Chapter no 21

Want to Know a Secret?

Dear residents of Pine Street,

Just a reminder for those of you with pets or who are considering purchasing pets:

There are no loud noises such as barking permitted on the block after 10 PM.

Please donโ€™t leave fecal matter from your dog on the street for the rest of us to clean up.

Pets should never be outside of the house without a leash. If they are in your backyard, I would expect them to be tied to a tree by their leash.

There is a limit to one dog per household.

Prior to purchasing a pet, you must submit a written application to the block captain (Julie Bressler). Your application must include the breed, weight, and size of the animal.

Sincerely,

Julie Bressler, Block Captain

This afternoon, Sean took the boys to the park to practice soccer.

I felt a bit uneasy about the whole thing, because Maria and Sean have been treating me somewhat coldly lately. I donโ€™t know why, because Iโ€™m perfectly nice to them both. It seems like Maria goes out of her way to avoid me lately.

Anyway, Maria is at work this afternoon, so it was just Sean and the boys. And Bobby was so excited about it, there was no way I could say no.

Also, the fall carnival is next weekend, and between helping organize that and squeezing in an extra episode ofย Sweet Secretsย to make up for the one I didnโ€™t get to do at the nursing home, Iโ€™ve been overwhelmed. Two of our volunteers just backed out this week, so right now, Iโ€™m going to be

selling tickets and also running the bake sale. And of course, Iโ€™ve got the silent auction to worry about. Helping with this carnival is a job in itself.

On the plus side, I havenโ€™t gotten any more mysterious text messages.

Maybe whoever was harassing me decided Iโ€™ve had enough.

After spending the whole afternoon making calls to some of our sponsors and confirming the inflatable company got their payment, I decide to relax a bit with some baking. I pull out my recipe for a pineapple upside- down cake, which I havenโ€™t made in ages. I absolutely love pineapple upside-down cake. The buttery, brown sugary pineapple juice that seeps down into the cake from the slices on top make the cakes so moist, soft, and buttery. I did a show on pineapple upside-down cake last year. My secret is using tons of butter, and also substituting pineapple juice in the recipe for water.

And as luck would have it, itโ€™s cooling off just as itโ€™s time to pick up Bobby from the Cooper house.

I put the upside-down cake onto a plate and carry it over to the Cooper house. I remember how excited Sean was over my apple turnovers, so I figure heโ€™ll really enjoy this. Nothing makes me happier than somebody who loves my cooking.

I ring the doorbell with my right hand while balancing the cake on my left. After a few moments, the door swings open and Sean is standing there wearing jeans and a T-shirt, except the T-shirt does very little to conceal the muscles in his chest. His eyes widen when he sees the cake.

โ€œI brought you an upside-down cake,โ€ I announce. โ€œFresh out of the oven.โ€

โ€œWowโ€ฆโ€ He steps back to let me inside. โ€œThat looks great. Butโ€ฆ well, I donโ€™t want to spoil dinner. So I better not.โ€

โ€œOne piece isnโ€™t going to spoil your dinner!โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€ He runs a hand through his thick brown hair. It makes me miss when Elliot used to have hair. โ€œI better not.โ€

Wow, great. Now what am I supposed to do with this huge cake? โ€œMaybe Iโ€™ll just leave it in the kitchen then. You can have some after dinner.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Sean follows me to the kitchen, and while I gently lower my cake onto the counter, he hollers out to Bobby in the backyard that his mother is waiting. โ€œHe says heโ€™s coming.โ€

โ€œOkay, thanks.โ€

He rifles through some papers on the kitchen counter. โ€œHey, can I ask you something?โ€

My stomach flutters. โ€œYes?โ€

He picks up a piece of paper and shakes it in his hand. โ€œSo I mentioned to Julie when I saw her the other day on the street that we were thinking about getting a dog. And today I found this taped to our door. Is she for real with this?โ€

I take the piece of paper. Itโ€™s Julieโ€™s standard dog rules. โ€œNo, itโ€™s not a joke.โ€

โ€œWho does she think she is?โ€ He shakes the paper again and it crumbles in his big hands. โ€œIโ€™m not submitting anย applicationย to her. Itโ€™s my house and my property. If I want a dog, Iโ€™ll get a goddamn dog.โ€

โ€œYou should.โ€ It will drive Julie absolutely crazy. โ€œYou should get a pit bull.โ€

He grins crookedly. He has a very cute smile. โ€œYou know, I think I will.โ€

I really, really hope he gets a pit bull.

โ€œAnyway.โ€ Sean looks down at the cake and then back at me. โ€œSoโ€ฆ are you going to grab Bobby orโ€ฆ? Because Owen has to get started on his homeworkโ€ฆโ€

And thatโ€™s when I realize he wants me out of here. He wants me to take my kid and get out. He doesnโ€™t want to sit around eating slices of pineapple upside-down cake. He doesnโ€™t want to chitchat about our kids. He wants me to go.ย Now.

โ€œApril?โ€

I startle at the sound of Mariaโ€™s voice. Where did she come from? Why didnโ€™t I hear her key in the lock? Or her feet on the floor behind me? All of a sudden, sheโ€™s justย there.

โ€œHi, Maria!โ€ I say in my most chipper voice. I whirl around to look at her, and she doesnโ€™t look happy. Iโ€™d say she looks downright pissed off. โ€œYouโ€™re homeโ€ฆ early.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ she says. โ€œThat I am.โ€

โ€œHey, hon.โ€ Sean goes right over to her and tries to put his arm around her waist, but she pulls away from him. He looks uncomfortable and scratches at his beard. โ€œHow was work?โ€

โ€œFine.โ€ Mariaโ€™s brown eyes are still focused on me. โ€œAnd how was your day?โ€

Before Sean can answer, I pipe up, โ€œSean brought the boys to the park. And I was picking up Bobby, so I brought over some pineapple upside- down cake.โ€

โ€œHow nice,โ€ Maria murmurs.

And then we all just stand there in horrible, uncomfortable silence.

Thankfully, the silence is broken by the boys finally storming back into the house. Both of their sneakers are caked in dirt, and my heart bleeds for Mariaโ€™s floor, but she doesnโ€™t seem to care. She wants me out of here. They both do.

I donโ€™t get it. I wasnโ€™t doing anything wrong. I just came in to pick up my son and drop off some cake. Is that a crime? Yes, I was alone with her husband, but so what? Itโ€™s not like we wereย kissing. He was barely even tolerating me.

โ€œBobby,โ€ I say in that same high-pitched chipper voice. I canโ€™t seem to make my voice normal again. Iโ€™ve lost the ability. โ€œItโ€™s time to go home!โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Bobby stomps his sneakers on the floor, which isnโ€™t making the dirt situation better. โ€œI want to stay. Can we stay for dinner, Mom? Please?โ€

Ohย God, no. โ€œIโ€™m afraid not. Maybe another time.โ€ โ€œWhy not?โ€

Would it be too much to hope for that just one time Bobby would accept my telling him no without asking why not? โ€œBecause weโ€™re busy tonight.โ€

โ€œWe are? Busy doing what? โ€œBusy having dinner as a family.โ€

โ€œBut we can do that any night. Why canโ€™t we have dinner here tonight?โ€

Sean and Maria are both staring at me, waiting to hear what bullshit Iโ€™ll come up with. โ€œWeโ€™ll do it another night.โ€

โ€œWhy not tonight?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s too last minute.โ€ โ€œSo?โ€

Sometimes I want to throttle that kid. โ€œI told you, Bobby, weโ€™ll do it another night!โ€

โ€œWhen?โ€

Guh! Finally, miraculously, Maria takes pity on me. She bends down to talk to my son. โ€œHow about sometime next week, Bobby? We can order pizza.โ€

If I said that, Iโ€™m sure he wouldโ€™ve pressed me harder for a day, but heโ€™s better behaved around strangers than his own parents. He nods, and for the moment, thatโ€™s the end of it.

Maria walks us to the front door so she can lock it behind us. I keep looking over at her, trying to read her expression. When I first met Maria, she seemed so sweet and uncomplicated. Now I donโ€™t know what to think anymore. I canโ€™t stop thinking about what she did to that babysitter in her store. And now she seems to have a problem withย me.

And thereโ€™s something about this house that makes me nervous too.

Something I canโ€™t entirely put my finger on.

โ€œMaria.โ€ I offer her my warmest smile when we get to the doorโ€”one I usually reserve for the camera. โ€œThank you so much for having Bobby over this afternoon.โ€

She doesnโ€™t return the smile. โ€œWell, Sean was the one watching them.โ€ โ€œYes, butโ€ฆโ€ I take a deep breath. โ€œI just wanted to tell you how nice it

is having you next door. Itโ€™s nice having a friend who lives so close.โ€ โ€œYes.โ€ She still isnโ€™t smiling. โ€œItย isย nice.โ€

โ€œReally.โ€ I know I should probably shut up, but I canโ€™t help babbling on. โ€œThis is exactly what I always wanted. I donโ€™t think I told you this, but for years, we had a neighbor living here who was just so unpleasantโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDoris Kirkland,โ€ she says.

I stop, my mouth hanging open. โ€œOh. I didnโ€™t know you knew her.โ€

And then I think back to the other day, when Mrs. Kirklandโ€™s niece came by. How she had been talking about the life alert necklace.ย She was scared about breaking a hip, you know? I couldnโ€™t believe she didnโ€™t have it on.

If this were a movie, Iโ€™d say for sure somebody pushed her.

โ€œWell, we bought the house from her niece.โ€ Maria shrugs. โ€œGuess the name mustโ€™ve come up.โ€

Coming over here with my pineapple upside-down cake was a mistake.

I sort of want to go back to the kitchen and retrieve it, but I donโ€™t dare. โ€œAnyway,โ€ I say. โ€œI just wanted to say thank you for being a good

neighbor andโ€ฆ well, thatโ€™s all.โ€

Finally, Mariaโ€™s lips curl into a smile. โ€œItโ€™s nice having you as a neighbor too.โ€

And then I get the hell off her front porch.
