โAuggie,โ said Via. โCome quick. Mom needs to talk to you.โ โIโm not apologizing!โ
โThis isnโt about you!โ she yelled. โNot everything in the world is about you, Auggie! Now hurry up. Daisyโs sick. Momโs taking her to the emergency vet. Come say goodbye.โ
I pushed the pillows off my face and looked up at her. Thatโs when I saw she was crying. โWhat do you mean โgoodbyeโ?โ
โCome on!โ she said, holding out her hand.
I took her hand and followed her down the hall to the kitchen. Daisy was lying down sideways on the floor with her legs straight out in front of her. She was panting a lot, like sheโd been running in the park. Mom was kneeling beside her, stroking the top of her head.
โWhat happened?โ I asked.
โShe just started whimpering all of a sudden,โ said Via, kneeling down next to Mom.
I looked down at Mom, who was crying, too.
โIโm taking her to the animal hospital downtown,โ she said. โThe taxiโs coming to pick me up.โ
โThe vetโll make her better, right?โ I said.
Mom looked at me. โI hope so, honey,โ she said quietly. โBut I honestly donโt know.โ
โOf course he will!โ I said.
โDaisyโs been sick a lot lately, Auggie. And sheโs old โฆโ
โBut they can fix her,โ I said, looking at Via to agree with me, but Via wouldnโt look up at me.
Momโs lips were trembling. โI think it might be time we say goodbye to Daisy, Auggie. Iโm sorry.โ
โNo!โ I said.
โWe donโt want her to suffer, Auggie,โ she said.
The phone rang. Via picked it up, said, โOkay, thanks,โ and then hung up.
โThe taxiโs outside,โ she said, wiping her tears with the backs of her
hands.
โOkay, Auggie, open the door for me, sweetie?โ said Mom, picking Daisy up very gently like she was a huge droopy baby.
โPlease, no, Mommy?โ I cried, putting myself in front of the door. โHoney, please,โ said Mom. โSheโs very heavy.โ
โWhat about Daddy?โ I cried.
โHeโs meeting me at the hospital,โ Mom said. โHe doesnโt want Daisy to suffer, Auggie.โ
Via moved me away from the door and held it open it for Mom. โMy cell phoneโs on if you need anything,โ Mom said to Via. โCan
you cover her with the blanket?โ
Via nodded, but she was crying hysterically now.
โSay goodbye to Daisy, kids,โ Mom said, tears streaming down her face.
โI love you, Daisy,โ Via said, kissing Daisy on the nose. โI love you so much.โ
โBye, little girlie โฆ,โ I whispered into Daisyโs ear. โI love you.โฆโ
Mom carried Daisy down the stoop. The taxi driver had opened the back door and we watched her get in. Just before she closed the door, Mom looked up at us standing by the entrance to the building and she gave us a little wave. I donโt think Iโve ever seen her look sadder.
โI love you, Mommy!โ said Via.
โI love you, Mommy!โ I said. โIโm sorry, Mommy!โ
Mom blew a kiss to us and closed the door. We watched the car leave and then Via closed the door. She looked at me a second, and then she hugged me very, very tight while we both cried a million tears.
