Chapter no 19

The Wife Upstairs

I lie in bed, my eyes drifting shut as I finish Victoriaโ€™s latest diary entry. Just as I suspected, she got the ultimate romantic proposal.

And then Adam threw away her beloved chair. The Papasan chair that she imagined giving to her children.

It was a jerk move. Iโ€™m having trouble justifying in my head that he would do such a thing to her, especially since he seems like such a nice guy. And he obviously loves her so much. But then again, I wasnโ€™t there. Iโ€™m willing to believe this chair was extremely disgusting. I remember when I was living with Freddy, he got a bookcase off the curb, and even though we were dirt poor, I just couldnโ€™t allow this bookcase to remain in my home. The wood was all splintered and it smelled like urine.

That Papasan chair might have been as bad as that bookcase.

Anyway, aside from that, Adam was the perfect boyfriend, based on all the things Victoria wrote about him in her diary. She had, in many ways, a charmed life. If I didnโ€™t know how things ended up for her, I would probably hate Victoria for how wonderful her life was back then. She had a job she loved, a perfect boyfriend, and she was about to get married to her soulmate.

I canโ€™t stop thinking about the bullet hole in the tree.

When Victoria said nub, she meant gun. So is she saying Adam has a gun? And if so, wellโ€ฆ so what? So he shot a gun at a tree in their yard. Is that a crime?

Well, at least now I can stop looking for that Papasan chair.
