re crazy.โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€ He startles.

โ€œI donโ€™t think youโ€™re crazy.โ€ The world is blurring away as I watch it through the window. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t think youโ€™re a psychopath. I also donโ€™t think youโ€™re a sick, twisted monster. I donโ€™t think youโ€™re a heartless murderer, and I donโ€™t think you deserve to die, and I donโ€™t think youโ€™re pathetic. Or stupid. Or a coward. I donโ€™t think youโ€™re any of the things people have said about you.โ€

I turn to look at him.

Warner is staring out the windshield.

โ€œYou donโ€™t?โ€ His voice is so soft and so scared I can scarcely hear it. โ€œNo,โ€ I say. โ€œI donโ€™t. And I just thought you should know. Iโ€™m not

trying to fix you; I donโ€™t think you need to be fixed. Iโ€™m not trying to turn you into someone else. I only want you to be who you really are. Because I think I know the real you. I think Iโ€™ve seen him.โ€

Warner says nothing, his chest rising and falling.

โ€œI donโ€™t care what anyone else says about you,โ€ I tell him. โ€œI think youโ€™re a good person.โ€

Warner is blinking fast now. I can hear him breathing. In and out.

Unevenly.

He says nothing.

โ€œDo you โ€ฆ believe me?โ€ I ask after a moment. โ€œCan you sense that Iโ€™m telling the truth? That I really mean it?โ€

Warnerโ€™s hands are clenched around the steering wheel. His knuckles are white.

He nods.

Just once.
