Chapter no 9

The Lost Symbol

INSIDE THE Statuary Hall, Robert Langdon clutched his cell phone to his ear and paced in a tight circle. โ€œWho the hell are you?โ€

The manโ€™s reply was a silky calm whisper. โ€œDo not be alarmed, Professor. You have been summoned here for a reason.โ€

โ€œSummoned?โ€ Langdon felt like a caged animal. โ€œTry kidnapped!โ€

โ€œHardly.โ€ The manโ€™s voice was eerily serene. โ€œIf I wanted to harm you, you would be dead in your Town Car right now.โ€ He let the words hang for a moment. โ€œMy intentions are purely noble, I assure you. I would simply like to offer you an invitation.โ€

No thanks.ย Ever since his experiences in Europe over the last several years, Langdonโ€™s unwanted celebrity had made him a magnet for nutcases, and this one had just crossed a very serious line. โ€œLook, I donโ€™t know what the hell is going on here, but Iโ€™m hanging up

โ€”โ€

โ€œUnwise,โ€ said the man. โ€œYour window of opportunity is very small if you want to save Peter Solomonโ€™s soul.โ€

Langdon drew a sharp breath. โ€œWhat did you say?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sure you heard me.โ€

The way this man had uttered Peterโ€™s name had stopped Langdon cold. โ€œWhat do you know about Peter?โ€

โ€œAt this point, I know his deepest secrets. Mr. Solomon is my guest, and I can be a persuasive host.โ€

This canโ€™t be happening.ย โ€œYou donโ€™t have Peter.โ€

โ€œI answered his private cell phone. That should give you pause.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m calling the police.โ€

โ€œNo need,โ€ the man said. โ€œThe authorities will join you momentarily.โ€

What is this lunatic talking about?ย Langdonโ€™s tone hardened. โ€œIf you have Peter, put him on the phone right now.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s impossible. Mr. Solomon is trapped in an unfortunate place.โ€ The man paused. โ€œHe is in the Araf.โ€

โ€œWhere?โ€ย Langdon realized he was clutching his phone so tightly his fingers were going numb.

โ€œThe Araf? Hamistagan? That place to which Dante devoted the canticle immediately following his legendaryย Inferno?โ€

The manโ€™s religious and literary references solidified Langdonโ€™s suspicion that he was dealing with a madman.ย The second canticle.ย Langdon knew it well; nobody escaped Phillips Exeter Academy without reading Dante. โ€œYouโ€™re saying you think Peter Solomon is โ€ฆ inย purgatory?โ€

โ€œA crude word you Christians use, but yes, Mr. Solomon is in theย in-between.โ€ย The manโ€™s words hung in Langdonโ€™s ear. โ€œAre you saying Peter is โ€ฆย dead?โ€ย โ€œNot exactly, no.โ€

โ€œNot exactly?!โ€ Langdon yelled, his voice echoing sharply in the hall. A family of tourists looked over at him. He turned away and lowered his voice.ย โ€œDeathย is usually an all-or-nothing thing!โ€

โ€œYou surprise me, Professor. I expected you to have a better understanding of the mysteries of life and death. Thereย isย a world in betweenโ€”a world in which Peter Solomon is hovering at the moment. He can either return to your world, or he can move on to the next โ€ฆ depending on your actions right now.โ€

Langdon tried to process this. โ€œWhat do you want from me?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s simple. You have been given access to something quite ancient. And tonight, you will share it with me.โ€

โ€œI have no idea what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

โ€œNo? You pretend not to understand the ancient secrets that have been entrusted to you?โ€

Langdon felt a sudden sinking sensation, now guessing what this was probably about.

Ancient secrets.ย He had not uttered a word to anyone about his experiences in Paris several years earlier, but Grail fanatics had followed the media coverage closely, some connecting the dots and believing Langdon was now privy to secret information regarding the Holy Grailโ€”perhaps even its location.

โ€œLook,โ€ Langdon said, โ€œif this is about the Holy Grail, I can assure you I know nothing more thanโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t insult my intelligence, Mr. Langdon,โ€ the man snapped. โ€œI have no interest in anything so frivolous as the Holy Grail or mankindโ€™s pathetic debate over whose version of history is correct. Circular arguments over the semantics of faith hold no interest for me. Those are questions answered only through death.โ€

The stark words left Langdon confused. โ€œThen what the hell is this about?โ€

The man paused for several seconds. โ€œAs you may know, there exists within this city an ancient portal.โ€

An ancient portal?

โ€œAnd tonight, Professor, you will unlock it for me. You should be honored I contacted youโ€”this is the invitation of your lifetime. You alone have been chosen.โ€

And you have lost your mind.ย โ€œIโ€™m sorry, but youโ€™ve chosen poorly,โ€ Langdon said. โ€œI donโ€™t know anything about any ancient portal.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t understand, Professor. It was notย Iย who chose you โ€ฆ it wasย Peter Solomon.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Langdon replied, his voice barely a whisper.

โ€œMr. Solomon told me how to find the portal, and he confessed to me that only one man on earth could unlock it. And he said that man isย you.โ€

โ€œIf Peter said that, he was mistaken โ€ฆ or lying.โ€

โ€œI think not. He was in a fragile state when he confessed that fact, and I am inclined to believe him.โ€

Langdon felt a stab of anger. โ€œIโ€™m warning you, if you hurt Peter in anyโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s far too late forย that,โ€œ the man said in an amused tone. โ€œIโ€™ve already taken what I need from Peter Solomon. But for his sake, I suggest you provide what I need fromย you.ย Time is of the essence โ€ฆ forย bothย of you. I suggest you find the portal and unlock it. Peter will point the way.โ€

Peter?ย โ€œI thought you said Peter was in โ€˜purgatory.โ€™ โ€ โ€œAs above, so below,โ€ the man said.

Langdon felt a deepening chill. This strange response was an ancient Hermetic adage that proclaimed a belief in the physical connection between heaven and earth.ย As above, so below.ย Langdon eyed the vast room and wondered how everything had veered so suddenly out of control tonight. โ€œLook, I donโ€™t know how to find any ancient portal. Iโ€™m calling the police.โ€

โ€œIt really hasnโ€™t dawned on you yet, has it? Why you were chosen?โ€ โ€œNo,โ€ Langdon said.

โ€œItย will,โ€ย he replied, chuckling. โ€œAny moment now.โ€ Then the line went dead.

Langdon stood rigid for several terrifying moments, trying to process what had just happened.

Suddenly, in the distance, he heard an unexpected sound. It was coming from the Rotunda.

Someone was screaming.
