Finally, after what seemed like a forever of running, someone yelled: โI think we lost them!โ
โAmos?โ
โIโm right here!โ said Amosโs voice a few feet behind us. โWe can stop!โ Miles yelled from farther up.
โJack!โ I yelled.
โWhoa!โ said Jack. โIโm here.โ โI canโt see a thing!โ
โAre you sure we lost them?โ Henry asked, letting go of my arm. Thatโs when I realized that heโd been the one who was pulling me as we ran.
โYeah.โ
โShh! Letโs listen!โ
We all got super quiet, listening for footsteps in the dark. All we could hear were the crickets and frogs and our own crazy panting. We were out of breath, stomachs hurting, bodies bent over our knees.
โWe lost them,โ said Henry. โWhoa! That was intense!โ
โWhat happened to the flashlight?โ โI dropped it!โ
โHow did you guys know?โ said Jack. โWe saw them before.โ
โThey looked like jerks.โ
โYou just rammed into him!โ I said to Amos. โI know, right?โ laughed Amos.
โHe didnโt even see it coming!โ said Miles.
โHe was like, โAre you a freak, too?โ and you were like,ย bam!โ said Jack.
โBam!โ said Amos, throwing a fake punch in the air. โBut after I tackled him, I was like, run, Amos, you schmuck, heโs ten times bigger than you! And I got up and started running as fast as I could!โ
We all started laughing.
โI grabbed Auggie and I was like, โRun!โ โ said Henry. โI didnโt even know it was you pulling me!โ I answered. โThat was wild,โ said Amos, shaking his head.
โTotally wild.โ
โYour lip is bleeding, dude.โ
โI got in a couple of good punches,โ answered Amos, wiping his lip. โI think they were seventh graders.โ
โThey were huge.โ
โLosers!โ Henry shouted really loudly, but we all shushed him. We listened for a second to make sure no one had heard him.
โWhere the heck are we?โ asked Amos. โI canโt even see the screen.โ
โI think weโre in the cornfields,โ answered Henry.
โDuh, weโre in the cornfields,โ said Miles, pushing a cornstalk at Henry.
โOkay, I know exactly where we are,โ said Amos. โWe have to go back in this direction. Thatโll take us to the other side of the field.โ
โYo, dudes,โ said Jack, hand high in the air. โThat was really cool of you guys to come back for us. Really cool. Thanks.โ
โNo problem,โ answered Amos, high-fiving Jack. And then Miles and Henry high-fived him, too.
โYeah, dudes, thanks,โ I said, holding my palm up like Jack just had, though I wasnโt sure if theyโd high-five me, too.
Amos looked at me and nodded. โIt was cool how you stood your ground, little dude,โ he said, high-fiving me.
โYeah, Auggie,โ said Miles, high-fiving me, too. โYou were like, โWeโre littler than you guysโ โฆโ
โI didnโt know what else to say!โ I laughed.
โVery cool,โ said Henry, and he high-fived me, too. โSorry I ripped your sweatshirt.โ
I looked down, and my sweatshirt was completely torn down the middle. One sleeve was ripped off, and the other was so stretched out it was hanging down to my knees.
โHey, your elbowโs bleeding,โ said Jack. โYeah.โ I shrugged. It was starting to hurt a lot. โYou okay?โ said Jack, seeing my face.
I nodded. Suddenly I felt like crying, and I was trying really hard not to do that.
โWait, your hearing aids are gone!โ said Jack.
โWhat!โ I yelled, touching my ears. The hearing aid band was
definitely gone. Thatโs why I felt like I was underwater! โOh no!โ I said, and thatโs when I couldnโt hold it in anymore. Everything that had just happened kind of hit me and I couldnโt help it: I started to cry. Like big crying, what Mom would call โthe waterworks.โ I was so embarrassed I hid my face in my arm, but I couldnโt stop the tears from coming.
The guys were really nice to me, though. They patted me on the back.
โYouโre okay, dude. Itโs okay,โ they said.
โYouโre one brave little dude, you know that?โ said Amos, putting his arm around my shoulders. And when I kept on crying, he put both his arms around me like my dad would have done and let me cry.
