Chapter no 20 – Calvin

You Shouldn't Have Come Here

e ice-cold water slithered down my hot skin but it was doing little to cool me o . It was like the heat was radiating from my insides. I screwed up again. Grace practically gave me an opening, but something stopped me. I think itโ€™s the way sheโ€™d look at me. One moment, it was like she was falling for me, and the next, it was as though she was scared of me. Maybe she felt both ways. I didnโ€™t know why. I hadnโ€™t done anything to make her fear me.

I shut the water o and looked out the ill-placed window in the shower. Apparently, when this house was built, privacy was something that people didnโ€™t care too much about. Grace walked by in a tiny red bikini, carrying a towel and a book. She didnโ€™t notice me watching her. Every part of her was perfection, even the bruise on her lower back. Her bottoms didnโ€™t fully cover her backside. Her top looked as though it was made out of just a few pieces of string. Girls โ€™round here didnโ€™t wear things like that. I watched her until she disappeared around the house, and then I turned the shower back on, letting the cold water run over my skin again. It was either that or Iโ€™d have to rub Grace out of me.

Pulling open the curtain, I stepped out of the tub and dried myself o .ย e roar of a truck and a loud exhaust made me quicken my pace. I knew exactly who it was. I threw on clothes and jogged out of the house before my brother was able to introduce himself to Grace.

He was always too friendly too quickly because he wanted everyone to like

him. I think growing up in my shadow made him that way. People were

immediately drawn to me, but they werenโ€™t the same with Joe. Even our father was more drawn to me than him. Joe had done everything to try to get Dad to love him, to be proud of himโ€”thatโ€™s why he knew about xing cars, and I didnโ€™t. Joe learned it all from Dad, thinking it would make them grow close, be a bond between them. But Dad was like a thorn. You got too close, you got pricked. What hurt my brother most was our parents leaving the ranch to me. While I up and left for years, he stayed and worked every day on it. I knew he resented me for it.

Joe hopped out of his lifted Dodge Ram just as I got outside. I told him not

to have it lifted because it made him look like a douche. He spent his money on silly things as though theyโ€™d make him happy.ย ey never did. As long as I was alive, I didnโ€™t think heโ€™d ever be happy.

โ€œWhatโ€™s up, bro?โ€ Joe called out.

He pu ed out his chest and raised his shoulders as he walked toward me. We shook hands and half hugged, punctuating it with rm pats on the back. Joe was shorter, only around ve foot ten, but he was muscular. He worked hard for his body at the gym, and I think he had some sort of complex about being the shorter oneโ€”so he tried to make up for it with muscle mass.

โ€œSame-o, same-o,โ€ I said, glancing over at the pasture.

โ€œSorry I havenโ€™t been over this week to help out.ย ereโ€™s this girl Iโ€™ve been hanging out with,โ€ he said with a small smile. I couldnโ€™t remember the last time I saw him smile. Maybe he felt guilty being happy around me.

I raised my brows and gave him a pat on the arm. โ€œOh, really. Am I going to be meeting her sometime soon?โ€

โ€œProbably not. Canโ€™t bring her around the stud just yet. Gotta get her to fall

in love with me rst.โ€ He laughed but I knew he was serious. โ€œWhoa!โ€ Joe took a step to the side and looked behind me. โ€œWho is that?โ€

I turned around and saw Grace laying out a towel on the ground. She bent over, her whole behind in view, and placed a book on the ground.ย en she straightened the towel and laid down on her back.

Joeโ€™s eyes slithered over Grace. I didnโ€™t like the way he was looking at her.

โ€œHey.โ€ I patted the side of his cheek. โ€œย atโ€™s my guest. I told you about her last night. Sheโ€™s the one with the car trouble.โ€

Joe let out a high-pitched whistle. โ€œย ey donโ€™t make them like that around

here.โ€

I shifted and stood in front of him, blocking his view. โ€œStop. Sheโ€™s a lady.โ€ โ€œSheโ€™s a knockout.โ€ He tried to get another look at her, but I blocked him.

I folded my arms across my chest. โ€œIโ€™m going to knock you out if you donโ€™t stop making eyes at her.โ€

Joeโ€™s face turned serious. โ€œYou like her?โ€ he said in a low voice.

โ€œSheโ€™s only here โ€™til Wednesday.โ€

โ€œย at didnโ€™t answer my question.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œMaybe.โ€

Joe patted my shoulder, and his eyes glistened. โ€œIโ€™m glad youโ€™re moving on.โ€ I didnโ€™t say anything and just nodded. I knew Joe wanted me to date again.

Probably more for his sake than mine.

He tilted his head. โ€œIntroduce me, so I can nd out whatโ€™s going on with her car.โ€

โ€œFine, but donโ€™t say anything weird,โ€ I warned.

He ran his ngers through his hair and straightened out his belt buckle. โ€œIโ€™m cool as a cucumber, bro.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m serious.โ€ I narrowed my eyes at him. โ€œI donโ€™t want you scaring her o .โ€ โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€

I relaxed my face and led him toward Grace. A pair of oversized sunglasses covered her eyes, and her nose was in a book. It was obvious she spent time in the gym because her body was toned from her arms down to her legs.

โ€œGrace,โ€ I called out.

She looked up from her book and pulled o her sunglasses, revealing those blue, blue eyes.

โ€œย is here is my brother, Joe.โ€ I pointed to him. He bent down, extending his hand.

โ€œNice to meet you.โ€ Grace shook his hand.

โ€œย e pleasure is all mine,โ€ he said, emphasizing the wordย pleasure. He did that sometimes nowโ€”put emphasis on the wrong word when he spoke.

She gave me an odd look.ย Sorry, I mouthed.

โ€œYou here to look at my car?โ€ Grace asked.

Joe clasped his hands in front of him and his biceps exed. His little-dog complex was at work.

โ€œOf course. Calvin here couldnโ€™t handle it without me,โ€ he teased. I rolled my eyes. โ€œLetโ€™s take a look at that car.โ€

Joe redirected his attention to Grace. โ€œTell me what happened to it.โ€

She sighed. โ€œIt was ne all the way here, and I drove a long way. But when I left Bettyโ€™s Boutique, the check engine light came on. It started vibrating and shaking, even more so when I accelerated,โ€ Grace said. I could see the worry on her face.

Joe nodded. โ€œAll right, Iโ€™ll take a look at it.โ€

โ€œย anks,โ€ Grace said. โ€œKeys are on the kitchen table.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ll make sure youโ€™re not stranded here with my big bro.โ€ He laughed.

Graceโ€™s eyes bounced from me to Joe and back again like a pendulum swinging. My jaw tightened but I smiled anyway and steered my brother toward the house.ย e less he said to her the better.
