Wonder

โ€œAuggie,โ€ said Via. โ€œCome quick. Mom needs to talk to you.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m not apologizing!โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t about you!โ€ she yelled. โ€œNot everything in the world is about you, Auggie! Now hurry up. Daisyโ€™s sick. Momโ€™s taking her to the emergency vet. Come say goodbye.โ€

I pushed the pillows off my face and looked up at her. Thatโ€™s when I saw she was crying. โ€œWhat do you mean โ€˜goodbyeโ€™?โ€

โ€œCome on!โ€ she said, holding out her hand.

I took her hand and followed her down the hall to the kitchen. Daisy was lying down sideways on the floor with her legs straight out in front of her. She was panting a lot, like sheโ€™d been running in the park. Mom was kneeling beside her, stroking the top of her head.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ I asked.

โ€œShe just started whimpering all of a sudden,โ€ said Via, kneeling down next to Mom.

I looked down at Mom, who was crying, too.

โ€œIโ€™m taking her to the animal hospital downtown,โ€ she said. โ€œThe taxiโ€™s coming to pick me up.โ€

โ€œThe vetโ€™ll make her better, right?โ€ I said.

Mom looked at me. โ€œI hope so, honey,โ€ she said quietly. โ€œBut I honestly donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œOf course he will!โ€ I said.

โ€œDaisyโ€™s been sick a lot lately, Auggie. And sheโ€™s old โ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut they can fix her,โ€ I said, looking at Via to agree with me, but Via wouldnโ€™t look up at me.

Momโ€™s lips were trembling. โ€œI think it might be time we say goodbye to Daisy, Auggie. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ I said.

โ€œWe donโ€™t want her to suffer, Auggie,โ€ she said.

The phone rang. Via picked it up, said, โ€œOkay, thanks,โ€ and then hung up.

โ€œThe taxiโ€™s outside,โ€ she said, wiping her tears with the backs of her

hands.

โ€œOkay, Auggie, open the door for me, sweetie?โ€ said Mom, picking Daisy up very gently like she was a huge droopy baby.

โ€œPlease, no, Mommy?โ€ I cried, putting myself in front of the door. โ€œHoney, please,โ€ said Mom. โ€œSheโ€™s very heavy.โ€

โ€œWhat about Daddy?โ€ I cried.

โ€œHeโ€™s meeting me at the hospital,โ€ Mom said. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t want Daisy to suffer, Auggie.โ€

Via moved me away from the door and held it open it for Mom. โ€œMy cell phoneโ€™s on if you need anything,โ€ Mom said to Via. โ€œCan

you cover her with the blanket?โ€

Via nodded, but she was crying hysterically now.

โ€œSay goodbye to Daisy, kids,โ€ Mom said, tears streaming down her face.

โ€œI love you, Daisy,โ€ Via said, kissing Daisy on the nose. โ€œI love you so much.โ€

โ€œBye, little girlie โ€ฆ,โ€ I whispered into Daisyโ€™s ear. โ€œI love you.โ€ฆโ€

Mom carried Daisy down the stoop. The taxi driver had opened the back door and we watched her get in. Just before she closed the door, Mom looked up at us standing by the entrance to the building and she gave us a little wave. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever seen her look sadder.

โ€œI love you, Mommy!โ€ said Via.

โ€œI love you, Mommy!โ€ I said. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Mommy!โ€

Mom blew a kiss to us and closed the door. We watched the car leave and then Via closed the door. She looked at me a second, and then she hugged me very, very tight while we both cried a million tears.
