Wonder

Finally, after what seemed like a forever of running, someone yelled: โ€œI think we lost them!โ€

โ€œAmos?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m right here!โ€ said Amosโ€™s voice a few feet behind us. โ€œWe can stop!โ€ Miles yelled from farther up.

โ€œJack!โ€ I yelled.

โ€œWhoa!โ€ said Jack. โ€œIโ€™m here.โ€ โ€œI canโ€™t see a thing!โ€

โ€œAre you sure we lost them?โ€ Henry asked, letting go of my arm. Thatโ€™s when I realized that heโ€™d been the one who was pulling me as we ran.

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œShh! Letโ€™s listen!โ€

We all got super quiet, listening for footsteps in the dark. All we could hear were the crickets and frogs and our own crazy panting. We were out of breath, stomachs hurting, bodies bent over our knees.

โ€œWe lost them,โ€ said Henry. โ€œWhoa! That was intense!โ€

โ€œWhat happened to the flashlight?โ€ โ€œI dropped it!โ€

โ€œHow did you guys know?โ€ said Jack. โ€œWe saw them before.โ€

โ€œThey looked like jerks.โ€

โ€œYou just rammed into him!โ€ I said to Amos. โ€œI know, right?โ€ laughed Amos.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t even see it coming!โ€ said Miles.

โ€œHe was like, โ€˜Are you a freak, too?โ€™ and you were like,ย bam!โ€ said Jack.

โ€œBam!โ€ said Amos, throwing a fake punch in the air. โ€œBut after I tackled him, I was like, run, Amos, you schmuck, heโ€™s ten times bigger than you! And I got up and started running as fast as I could!โ€

We all started laughing.

โ€œI grabbed Auggie and I was like, โ€˜Run!โ€™ โ€ said Henry. โ€œI didnโ€™t even know it was you pulling me!โ€ I answered. โ€œThat was wild,โ€ said Amos, shaking his head.

โ€œTotally wild.โ€

โ€œYour lip is bleeding, dude.โ€

โ€œI got in a couple of good punches,โ€ answered Amos, wiping his lip. โ€œI think they were seventh graders.โ€

โ€œThey were huge.โ€

โ€œLosers!โ€ Henry shouted really loudly, but we all shushed him. We listened for a second to make sure no one had heard him.

โ€œWhere the heck are we?โ€ asked Amos. โ€œI canโ€™t even see the screen.โ€

โ€œI think weโ€™re in the cornfields,โ€ answered Henry.

โ€œDuh, weโ€™re in the cornfields,โ€ said Miles, pushing a cornstalk at Henry.

โ€œOkay, I know exactly where we are,โ€ said Amos. โ€œWe have to go back in this direction. Thatโ€™ll take us to the other side of the field.โ€

โ€œYo, dudes,โ€ said Jack, hand high in the air. โ€œThat was really cool of you guys to come back for us. Really cool. Thanks.โ€

โ€œNo problem,โ€ answered Amos, high-fiving Jack. And then Miles and Henry high-fived him, too.

โ€œYeah, dudes, thanks,โ€ I said, holding my palm up like Jack just had, though I wasnโ€™t sure if theyโ€™d high-five me, too.

Amos looked at me and nodded. โ€œIt was cool how you stood your ground, little dude,โ€ he said, high-fiving me.

โ€œYeah, Auggie,โ€ said Miles, high-fiving me, too. โ€œYou were like, โ€˜Weโ€™re littler than you guysโ€™ โ€ฆโ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t know what else to say!โ€ I laughed.

โ€œVery cool,โ€ said Henry, and he high-fived me, too. โ€œSorry I ripped your sweatshirt.โ€

I looked down, and my sweatshirt was completely torn down the middle. One sleeve was ripped off, and the other was so stretched out it was hanging down to my knees.

โ€œHey, your elbowโ€™s bleeding,โ€ said Jack. โ€œYeah.โ€ I shrugged. It was starting to hurt a lot. โ€œYou okay?โ€ said Jack, seeing my face.

I nodded. Suddenly I felt like crying, and I was trying really hard not to do that.

โ€œWait, your hearing aids are gone!โ€ said Jack.

โ€œWhat!โ€ I yelled, touching my ears. The hearing aid band was

definitely gone. Thatโ€™s why I felt like I was underwater! โ€œOh no!โ€ I said, and thatโ€™s when I couldnโ€™t hold it in anymore. Everything that had just happened kind of hit me and I couldnโ€™t help it: I started to cry. Like big crying, what Mom would call โ€œthe waterworks.โ€ I was so embarrassed I hid my face in my arm, but I couldnโ€™t stop the tears from coming.

The guys were really nice to me, though. They patted me on the back.

โ€œYouโ€™re okay, dude. Itโ€™s okay,โ€ they said.

โ€œYouโ€™re one brave little dude, you know that?โ€ said Amos, putting his arm around my shoulders. And when I kept on crying, he put both his arms around me like my dad would have done and let me cry.
