Chapter no 53

Unravel Me (Shatter Me Book 2)

Adam, Kenji, Castle, and I are camped out in his office trying to discuss strategy.

Last night I ran straight to Kenjiโ€”who then took me to Castleโ€”to tell him what Warner told me. Castle was both relieved and horrified, and I think he still hasnโ€™t digested the information yet.

He told me he was going to meet with Warner in the morning, just to follow up, just to see if Warner would be willing to elaborate at all (he wasnโ€™t), and that Kenji, Adam, and I should meet him in his office at lunch.

So now weโ€™re all crammed into his small space, along with 7 others. The faces in this room are many of the same ones I saw when we journeyed into The Reestablishmentโ€™s storage compound; that means theyโ€™re important, integral to this movement. And it makes me wonder when I ever became a part of Castleโ€™s core group at Omega Point.

I canโ€™t help but feel a little proud. A little thrilled to be someone he relies on. To be contributing.

And it makes me wonder how much Iโ€™ve changed in such a short period of time. How different my life has become, how much stronger and how much weaker I feel now. It makes me wonder whether things wouldโ€™ve turned out differently if Adam and I had found a way to stay together. If I ever wouldโ€™ve ventured outside of the safety he introduced to my life.

I wonder about a lot of things.

But when I look up and catch him staring at me, my wonders disappear; and Iโ€™m left with nothing but the pains of missing him. Left wishing he wouldnโ€™t look away the moment I look up.

This was my miserable choice. I brought it upon myself.

Castle is sitting at his desk, elbows propped up on the table, chin resting on clasped hands. His eyebrows are furrowed, his lips pursed, his eyes focused on the papers in front of him.

He hasnโ€™t said a word in 5 minutes.

Finally, he looks up. Looks at Kenji, who is sitting right in front of him, between me and Adam. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€ he says. โ€œOffensive or defensive?โ€

โ€œGuerrilla warfare,โ€ Kenji says without hesitation. โ€œNothing else.โ€ A deep breath. โ€œYes,โ€ Castle says. โ€œI thought so too.โ€

โ€œWe need to be split up,โ€ Kenji says. โ€œDo you want to assign groups, or should I?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll assign the preliminary groups. Iโ€™d like you to look them over and suggest changes, if any.โ€

Kenji nods.

โ€œPerfect. And weaponsโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll oversee that,โ€ Adam says. โ€œI can make sure everything is clean, loaded, ready to go. Iโ€™m already familiar with the armory.โ€

I had no idea.

โ€œGood. Excellent. Weโ€™ll assign one group to try and get on base to find Winston and Brendan; everyone else will spread out among the compounds. Our mission is simple: save as many civilians as possible. Take out only as many soldiers as is absolutely necessary. Our fight is not against the men, but against their leadersโ€”we must never forget that. Kenji,โ€ he says, โ€œIโ€™d like you to oversee the groups entering the compounds. Do you feel comfortable doing that?โ€

Kenji nods.

โ€œI will lead the group onto base,โ€ Castle says. โ€œWhile you and Mr. Kent would be ideal for infiltrating Sector 45, Iโ€™d like you to stay with Ms. Ferrars; the three of you work well together, and we could use your strengths on the ground. Now,โ€ he says, spreading out the papers in front of him, โ€œIโ€™ve been studying these blueprints all niโ€”โ€

Someone is banging on the glass window in Castleโ€™s door.

Heโ€™s a youngish man Iโ€™ve never seen before, with bright, light-brown eyes and hair cropped so close to the crown I canโ€™t even make out the color. His eyes are pulled together, his forehead tight, tense. โ€œSir!โ€ heโ€™s shouting, heโ€™sย beenย shouting, I realize, but his voice is muffled and only then does it dawn on me that this room must be soundproof, if only just a little bit.

Kenji jumps out of his chair, yanks the door open.

โ€œSir!โ€ The man is out of breath. Itโ€™s clear he ran all the way here. โ€œSir, pleaseโ€”โ€

โ€œSamuel?โ€ Castle is up, around his desk, charging forward to grip this boyโ€™s shoulders, trying to focus his eyes. โ€œWhat is itโ€”whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œSir,โ€ Samuel says again, this time more normally, his breathing almost within his grasp. โ€œWe have aโ€”a situation.โ€

โ€œTell me everythingโ€”now is not the time to hold back if something has happenedโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nothing to do with anything topside, sir, itโ€™s justโ€”โ€ His eyes dart in

my direction for one split second. โ€œOur . . . visitorโ€”heโ€”he is not cooperating, sir, heโ€™sโ€”heโ€™s giving the guards a lot of troubleโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat kind of trouble?โ€ Castleโ€™s eyes are two slits.

Samuel drops his voice. โ€œHeโ€™s managed to make a dent in the door, sir.

Heโ€™s managed to dent theย steel door, sir, and heโ€™s threatening the guards and theyโ€™re beginning to worryโ€”โ€

โ€œJuliette.โ€

No.

โ€œI need your help,โ€ Castle says without looking at me. โ€œI know you donโ€™t want to do this, but youโ€™re the only one heโ€™ll listen to and we canโ€™t afford this distraction, not right now.โ€ His voice is so thin, so stretched it sounds as if it might actually crack. โ€œPlease do what you can to contain him, and when you deem it safe for one of the girls to enter, perhaps we can find a way to sedate him without endangering them in the process.โ€

My eyes flick up to Adam almost accidentally. He doesnโ€™t look happy. โ€œJuliette.โ€ Castleโ€™s jaw tightens. โ€œPlease. Go now.โ€

I nod. Turn to leave.

โ€œGet ready,โ€ Castle adds as I walk out the door, his voice too soft for the words he speaks next. โ€œUnless we have been deceived, the supreme will be massacring unarmed civilians tomorrow, and we canโ€™t afford to assume Warner has given us false information. We leave at dawn.โ€
