Chapter no 11

The Perfect Son

Erika

โ€œErika Cass.โ€

Frankโ€™s Brooklyn accent rings out on the line. Itโ€™s so thick that you know he was born and raised there. I found him four years agoโ€”in the Yellow Pages. I searched under private detectives and selected his name randomly. I had no idea what I was doing, and Iโ€™m lucky that Frank turned out to be as good as he is.

I donโ€™t want to think about what might have happened if not for his

help.

โ€œHi, Frank,โ€ I say. โ€œThanks for calling me back so quickly.โ€ โ€œFor you, Erika? Anything. What do you need?โ€

Frank is a smooth talker. Thatโ€™s what I thought the first and only time I

met him in person three years ago, right before the first job I hired him for. He looked just like he soundedโ€”greasy black hair threaded with gray, yellowing teeth from years of smoking, and sharp eyes that didnโ€™t miss a thing. The man made me nervous. But heโ€™s always done everything Iโ€™ve asked him to. For the right price.

โ€œThe girlโ€™s name is Olivia Reynolds,โ€ I say. โ€œShe goes to Liamโ€™s school. Same arrangement as last time. Okay?โ€

Frank is quiet, hopefully scribbling down the information. โ€œOlivia Reynolds. Spelled how it sounds?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œGot it.โ€

โ€œSame thing as last time. Okay?โ€

โ€œOkay, you got it.โ€ Thereโ€™s shuffling on the other line. โ€œI never seen a woman so eager to cock block her kid. Sometimes I think heโ€™s going to be discussing this in therapy someday.โ€

My fingers tighten around the phone until my fingertips tingle. Frank has done this for me many times, and this is the first time he felt the need to comment. โ€œIf you donโ€™t want to do it, Iโ€™ll get somebody else.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œBecause if you wonโ€™t do it, tell me now.โ€ โ€œShit, Erika. Relax. I was just kidding around.โ€ My shoulders relax. โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œOne more thing,โ€ Frank says. โ€œMy prices went up.โ€ โ€œHow much?โ€

He quotes a number nearly twice as much as what I paid last time. My chest tightens. He knows it was an empty threat when I said I would get somebody else. He knows Iโ€™m not going to get somebody else. I need him. โ€œFine.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nice working with you, as always, Erika.โ€

Just do your job, you piece of shit.ย I grit my teeth, angry I canโ€™t say the words that are going through my head. But heโ€™s going to do what I need him to do. Heโ€™s going to help me save my son from himself.
