Chapter no 6

The Perfect Son

Olivia

Thanks to Liam Cass, Iโ€™m failing math class.

No, I probably wonโ€™t fail, but things arenโ€™t looking good for me. Iโ€™m good at mathโ€”Iโ€™ve always gotten Aโ€™s, if not an A+. But this semester, Iโ€™ll be lucky to swing a C. And itโ€™s all because of Liam. Itโ€™s because from the moment I step into the classroom at ten-thirty to when the bell rings forty minutes later, all I can focus on is the boy sitting in front of me.

Iโ€™ve never been boy crazy. I canโ€™t say the same for my best friend Madison, who thinks about boys nonstop. Madison hasย definitelyย failed classes before because of a cute guy sitting in front of her. She has blown off studying for tests to hang out with the boys she liked. Itโ€™s sort of herย thing. And I always made fun of her. Like, how could you prioritize aย boyย over your education? I mean, boys my age are all pretty idiotic and not even that attractiveโ€”they mostly have greasy faces and scraggly little beards.

I want to get into a good collegeโ€”thatโ€™s my priority. How could you jeopardize your entire future for a cute guy? Thatโ€™sย soย lame.

Then on the first day of school this year, Liam sat down in front of me in math class, turned his head to flash me a smile, and I was gone. He didnโ€™t have a greasy face or patchy facial hairโ€”he wasย gorgeous. I hate myself for it, but I canโ€™t help ogling him. Every time he smiles at me, my heart speeds up. He has aย greatย smile. Andย reallyย beautiful brown eyes. His eyes are like creamy, endless pools of milk chocolate. I could write bad poetry about this guy. In another month, Iโ€™ll be etching our initials in a heart scratched into the wood of my deskโ€”thatโ€™s how bad it is.

We had a test a few days ago, and it was a bona fide disaster. I canโ€™t focus when Iโ€™m studying, because the second I crack open the textbook and see sines and cosines, my mind goes to Liam. And of course, I couldnโ€™t focus when I was actuallyย takingย the testโ€”not with him sitting right in front of me. I passed by the skin of my teethโ€”a seventy-two. Liam, who obviously isnโ€™t having any problem at all focusing with little old me behind him, got a ninety-eight.

Iโ€™ve got to stop thinking about this boy. Heโ€™s just a boy. My education is much more important. Iโ€™ve got to focus.

Focus, Olivia.

Except when Liam comes into the classroom today, heโ€™s not wearing his usual jeans and a T-shirt. Heโ€™s dressed in nice khaki slacks and a dress shirt. And a tie. Oh my God, heโ€™s wearing aย tie. Usually, heโ€™s cute, but in dress clothes, heโ€™s upped his game. Itโ€™s like a sneak peek into how handsome heโ€™ll look when heโ€™s an adult. Against my will, my stomach starts doing cartwheels.

Focus, Olivia!

As Liam slides into his seat in front of me, he flashes me that grin that makes my legs weak. โ€œHey,โ€ he says.

โ€œHey,โ€ I say back. I search my brain, trying to think of something clever or funny to say. I spend most of math class trying to do that. โ€œYouโ€™re all dressed up.โ€

Good one, Olivia.

โ€œWe have a debate today,โ€ he explains. โ€œItโ€™s sort of a big deal. Weโ€™re competing against another school.โ€

โ€œWow. Are you nervous?โ€

โ€œA little.โ€ He laughs, although thereโ€™s a bit of a tremor in his voice that makes me think heโ€™s more nervous than he lets on. โ€œIf we win, we get to go to the state competition up in Albany. Thatโ€™s pretty cool.โ€

โ€œWhat do you do during a debate anyway?โ€

He scratches at his dark brown hair. โ€œArgue, mostly. Itโ€™s sort of fun.โ€ He raises his eyebrows at me. โ€œDo you, umโ€ฆ do you want to come watch?โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ I say in an embarrassingly squeaky voice.

Oh my God, that wasย suchย a stupid thing to say.ย Obviouslyย heโ€™s inviting me. Who else would he be inviting?

And what does thisย mean?

โ€œUhโ€ฆโ€ His smile slips slightly. โ€œI mean, if you want. Itโ€™d probably be pretty boring for you. You probably donโ€™t want to go.โ€

Oh no, heโ€™s taking it back. โ€œNo, it sounds like it could be fun. I donโ€™t have anything else Iโ€™m doing.โ€

Thatโ€™s an outright lie. Iโ€™m supposed to be at chorus practice after school today. But the truth is, Iโ€™ve soured on chorus since I didnโ€™t get the

last two solos I tried out for. And even if I had, I canโ€™t say no to Liam. This is the first time heโ€™s ever invited me somewhere.

His eyes light up. โ€œThat would be great. I mean, if you can come. But if something else comes up, thatโ€™s cool too. No big deal.โ€

I canโ€™t believe it. He actually seems really happy that Iโ€™m coming. Oh God, thereโ€™s noย wayย Iโ€™m going to be able to focus in class now. Iโ€™m going to get a terrible grade in math this semester. And the scariest part is, at this moment, I couldnโ€™t care less.
