At lunch the next day, Summer asked me what I was going to be for Halloween. Of course, Iโd been thinking about it since last Halloween, so I knew right away.
โBoba Fett.โ
โYou know you can wear a costume to school on Halloween, right?โ โNo way, really?โ
โSo long as itโs politically correct.โ โWhat, like no guns and stuff?โ โExactly.โ
โWhat about blasters?โ
โI think a blasterโs like a gun, Auggie.โ
โOh man โฆ,โ I said, shaking my head. Boba Fett has a blaster.
โAt least, we donโt have to come like a character in a book anymore. In the lower school thatโs what you had to do. Last year I was the Wicked Witch of the West fromย The Wizard of Oz.โ
โBut thatโs a movie, not a book.โ
โHello?โ Summer answered. โIt was a book first! One of my favorite books in the world, actually. My dad used to read it to me every night in the first grade.โ
When Summer talks, especially when sheโs excited about something, her eyes squint like sheโs looking right at the sun.
I hardly ever see Summer during the day, since the only class we have together is English. But ever since that first lunch at school, weโve sat at the summer table together every day, just the two of us.
โSo, what are you going to be?โ I asked her.
โI donโt know yet. I know what Iโd really want to go as, but I think it might be too dorky. You know, Savannaโs group isnโt even wearing costumes this year. They think weโre too old for Halloween.โ
โWhat? Thatโs just dumb.โ โI know, right?โ
โI thought you didnโt care what those girls think.โ She shrugged and took a long drink of her milk.
โSo, what dorky thing do you want to dress up as?โ I asked her, smiling.
โPromise not to laugh?โ She raised her eyebrows and her shoulders, embarrassed. โA unicorn.โ
I smiled and looked down at my sandwich. โHey, you promised not to laugh!โ she laughed.
โOkay, okay,โ I said. โBut youโre right: that is too dorky.โ
โI know!โ she said. โBut I have it all planned out: Iโd make the head out of papier-mรขchรฉ, and paint the horn gold and make the mane gold, too.โฆ It would be so awesome.โ
โOkay.โ I shrugged. โThen you should do it. Who cares what other people think, right?โ
โMaybe what Iโll do is just wear it for the Halloween Parade,โ she said, snapping her fingers. โAnd Iโll just be, like, a Goth girl for school. Yeah, thatโs it, thatโs what Iโll do.โ
โSounds like a plan.โ I nodded.
โThanks, Auggie,โ she giggled. โYou know, thatโs what I like best about you. I feel like I can tell you anything.โ
โYeah?โ I answered, nodding. I gave her a thumbs-up sign. โCool beans.โ
