My cell was vibrating.
The sun was cracking through the curtains. It took me a moment to realize where I was. Floral wallpaper. A four-poster bed. Alexis asleep next to me.
Iโd come to Grant House.
I pulled out my phone and squinted at the screen. It was eight-thirty in the morning, and Jacob was calling.
I swiped to answer. โHello?โ I whispered. โHi. Good morning.โ
I rubbed my eyes. โGood morning.โ Alexis started to stir.
โI was wondering if youโd like to go to breakfast,โ he said.
Huh?
Thatย was a little unexpected. I thought he would feel all weird for a few days. Retreat into isolation like introverts do when theyโve had an unpleasant encounter and that I would have to make first contact.
โIโm not home,โ I said. โOh. Where are you?โ
Alexis sat up and yawned into the back of her hand.
โIโm in Wakan,โ I said, making an exaggerated pointing motion to the phone and mouthing the wordย JACOBย to let my best friend know who it was. โIโm here for the next few days.โ
โOh,โ he said again. And then, โCan I come?โ I blinked. โYou want toโฆcome?ย Here?โ
โYeah. If itโs okay.โ
Alexis started nodding vigorously.
โButโฆmy friends are strangers,โ I said, like heโd forgotten who he was. โYou only like meeting people youโve already met.โ
โThatโs okay. I donโt mind.โ What in the world? โIโฆsure?โ
โOkay. Can I bring my dog? If not, Iโll leave him with Jewel.โ
I pulled the phone away from my mouth. โCan he bring his dog?โ I whispered.
Alexis nodded.
โYeah, thatโs fine, he can come,โ I said.
โGreat. Text me the address. Iโll leave in thirty minutes.โ And then we hung up.
I turned and stared at Alexis. โHeโs coming,โ I said in disbelief. She grinned. โI know.โ
โWhyย is he coming? He doesnโt like unfamiliar things. Or places. Or people. Or changes to his plans.โ
โNo. But he definitely likesย you.โ She beamed.
I just sat there, shaking my head. This whole thing was baffling, so out of character. Was he trying to show me there were no hard feelings for last night? He could have shown me he was over it with a text. He didnโt have to drive all the way to Wakan.
Maybe he was so distraught over what happened with Amy that he needed a distraction and he didnโt care what it was.
That was probably it. I might not be โthe oneโ for him, but we definitely had a good time together.
No matter what the reason, this was an act of desperation. I felt a little deflated over the thought that him coming was just an extension of the same impulse that made him ask me out last night.
I sighed. โI have to go take a picture of the driveway,โ I mumbled, getting up.
โThe driveway?โ she asked.
โHe needs to know where to park. Itโs a thing.โ
