Chapter no 4

The Perfect Son

Transcript of police interview with 3haron Anderson:

โ€œCan you tell me how you know Liam Cass?โ€

โ€œHe attended kindergarten at the school where I work as principal.โ€ โ€œFor how long did he attend?โ€

โ€œAbout four months.โ€

โ€œAnd this was eleven years ago?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s correct.โ€

โ€œSo you still remember a child who attended your school for four months over a decade ago?โ€

โ€œYes. I remember Liam. Very well.โ€ โ€œAnd what was your impression of him?โ€

โ€œAt first? He seemed like a great kid. Real cute. Smartโ€”certainly the smartest kid in the grade. I remember he got up during assembly and gave this long speech he memorized. I couldnโ€™t believe a kindergartner could remember all that. I was impressed.โ€

โ€œHow come he only attended the school for four months? Isnโ€™t the school year nine months long?โ€

โ€œLiam wasโ€ฆ expelled.โ€

โ€œA kindergartner was expelled?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s unusual. But the circumstances called for it.โ€ โ€œI see. And why was that?โ€

โ€œThere was an incident.โ€

โ€œCan you describe the incident to me?โ€ โ€œYesโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWill you please describe the incident, Mrs. Anderson?โ€ โ€œIt wasโ€ฆ there was a girlโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYesโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œWell, she and Liam were friends. They often played together at recess, or so his teacher told me later. And then one day during recess, the girlโ€ฆ disappeared.โ€

โ€œI see. And did they find her?โ€

โ€œYes. They did. And she wasโ€ฆ fine.โ€ โ€œWhere did they find her?โ€

โ€œDoes this have to do with that girl from the high school? The one whoโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraid we canโ€™t discuss it at this time.โ€

โ€œYes. Yes, of course. But do you think Liam is the one whoโ€ฆ?โ€ โ€œOnce again, Mrs. Anderson, this is not something I can discuss.โ€ โ€œOf course. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œNow can you tell me where they found this girl?โ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆ the story I was told is that Liam and the little girl were playing janitor. They sneaked away and went to the custodial closet during recess. It seems she was quite infatuated with Liam and he talked her into it.โ€

โ€œAnd what happened in the custodial closet?โ€

โ€œThey found a roll of duct tape. And they were playing with it.โ€ โ€œHow were they playing with it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMrs. Anderson?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. It was justโ€ฆ so shocking. I still canโ€™t get over it. That a kindergartner wouldโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWould what?โ€

โ€œHe convinced her to let him bind her wrists with the duct tape. Then he put tape over her mouth. And thenโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYesโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œWell, weโ€™re not sure what he did next. The one thing we know for sure is he locked her in the closet and walked away. And even when she was noticed to be missing and teachers were looking for her, he didnโ€™t tell anyone where she was. It was several hours later when we finally found her

โ€”she was bound on the floor of the closet and refused to speak to anyone. For days, actually.โ€

โ€œWhat doย youย think he did?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. He was just a little boy. Itโ€™s hard to imagine he could have done anything that bad, but the look in that girlโ€™s eyes when we found herโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI see.โ€

โ€œOf course, her parents were hysterical. And given everything that happened, we had no choice but to expel Liam from the school.โ€

โ€œWhen you confronted him about what he did, how did he react?โ€

โ€œHe apologized. Of course he did. He claimed it was all just a fun game and she had agreed to it. He even cried. Butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut what?โ€

โ€œBut I never believed him. Even when he was sobbing in my office, it seemed incredibly fake. I donโ€™t think he was sorry at all. Not even a little bit. The only thing I think he was sorry about was that we found her.โ€
