Olivia
Even though it might not be a real date, I could not possibly be more nervous about going to the diner with Liam tonight.
I tried on every item in my closet last night in front of the mirror. Twice. I put on a skirt that was way too short and I would have loved to have Liam see it on me, but it wouldโve looked like I was trying too hard. (Also, Iโm not entirely sure my mother wouldโve let me out of the house.) Weโre just going out for some food after track team practice, after all. In the end, I decide to go with cute casual. I tug on my cutest skinny jeans, paired with a red tank top. And then I spend another hour in front of the mirror, trying to get my hair just right.
Boys are exhausting.
Right now, Iโm standing in front of the school in my cute tank top and jeans, hugging my body for warmth. My upper arms are covered in tiny little goosebumps, but my jacket isnโt super sexy and I donโt want to wear it in front of Liam. I hope he appreciates how much Iโm suffering for him.
Madison has decided to wait with me, but I almost wish she didnโt. She is not a source of positive energy right now. Sheโs never liked Liam very much, but right now she is downright unsupportive. It seems like sheโs trying to convince me to blow off Liam before this even gets started.
โAnd on top of everything else, heโsย late.โ Madison pulls her phone out of her pocket and shoves it in my face to show me the time. โIs that what you want? A guy whoโs going to keep you waiting all the time?โ
โHe told me he might be late.โ I start jogging in place to keep warm, but then I get freaked out about sweating. โHeโs at track practice. Itโs not his fault if he didnโt get out on time.โ
And not to mention Aidan isย alwaysย late. Itโs almost a guarantee.
Madison sticks out her lower lip in a pout. โI just think heโs wrong for you.โ
โBased on what?โ
โBased onโฆโ She glances around to make sure weโre the only people standing there. โLook, I didnโt want to tell you this, butโฆ you know, Tyler Martinson used to be close friends with Liam.โ
I cringe at the name Tyler Martinson. Heโs one of those obnoxious jock guys who plays football with Aidan. Solely because of that, I was spending some time with him at the beginning of the year, and I wasnโt all that surprised when he asked me out on a date. But I didnโt feel even the slightest bit of attraction to him, so I flat out turned him down. He seemed astonished, like he was doing me aย favorย by asking me out and couldnโt believe I said no. His obnoxious response made me even more glad I said no.
โSo apparentlyโฆโ Madison lowers her voice a notch. โTyler said he had to stop being friends with Liam, because Liam is legit crazy. Like, he would say and do all these crazy things. And Tyler got really freaked out.โ
I suppress the urge to roll my eyes. โCrazy like what?โ
โI donโt know exactly,โ Madison admits. โBut apparently, it was someย reallyย bad stuff. Like, Tyler was actuallyย afraidย of him. He said Liam is really messed up and any girl who gets involved with him will be sorry.โ
Now I really do roll my eyes. โComeย on. You believe that?โ
โYes, I do! Liv, I told you I got a bad vibe about the guy. Thereโs just something about himโฆโ
โWell, I donโt see it.โ โThen youโre blind.โ
I stare at my best friend and feel a burst of anger in my chest. Why is she doing this to me? She knows how much I like Liam. Sheโs dated two complete jerks and I never said one bad word about either of them. Well, thatโs about to change right this minute.
โWell,โ I say, โat least heโs better than Aidan.โ
Madisonโs mouth falls open. โWhat are you talking about? Whatโs wrong with Aidan?โ
โAre you joking? Aidan is a total asshole. He treats you like crap and heโs practically flunking out of school. He bullies underclassmen. And he probably shoots up steroids.โ
Two little pink spots appear on either one of Madisonโs cheeks. โHe doesnโt shoot up steroids.โ
โFine. But all the other stuff is true.โ I look her in the eyes, daring her to contradict me. She doesnโt, because Iโm totally right. โButย Liamย is the awful one. Because he gives you a badย vibe. Oh my God, howย awful.โ
The pink spots on Madisonโs cheeks widen. โFine. You want to go on a date with a psychopath? Be my guest.โ
With those words, Madison spins on her heels and stalks off, probably to find Aidan. Her dirty blond ponytail swings aggressively behind her as she walks away. Weโve had fights before, but this feels like the biggest fight weโve ever had. It makes me uneasy.
But I miraculously forget all that when Liam materializes in front of
me.
He looks devastatingly handsome in his track team T-shirt, baggy
jeans, and a lightweight jacket with his hair slightly damp from the shower. He smiles at me and my heart does a little dance in my chest. So what if Madison and I are fighting? I canโt even think about that right now.
โYou came,โ Liam says, as if heโs slightly surprised and pleased. I return his smile. โOf course I came. I said I would.โ
โYeah, butโฆโ He ducks his head down. โAnyway, Iโm glad youโre here.โ
This guy isย notย crazy. No way. I donโt know what Madison was talking about. Itโs clear Aidan and Tyler are jealous of Liam, because he does so well in school and all the girls think heโs cute.
โYou look cold,โ he observes.
Iโm not going to lie. Iโm pretty freaking cold right now. My teeth are actually chattering a little bit, and my lips feel like theyโre turning blue. But I donโt want to seem like Iโm complaining. โMaybe just a little.โ
And then Liam does something that totally melts me. He takes off his jacket and he holds it out to me. โHere. Take it.โ
โBut thenย youโllย be cold.โ
โNah. Iโm okay. Iโm still hot from running.โ
Iโve never kissed a boy before, but somehow it seems more significant that a boy has never made a gallant, romantic gesture for me before. Iโve had a crush on Liam for several months now, but in this moment, I fall head over heels.
Iโm totally in love.
