Dear residents of Pine Street,
Just a reminder for those of you with pets or who are considering purchasing pets:
There are no loud noises such as barking permitted on the block after 10 PM.
Please donโt leave fecal matter from your dog on the street for the rest of us to clean up.
Pets should never be outside of the house without a leash. If they are in your backyard, I would expect them to be tied to a tree by their leash.
There is a limit to one dog per household.
Prior to purchasing a pet, you must submit a written application to the block captain (Julie Bressler). Your application must include the breed, weight, and size of the animal.
Sincerely,
Julie Bressler, Block Captain
This afternoon, Sean took the boys to the park to practice soccer.
I felt a bit uneasy about the whole thing, because Maria and Sean have been treating me somewhat coldly lately. I donโt know why, because Iโm perfectly nice to them both. It seems like Maria goes out of her way to avoid me lately.
Anyway, Maria is at work this afternoon, so it was just Sean and the boys. And Bobby was so excited about it, there was no way I could say no.
Also, the fall carnival is next weekend, and between helping organize that and squeezing in an extra episode ofย Sweet Secretsย to make up for the one I didnโt get to do at the nursing home, Iโve been overwhelmed. Two of our volunteers just backed out this week, so right now, Iโm going to be
selling tickets and also running the bake sale. And of course, Iโve got the silent auction to worry about. Helping with this carnival is a job in itself.
On the plus side, I havenโt gotten any more mysterious text messages.
Maybe whoever was harassing me decided Iโve had enough.
After spending the whole afternoon making calls to some of our sponsors and confirming the inflatable company got their payment, I decide to relax a bit with some baking. I pull out my recipe for a pineapple upside- down cake, which I havenโt made in ages. I absolutely love pineapple upside-down cake. The buttery, brown sugary pineapple juice that seeps down into the cake from the slices on top make the cakes so moist, soft, and buttery. I did a show on pineapple upside-down cake last year. My secret is using tons of butter, and also substituting pineapple juice in the recipe for water.
And as luck would have it, itโs cooling off just as itโs time to pick up Bobby from the Cooper house.
I put the upside-down cake onto a plate and carry it over to the Cooper house. I remember how excited Sean was over my apple turnovers, so I figure heโll really enjoy this. Nothing makes me happier than somebody who loves my cooking.
I ring the doorbell with my right hand while balancing the cake on my left. After a few moments, the door swings open and Sean is standing there wearing jeans and a T-shirt, except the T-shirt does very little to conceal the muscles in his chest. His eyes widen when he sees the cake.
โI brought you an upside-down cake,โ I announce. โFresh out of the oven.โ
โWowโฆโ He steps back to let me inside. โThat looks great. Butโฆ well, I donโt want to spoil dinner. So I better not.โ
โOne piece isnโt going to spoil your dinner!โ
โYeahโฆโ He runs a hand through his thick brown hair. It makes me miss when Elliot used to have hair. โI better not.โ
Wow, great. Now what am I supposed to do with this huge cake? โMaybe Iโll just leave it in the kitchen then. You can have some after dinner.โ
โOkay.โ Sean follows me to the kitchen, and while I gently lower my cake onto the counter, he hollers out to Bobby in the backyard that his mother is waiting. โHe says heโs coming.โ
โOkay, thanks.โ
He rifles through some papers on the kitchen counter. โHey, can I ask you something?โ
My stomach flutters. โYes?โ
He picks up a piece of paper and shakes it in his hand. โSo I mentioned to Julie when I saw her the other day on the street that we were thinking about getting a dog. And today I found this taped to our door. Is she for real with this?โ
I take the piece of paper. Itโs Julieโs standard dog rules. โNo, itโs not a joke.โ
โWho does she think she is?โ He shakes the paper again and it crumbles in his big hands. โIโm not submitting anย applicationย to her. Itโs my house and my property. If I want a dog, Iโll get a goddamn dog.โ
โYou should.โ It will drive Julie absolutely crazy. โYou should get a pit bull.โ
He grins crookedly. He has a very cute smile. โYou know, I think I will.โ
I really, really hope he gets a pit bull.
โAnyway.โ Sean looks down at the cake and then back at me. โSoโฆ are you going to grab Bobby orโฆ? Because Owen has to get started on his homeworkโฆโ
And thatโs when I realize he wants me out of here. He wants me to take my kid and get out. He doesnโt want to sit around eating slices of pineapple upside-down cake. He doesnโt want to chitchat about our kids. He wants me to go.ย Now.
โApril?โ
I startle at the sound of Mariaโs voice. Where did she come from? Why didnโt I hear her key in the lock? Or her feet on the floor behind me? All of a sudden, sheโs justย there.
โHi, Maria!โ I say in my most chipper voice. I whirl around to look at her, and she doesnโt look happy. Iโd say she looks downright pissed off. โYouโre homeโฆ early.โ
โYes,โ she says. โThat I am.โ
โHey, hon.โ Sean goes right over to her and tries to put his arm around her waist, but she pulls away from him. He looks uncomfortable and scratches at his beard. โHow was work?โ
โFine.โ Mariaโs brown eyes are still focused on me. โAnd how was your day?โ
Before Sean can answer, I pipe up, โSean brought the boys to the park. And I was picking up Bobby, so I brought over some pineapple upside- down cake.โ
โHow nice,โ Maria murmurs.
And then we all just stand there in horrible, uncomfortable silence.
Thankfully, the silence is broken by the boys finally storming back into the house. Both of their sneakers are caked in dirt, and my heart bleeds for Mariaโs floor, but she doesnโt seem to care. She wants me out of here. They both do.
I donโt get it. I wasnโt doing anything wrong. I just came in to pick up my son and drop off some cake. Is that a crime? Yes, I was alone with her husband, but so what? Itโs not like we wereย kissing. He was barely even tolerating me.
โBobby,โ I say in that same high-pitched chipper voice. I canโt seem to make my voice normal again. Iโve lost the ability. โItโs time to go home!โ
โNo!โ Bobby stomps his sneakers on the floor, which isnโt making the dirt situation better. โI want to stay. Can we stay for dinner, Mom? Please?โ
Ohย God, no. โIโm afraid not. Maybe another time.โ โWhy not?โ
Would it be too much to hope for that just one time Bobby would accept my telling him no without asking why not? โBecause weโre busy tonight.โ
โWe are? Busy doing what? โBusy having dinner as a family.โ
โBut we can do that any night. Why canโt we have dinner here tonight?โ
Sean and Maria are both staring at me, waiting to hear what bullshit Iโll come up with. โWeโll do it another night.โ
โWhy not tonight?โ
โBecause itโs too last minute.โ โSo?โ
Sometimes I want to throttle that kid. โI told you, Bobby, weโll do it another night!โ
โWhen?โ
Guh! Finally, miraculously, Maria takes pity on me. She bends down to talk to my son. โHow about sometime next week, Bobby? We can order pizza.โ
If I said that, Iโm sure he wouldโve pressed me harder for a day, but heโs better behaved around strangers than his own parents. He nods, and for the moment, thatโs the end of it.
Maria walks us to the front door so she can lock it behind us. I keep looking over at her, trying to read her expression. When I first met Maria, she seemed so sweet and uncomplicated. Now I donโt know what to think anymore. I canโt stop thinking about what she did to that babysitter in her store. And now she seems to have a problem withย me.
And thereโs something about this house that makes me nervous too.
Something I canโt entirely put my finger on.
โMaria.โ I offer her my warmest smile when we get to the doorโone I usually reserve for the camera. โThank you so much for having Bobby over this afternoon.โ
She doesnโt return the smile. โWell, Sean was the one watching them.โ โYes, butโฆโ I take a deep breath. โI just wanted to tell you how nice it
is having you next door. Itโs nice having a friend who lives so close.โ โYes.โ She still isnโt smiling. โItย isย nice.โ
โReally.โ I know I should probably shut up, but I canโt help babbling on. โThis is exactly what I always wanted. I donโt think I told you this, but for years, we had a neighbor living here who was just so unpleasantโฆโ
โDoris Kirkland,โ she says.
I stop, my mouth hanging open. โOh. I didnโt know you knew her.โ
And then I think back to the other day, when Mrs. Kirklandโs niece came by. How she had been talking about the life alert necklace.ย She was scared about breaking a hip, you know? I couldnโt believe she didnโt have it on.
If this were a movie, Iโd say for sure somebody pushed her.
โWell, we bought the house from her niece.โ Maria shrugs. โGuess the name mustโve come up.โ
Coming over here with my pineapple upside-down cake was a mistake.
I sort of want to go back to the kitchen and retrieve it, but I donโt dare. โAnyway,โ I say. โI just wanted to say thank you for being a good
neighbor andโฆ well, thatโs all.โ
Finally, Mariaโs lips curl into a smile. โItโs nice having you as a neighbor too.โ
And then I get the hell off her front porch.
