Iโd had to cancel on dinner with Alexis. I couldnโt explain to her why I was suddenly honor bound to be somewhere else tonight, so I just told her the
second truth. I had a date with a hot guy. She was more than happy to go home early on those grounds. Plus I think she missed Daniel.
I ran home after work and got ready. Alexis had done Bennyโs dialysis for me before she left, which was perfect because I was on a tight turnaround. I picked a cute gray top with some jeans. Did my hair and makeup, and Jacob picked me up in a black F-150 at exactly eight oโclock.
I was going to doย anythingย he needed to make this fake-girlfriend thing work. I was about to put on an Oscar-worthy performance the likes of which Hollywood has never seen. I was so committed I would tattoo his name across my boob. Pose for fake engagement photos if he wanted them. Hell, Iโd fake a damn wedding.
I saw him arrive in the Ring Doorbell, so when Jacob came up the walkway to get me, I was already coming out. I didnโt want to invite him in to see the time capsule I currently lived in.
โHey,โ I said, squeezing out the crack in the door and closing the screen behind me.
โHey. Ready to go?โ
He was wearing jeans and a thin black V-neck sweater with the sleeves rolled up. Very handsome.
โI brought a bottle of wine,โ I said, holding up a chardonnay.
โTheyโll love that,โ he said, slipping his hands in his pockets. He looked a little nervous. His jaw was tight.
I peered around him at his truck. Lieutenant Dan had his head out the open back window.
โYou brought your dog!โ
Jacob looked over his shoulder. โYeah. I take him everywhere.โ
I jogged down the walkway to pet him with Jacob following behind me. โHeโs so cute,โ I said, ruffling the dogโs head. He wagged his tail and
made an excited puppy noise. โI didnโt really take you for a truck guy,โ I said, scratching Lieutenant Danโs ear.
Jacob was smiling a little, but it didnโt reach his eyes. โIโm fixing up the cabin. I needed the bed.โ
He looked at his watch. โWe should get going. I think weโre going to be the last ones there.โ
โOkay.โ
He opened my door for me and then went around to the driverโs side and got in.
โSo whereโs your parentsโ house?โ I asked, getting buckled. โEdina,โ he said, firing up the engine.
I nodded. โHmmm. Fancy.โ Probably a nice house. Not like whereย I
lived.
The outside of my house was just as ugly and dilapidated as the inside. The lawn was all crabgrass and cracked walkway and old paint. I was sort of glad Jacob didnโt say anything about it.
โWhere do your parents live?โ he asked, making a left out of my neighborhood.
โMy mom lives in Arizona with her new husband, Gil. I donโt have a relationship with my dad. This is good,โ I said. โAsk me more questions.
We should try to know as much about each other as we can before we get there.โ
โGood idea.โ
โSo how did we meet?โ I said. โTheyโll probably ask us.โ
โI told them I moved hospitals to be closer to my girlfriend. So that means we had to have met a few months ago and we couldnโt have met at Royaume.โ
โOkay. Why donโt we say that Benny came into your ER at Memorial West and thatโs how we met.โ
He nodded. โI like that. But letโs not say which ER so technically itโs the real story. I think we should try and stick to the truth as much as we can. Keep things as simple as possible.โ
โI agree. Do they know youโre donating a kidney?โ I asked, looking over at him.
He shook his head. โI wasnโt going to tell them. But only because I didnโt want it to get back to you. My mom is friends with Jessica. And Zander. And Gibson.โ
โAre you going to tell them now?โ
He shrugged. โI guess I could,โ he said, getting on the freeway. โNo reason to hide it from them at this point. Hey, are you allergic to nuts?โ he asked.
โNo. How about you? Any food allergies? Stuff you donโt like?โ
โI hate well-done eggs. Canโt stand the smell. And I donโt like dill. Other than that, there isnโt much I wonโt try. What about you?โ
โI think yogurt is gross. And cantaloupe makes my throat itch.โ
โNo yogurt, no cantaloupe.โ He glanced at me. โSo what time do I need to have you back? Are you doing Bennyโs dialysis?โ
โMy best friend did it for me before she left.โ I smiled. โBenny was gone before I got home. Heโs out with friends celebrating. He shaved and everything. There was beard hair all over the sink. I didnโt think Iโd ever be so excited to have to clean that shit up again.โ
โHe doesnโt clean up his own beard hair?โ he asked, changing lanes.
โDoes any man? I mean, you guysย thinkย you do. You do the wet-toilet- paper wipe-down thing and call it a day.โ
โI actuallyย doย clean up my beard hair,โ he said.
โUh-huh. Iโll believe it when I see it. Which reminds me, whatโs your house like? I should probably know.โ
โSmall. One-bedroom and a room for plants.โ โForย plants?โ
โI like plants,โ he said. โDo you like plants?โ
โI mean, yeah. As long as itโs not me taking care of them. Iโve killed a cactus.โ
โDid you overwater it?โ
โI didnโt water it at all. I forgot it existed. My kitchen windowsill is more uninhabitable than a desert, apparently.โ
He looked amused.
We drove for a few more minutes and pulled into a nice neighborhood. Lieutenant Dan got up and put his face between us to look out the windshield like he knew where he was.
โDo you come to your parentsโ house a lot?โ I asked, petting the dog. โWeโre a close family. I go there, they come over.โ
He rubbed his forehead and I eyed him. โAre you okay?โ
He let out a breath. โJust getting a little headache. Grinding my teeth.โ
Then he did a sudden double take out the windshield. He pulled the truck over immediately and put it in park.
โWhatโs up?โ I asked.
โI have to get something.โ He pulled some rubber gloves and a trash bag from the glove box.
โUhโฆwhat do you have to get?โ I asked, looking around the street heโd stopped on. It was residential. Nothing of note.
โIโll be right back.โ
He got out, and I turned to watch him come around the rear of the truck. I stared perplexed as he crouched and started looking at a raccoon carcass in the gutter. He was lifting the arms and turning it over. Then he put it into his trash bag.
I rolled down my window. โUh, they have people who take care of that?โ โItโs fresh, itโs a good one,โ he called.
โOkay? And thatโs importantย why?โ
He tossed it in the bed of the truck and came back around to the driverโs side and got back in, peeling off his gloves. โSorry. I needed to get that for my dad.โ
I stared at him. โYou needed to bring your dad an unalive raccoon,โ I deadpanned.
He put on his seat belt. โMy dadโs a taxidermist. Heโs been looking for a good raccoon to mount.โ
I blinked at him. โAnd you couldnโt have led with that so I wasnโt afraid I was on a drive with a serial killer?โ
He glanced at me and just now seemed to notice the look on my face. โIโm sorry. That was weird.โ He looked a little embarrassed. โI should have explained it before I got out. Sorry. I justโฆIโm nervous and when Iโm nervous IโฆI sometimes miss steps.โ
He had his hat-in-hand, puppy-dog look again. That vulnerable expression like heโd done something wrong.
I felt my face soften. โDonโt be nervous. Weโve got this. Itโs going to be fine.โ
He looked at me like he didnโt believe me.
โIt will. And donโt worry about the raccoon thing. To be honest, this isnโt even the creepiest thing Iโve ever had happen on a date. Youโre all good.โ
He laughed despite himself. Then he went a little serious again and looked away from me. โI donโt want you to think that I do this often.โ
โRoadkill?โ
He came back to me. โNo. Lie to my family.โ
I pivoted in my seat to look at him straight on. โJacob, you doย notย need to tell me what kind of person you are. I know.โ
He gazed at me a long moment. That quiet, thoughtful look he gave me sometimes, and I realized that behind that expression was probably the wheels of his brain, working overtime. Trying to assess the situation, worrying, overthinking like I knew Benny always did. His anxiety pinging around. A clawing internal panic nobody else could see.
Butย Iย could see it. Because Iโd seen it in my brother his whole life.
I think thatโs why Bennyโs diagnosis was so hard on my brother. He wasnโt just living what was happening. He was living whatย mightย happen. An infinite number of what-ifs, fueled by his anxiety, each one experienced like they were going on simultaneously, eating away at him, terrifying him, tormenting him. And once he started down that path, it was so hard to stop the progression. It was a self-perpetuating cycle of emotional destruction.
One that Jacobโs selfless gesture had knocked off its trajectory.
Jacob had given Benny a reason to stop the inside screaming and look at just one way forward instead of all the possible worst-case scenarios his brain could conjure. Heโd given himย hope. And in doing that, he gave his restless mind peace.
And I could see, in this one quiet moment in this truck, that the screaming was going on inside of Jacob. He didnโt have to say a word for me to know it. He was worried what was going to happen with his family today. He was worried what I thought of him. He was dealing with the fact that his ex was marrying his brother, and he was probably afraid weโd get caught in this lie.
I decided right then and there that my job was going to be to quiet it all down. I would be a buffer. An emotional support person. I would throw myself over him like a bulletproof vest. Wrap him up in my protection.
โLook, everything is going to be okay,โ I said. โWeโre ready. My cheekbones are contoured. Weโve got wine and the dead thingโฆโ
The corner of his lip quirked up the tiniest bit.
โWeโre going to smile, and eat, nobody is going to know what weโre doing, and itโs going to beย fine. Trust me.โ
He let out a long breath through his nose. โOkay.โ
This time he seemed to believe it. Or at least he appeared toย wantย to believe it.
He drove us another few blocks, and we pulled up in front of a nice two- story house with half a dozen cars parked in the driveway. He sat staring up at the home through the windshield.
โItโs going to be chaos in there,โ he said almost to himself. โOkay. Iโm good in chaos.โ
โIโm not,โ he mumbled.
I cocked my head at him. โDo you want to play a game?โ He arched an eyebrow. โA game?โ
โYeah. I think youโll like it. I used to play it with Benny when weโd go to stuff like this.โ
โOkayโฆโ
โI give you a catchphrase. And you have to work it into a conversation. The second you do, youโre allowed a time-out from peopling. We go sit on the stairs with the dog or something.โ
He eyed me. โA catchphrase? Like what?โ
I twisted my lips and looked sideways. โLiiiike, โNot on my watch,โโ I said in a fake British accent.
He smiled a little.
โBenny liked it because it gave him a goal and it forced him to talk to people.โ
He seemed thoughtful. โAll right. Iโll try it.โ
โSweet!โ I got unbuckled. โAny last-minute tips?โ
โYeah, donโt give Grandpa any cigarettes, no matter what he says. Heโs very convincing. And do not under any circumstances bring up sex toys to my mom. You will never escape the conversation. No one will be able to save you.โ
โUh, I somehow donโt think sex toys are going to come up while Iโm talking to your mom.โ
โI think youโd be surprised how easily she works it in,โ he muttered. He put his shoulder to the door and got out to get Lieutenant Dan.
I grabbed my purse and met him around the front of the truck. โShould we hold hands?โ I asked, my voice low. โLike, coming up the walkway? In case someoneโs looking out the window or thereโs a Ring Doorbell or something?โ
He shook his head. โI donโt think you should have to touch me as part of this deal. I think we can pull this off without it.โ
โI donโt mind it.โ
He shook his head. โI think weโll be all right.โ
When we got to the front door, he didnโt knock. It was unlocked and he let us in. It was like stepping into a Dave & Busterโs. Music, laughing, kids screaming, a video game turned up too loud, a blender running. The warm smell of cooking food.
A parrot flew through the vestibule and I ducked. โWhoa!โ
It landed on top of the coatrack and squawked, โMOTHERFUCKER!โ at the top of its lungs.
โSorry,โ Jacob said, already looking flustered. โThatโs Jafar.โ
Then two children darted to us from out of nowhere. โUncle JJ!โ they called in unison.
Jacob smiled and crouched to catch them in a bear hug and hoist them up. The kids wrapped their arms around Jacobโs neck. โWhat socks?โ
Jacob smiled, his honey eyes creasing at the corners. โFrogs, like you said.โ
โYay!โ
He turned so they could see me. โCarter, Katrina, this is Briana.โ The little boy looked over at me. โHello.โ
I smiled. โHi.โ
The little girl peered at me curiously. โYouโre pretty.โ โThank you,โ I said. โI like your necklace.โ
She didnโt reply. They wiggled out of Jacobโs arms like theyโd exchanged some unspoken agreement to take off. They hit the floor and were gone, yelling like town criers that Uncle JJ was here with some girl with long hair.
Jacob looked at me. โThose are Jewel and Gwenโs twins. And thatโs going to be the easiest introduction of the night.โ
โThe animal-socks thing isย veryย cute,โ I said.
โSometimes they canโt agree, and I have to wear two different ones.โ
I laughed.
Then adults started streaming into the vestibule. They came down the hallway in a wave of humanity and fanned out around me, all smiles and excited greetings.
I could practically feel Jacobโs body tense next to me, and I had a knee- jerk urge to reach over and squeeze his hand to let him know I was okay, but I didnโt get the chance because they edged him out to get close to me. I was completely surrounded. A cat started rubbing on my legs, the twins skipped around the throng, and Jafar squawked obscenities from the coatrack as people started shaking my hand, introducing themselves faster than I could keep up.
A young, pretty girl named Jane in a pink sundress. Jewel, who Iโd already met; her wife, Gwen, a blue-haired Asian woman with a nose ring. Jill, a petite woman with Jacobโs auburn hair in capri pants and a conservative white blouse, and her burly husband, Walter, a Black man wearing a T-shirt for a pit-bull rescue. An old man on oxygen in an electric wheelchair rolled in and bumped into my leg and then sat there glaring up at me in silence. Someone introduced him as Grandpa. He ignored me when I said hello.
The man who I assumed was Jacobโs dad hovered behind the crowd like he was waiting for the chaos to settle before he said hi. And then an older woman in a flowing paisley top with dangling earrings and arms full of jingling bell bracelets parted the crowd and came right in for a hug.
Iโd say that all of this would be overwhelming, except that when Mom took us back to El Salvador to visit, I did this exact thing times a hundred at every single family gathering. It took a full hour just to walk around and say hi to all my cousins and their families. This was nothing. And the rules were universal and simple: You smiled, acknowledged everyone, and asked
how you could help with whatever they were doing. I knew how to handle this and was completely relaxed. But a glance at Jacob told me he was on the verge of a panic attack on my behalf. I gave him a reassuring smile over his momโs shoulder before she pulled away.
โIโm Joy,โ the woman said, grinning warmly at me. She looked a little familiar, but I couldnโt place it. Maybe she just looked like Jacob? โItโs such a pleasure to meet you,โ she said.
I smiled. โYou too.โ
The older man made his move as the rest of the crowd started to disperse back into the house. He came up next to his wife. โIโm Greg, Jacobโs dad. So pleased to have you.โ
Jacob looked a lot like his dad. They sort of had the same mellow energy.
I nodded to Jacob, who had stepped in to stand next to me now that there was room. โWe picked up a raccoon for you on the way over,โ I said.
Greg lit up. โYou did?โ
โItโs in the truck,โ Jacob said.
His dad rubbed his hands together. โWell, letโs get it.โ
Greg edged past me and left out the front door with Jacob, leaving me with Grandpa, the dog, and Joy.
A timer went off somewhere.
Joy looked toward the sound. โOh, I need to go pull that.โ She gestured for me to follow. โCome on, weโll get you a drink,โ she said, already heading down the hall with Lieutenant Dan at her heels.
I snapped my fingers. โShoot,โ I said, remembering. โWe left the wine in Jacobโs truck. Let me run and grab that real quick.โ
โOkay. Kitchenโs down this hallway,โ she called, still walking. Then she disappeared around a doorway and I was alone with the old man.
I smiled at him and he glared at me. โGive me a cigarette or Iโll tell Jacob youโre hittinโ on me. You got five minutes.โ
I choked on a laugh. โWhat?โ
โOne cigarette and you roll me out to the gazebo and cover for me.โ I shook my head at him. โSir, you are onย oxygen.โ
โWhat the hell is it to you? Iโm gonna kick the bucket anyway! Iโm half dead already. One cigarette. If you get me a whole pack, Iโll give you my Purple Heart.โ
I had to fight to keep my face straight. โIโm afraid I canโt do that for you.โ
He narrowed his watery eyes.
Just then Jacob let himself back into the vestibule holding the wine from the truck. His dad wasnโt with him. Grandpa jabbed a finger at me. โSheโs hittinโ on me!โ
Jacob paused, looking back and forth between us.
โItโs true,โ I said. โHeโs handsome. I canโt help myself.โ
The old man scowled. He made a little fake lunge at me with his chair. Then he turned, pinning me with an impressive nonblinking glare, and left the room.
I turned to my fake date and smiled. This was seriouslyย soย much fun. Jacob set the wine down on the bench by the door, looking exhausted.
โIโm sorry.โ
I laughed. โFor what?โ
โThat?โ He nodded in the direction Grandpa had wheeled off in. โWho says heโs lying?โ
He let out a snort.
โI told you it was going to be a lot,โ he said.
โJacob, I have twenty-two first cousins in El Salvador,โ I said, taking off my shoes and setting them next to everyone elseโs. โThis isย nothing. You should just relax.โ
I nodded to the way he came. โYou should go do stuff with your dad or something. Skin your dead raccoon. Iโll hang out with your mom in the kitchen.โ
He shook his head. โNo. I donโt want to leave you alone with them.โ โWhatโs gonna happen?โ
He slipped his hands into his pockets and peered at me wordlessly, and I imagined those wheels turning again, running through every scenario that could possibly end in disaster.
โOkay,โ I said. โThen come with me. But chill out. Iโm having a good time.โ
He clearly didnโt believe me.
I sighed. I was glad Iโd made tonight work because if this was too much, the next one with the brother and the ex would have been a disaster.
This place was an introvertโs nightmare for sure. Loud, overcrowded. Lots of social expectations crammed into a tiny window of time coupled with the stress of introducing a new person to his family. The worry that we wouldnโt pull off this charade.
The next time he wouldnโt have that pressure because we will have gotten it out of the way. Heโd still have to deal with all the rest of it, but at least the two of us would have worked out the kinks of this arrangement by then.
I nodded to the house. โCome on. Give me a tour.โ
I suggested this on purpose to give him a chance to decompress before we joined the group again. I could tell immediately it was the right thing. He let out a breath that sounded relieved and nodded for me to follow him.
The house was enormous. I got the feeling it was the family hub. It was built for entertaining. The basement had a full bar and so did the pool. There was a water slide and a pool house with a nice outdoor BBQ. They had a movie room and a very comfy, very large living room where the twins were playing on a PlayStation. A big dining room with a table that seated twenty and lots of guest rooms.
โDid you ever live here?โ I asked as we strolled past the open door of a guest room strewn with the twinsโ toys.
โI grew up here.โ
โOhhhh,โ I said, turning to smile at him. โShow me your room.โ โItโs not the same as when I was a kid. Dad uses it now,โ he said. โI still want to see it.โ
I stopped at a bookshelf off the hallway. There were framed photos tucked in with the booksโa picture of Jacob in eighth grade. His hair stuck up every which way and he had braces and an overbite.
Damn. Puberty hit this man like aย bus. The glow up was unreal.
โOh, look at that,โ I said, spotting a book I knew. โLove Shows Up.ย I read this.โ I tapped the spine.
โMom wrote that.โ I froze.ย โWhat?โ
โSheโs a couples counselor and sex therapist. Bestselling author. She has a PhD in clinical sexology. Sheโs also a board-certified OB-GYN.โ
I turned slowly to stare at him in horror. Then I hustled him into the nearest room and closed the door behind us.
โPlease tell me youโre kidding,โ I whispered. He blinked at me in confusion.
โYour mom is Dr. J. Maddox? A world-renowned relationship expert? Are you serious, Jacob? You didnโt feel like this was something you should
have mentioned?โ
He looked positively baffled.
I shook my head at him. โIt is literally herย jobย to call bullshit on us.โ โI told her we were newโโ
โJacob, I donโt even know what your penis looks like.โ โWell, Iโm not showing it to youโโ
โIโm not asking! Iโm making a point!โ
I put a hand to my chest. โI thought I was gonna get here and your dad was going to call me Brenda or Bianca the whole time and theyโd make small talk with me and then Iโd go home and weโd have three more weeks before the engagement party to perfect our act. And instead weโre in a two- hour couples-counseling consultation with a bestsellingย sexย expert. Sheโs going to take one look at me and know Iโve never seen you naked. Sheโs gonna see it all over my face!โ I looked at him bleakly.
He seemed to mull this over. โMaybe we havenโt had sex yet. Maybe weโre taking it slow.โ
I shook my head. โNo. No way. Weโveย definitelyย had sex. You supposedly moved to Royaume to be closer to me and we havenโt even slept together yet? How is that in any way believable? The whole point is to make them think weโre super into each other. How are you going to be over Amy if youโre not having hot, kinky sex with your new girlfriend?!โ
He started smiling. โThis isnโt funny!โ โItโs a little funny.โ
โNo! And what is this room?!โ I asked, throwing my arms out.
A thousand marble eyes stared out at me. It was full of taxidermy.
FULL. And it wasย weird.
A squirrel in a cowboy hat and chaps riding a turtle. A white mouse dressed in a wizard robe and glasses reading a book, a rabbit with antlers, a ferret in a little bathtub scrubbing his back with a loofa. A dead coyote dressed like Flo from the Progressive commercials. She had the bouffant haircut and red lipstick and everything. It was pretty hilarious, but still.
โThis is my old room. This is Dadโs stuff,โ Jacob said. โItโs where he keeps his novelty pieces.โ
I bounced back to the problem at hand. โThis is a catastrophe, Jacob,โ I whispered. โWhat if your mom sends me a friend request on Instagram? Thereโs not one picture of us together. It literally looks like I didnโt exist until today.โ I shook my head. โWe just walked in here like renegades. I donโt know enough about you to pull this off. I donโt even know how old you are. Do you sleep with the fan on? How do you take your coffee? Do you snore?โ
โIโm thirty-five. I sleep with the fan,โ he said calmly. โDecaf when my anxiety is high, cream and sugar, and not that I am aware.โ
I shook my head at the gorgeous, oblivious man standing in front of me, who was totally not getting the gravity of this situation. โYou said your mom knows Jessica?โ I asked.
โYes. And Zander and Gibson.โ
โWeโre going to have to be together in front of everyone. Weโre going to have to maintain that weโre dating at work. Iโll have to tell Benny. Weโll need to disclose the relationship to HR.โ
His face fell.
โItโs fine, Iโm okay with it,โ I said. โItโs just bigger than I thought.โ Hopefully Jessica didnโt talk to Joy too much and the jump from I Hate
Him to Iโm in Love with Him didnโt come up.
โWeโre going to have to step up our game, Jacob. Big time. In your momโs book she said intimacy is in the small things,โ I whispered. โItโs putting a hand on my lower back when we walk into a room or facing in my direction when weโre together. Youโre going to have to touch me. You have to do it on purpose, but it has to look like youโre not even thinking about it, like touching me is just natural for you because you like it. And Iโm going to have to do the same thing.โ
He put his hands in his pockets. โOkayโฆโ
โWeโre going to need to spend a lot more time together,โ I whispered. โIf your mom doesnโt call bullshit by the end of the night, Amy will in three weeks if we donโt get good at this. Iโm going to need to see your house. Youโre going to need to seeโฆmine.โ I gulped on the last word. โYou have to have lunch with me every day.โ
I thought I saw the corner of his lip twitch.
โMaybe you should come up to the cabin,โ he suggested. โYES.ย Allย the things.โ
I let out a slow breath. โGod. No wonder you warned me about sex toys.โ Though I might actually want to talk to her about thatโฆ
Iโd read Joyโs book. Twice. It was good. She knew her stuff. It was also the book that made me realize how little Iโd been getting from Nick. How wrong things had been for so long. Iโd thought it was me. I was trying to fix something when I didnโt know where the break was.
And then Iโd found out.
โWe should go back out there,โ I said, chewing on my lip. Great. Nowย Iย was nervous. We both were. Perfect.
โIโm sorry. I donโt know why I didnโt think of it,โ he said forlornly.
I waved him off, trying not to freak out over the fact that I was in Dr. J. Maddoxโs house. Leave it to a man to completely miss the broad strokes.
He stood there for an awkward moment like he didnโt know what to do now. Then he put out a hand, offering it to me like he felt sorry that I had to take it.
I breathed a sigh through my nose at his apologetic expression. I didnโt want him to feel bad about this situation. I would have agreed to help him even if Iโd known about his mom. Telling everyone I knew that I had a boyfriend was just an unexpected pivot. I hadnโt been ready for how far this performance needed to stretch. And Iโd meant what Iโd said outside: I didnโt mind the touching part, that wasnโt an issue for me at all.
I gave him a reassuring smile. โItโs going to be fine, Jacob. Weโll work it out.โ
I slipped my hand into his waiting one and was surprised when I got the slightest flutter in my stomach at the contact.
It wasnโt the first time Iโd touched him. Iโd hugged him earlier in the supply closet, but this felt intimate, even though it was just for show. I felt a tiny blush creep up my neck.
I cleared my throat. โNo kissing on the lips,โ I whispered. โNo kissing,โ he agreed.
Then my โboyfriendโ led me out.
