I woke up later on and it was still dark. I got out of bed and walked into Mom and Dadโs bedroom.
โMommy?โ I whispered. It was completely dark, so I couldnโt see her open her eyes. โMommy?โ
โYou okay, honey?โ she said groggily. โCan I sleep with you?โ
Mom scooted over toward Daddyโs side of the bed, and I snuggled up next to her. She kissed my hair.
โIs your hand okay?โ I said. โVia told me Daisy bit you.โ โIt was only a nip,โ she whispered in my ear.
โMommy โฆโ I started crying. โIโm sorry about what I said.โ
โShhh โฆ Thereโs nothing to be sorry about,โ she said, so quietly I could barely hear her. She was rubbing the side of her face against my face.
โIs Via ashamed of me?โ I said.
โNo, honey, no. You know sheโs not. Sheโs just adjusting to a new school. Itโs not easy.โ
โI know.โ
โI know you know.โ
โIโm sorry I called you a liar.โ
โGo to sleep, sweet boy.โฆ I love you so much.โ โI love you so much, too, Mommy.โ
โGood night, honey,โ she said very softly. โMommy, is Daisy with Grans now?โ
โI think so.โ
โAre they in heaven?โ โYes.โ
โDo people look the same when they get to heaven?โ โI donโt know. I donโt think so.โ
โThen how do people recognize each other?โ
โI donโt know, sweetie.โ She sounded tired. โThey just feel it. You donโt need your eyes to love, right? You just feel it inside you. Thatโs
how it is in heaven. Itโs just love, and no one forgets who they love.โ She kissed me again.
โNow go to sleep, honey. Itโs late. And Iโm so tired.โ
But I couldnโt go to sleep, even after I knew she had fallen asleep. I could hear Daddy sleeping, too, and I imagined I could hear Via sleeping down the hallway in her room. And I wondered if Daisy was sleeping in heaven right then. And if she was sleeping, was she dreaming about me? And I wondered how it would feel to be in heaven someday and not have my face matter anymore. Just like it never, ever mattered to Daisy.
