Unravel Me (Shatter Me Book 2)

James joins us during our training session before dinner.

Heโ€™s been hanging out with us a lot since we got back, and we all seem happier when heโ€™s around. Thereโ€™s something about his presence thatโ€™s so disarming, so welcome. Itโ€™s so good to have him back.

Iโ€™ve been showing him how easily I can break things now.

The bricks are nothing. It feels like crushing a piece of cake. The metal pipes bend in my hands like plastic straws. Wood is a little tricky because if I break it the wrong way I can catch a splinter, but just about nothing is difficult anymore. Kenji has been thinking of new ways to test my abilities; lately heโ€™s been trying to see if I can projectโ€”if I can focus my power from a distance.

Not all abilities are designed for projection, apparently. Lily, for example, has that incredible photographic memory. But sheโ€™d never be able to project that ability onto anyone else.

Projection is, by far, the most difficult thing Iโ€™ve ever attempted to do. Itโ€™s extremely complicated and requires both mental and physical exertion. I have to be wholly in control of my mind, and I have to know exactly how my brain communicates with whichever invisible bone in my body is responsible for my gift. Which means I have to know how to locate the source of my ability

โ€”and how to focus it into one concentrated point of power I can tap into from anywhere.

Itโ€™s hurting my brain.

โ€œCan I try to break something, too?โ€ James is asking. He grabs one of the bricks off the stack and weighs it in his hands. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m super strong like you.โ€

โ€œHave you everย feltย super strong?โ€ Kenji asks him. โ€œLike, you know, abnormally strong?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ James says, โ€œbut Iโ€™ve never tried to break anything, either.โ€ He blinks at Kenji. โ€œDo you think maybe I could be like you guys? That maybe I have some kind of power, too?โ€

Kenji studies him. Seems to be sorting some things out in his head. Says, โ€œItโ€™s definitely possible. Your brotherโ€™s obviously got something in his DNA, which means you might, too.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ James is practically jumping up and down.

Kenji chuckles. โ€œI have no idea. Iโ€™m just saying it might beย possiโ€”no,โ€ he shouts, โ€œJamesโ€”โ€

โ€œOops.โ€ James is wincing, dropping the brick to the floor and clenching his fist against the gash bleeding in the palm of his hand. โ€œI think I pressed too hard and it slipped,โ€ he says, struggling not to cry.

โ€œYouย think?โ€ Kenji is shaking his head, breathing fast. โ€œDamn, kid, you canโ€™t just go around slicing your hand open like that. Youโ€™re going to give me a freaking heart attack. Come here,โ€ he says, more gently now. โ€œLet me take a look.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ James says, cheeks flushed, hiding his hand behind his back. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Itโ€™ll go away soon.โ€

โ€œThat kind of cut is not just going to go away,โ€ Kenji says. โ€œNow let me take a look at itโ€”โ€

โ€œWait.โ€ I interrupt him, caught by the intense look on Jamesโ€™ face, the way he seems to be so focused on the clenched fist heโ€™s hiding. โ€œJamesโ€”what do you mean itโ€™ll โ€˜go awayโ€™? Do you mean itโ€™s going to get better? On its own?โ€

James blinks at me. โ€œWell yeah,โ€ he says. โ€œIt always gets better really quickly.โ€

โ€œWhat does? What gets better really quickly?โ€ Kenji is staring too now, already catching on to my theory and throwing looks at me, mouthingย Holy shitย over and over again.

โ€œWhen I get hurt,โ€ James says, looking at us like weโ€™ve lost our minds. โ€œLike if you cut yourself,โ€ he says to Kenji, โ€œwouldnโ€™t it just get better?โ€

โ€œIt depends on the size of the cut,โ€ Kenji tells him. โ€œBut for a gash like the one on your hand?โ€ He shakes his head. โ€œIโ€™d need to clean it to make sure it didnโ€™t get infected. Then Iโ€™d have to wrap it up in gauze and some kind of ointment to keep it from scarring. And then,โ€ he says, โ€œit would take at least a couple days for it to scab up. And then it would begin to heal.โ€

James is blinking like heโ€™s never heard of something so absurd in his life. โ€œLet me see your hand,โ€ Kenji says to him.

James hesitates.

โ€œItโ€™s all right,โ€ I tell him. โ€œReally. Weโ€™re just curious.โ€

Slowly, so slowly, James shows us his clenched fist. Even more slowly, he uncurls his fingers, watching our reactions the whole time. And exactly where just a moment ago there was a huge gash, now thereโ€™s nothing but perfect pink skin and a little pool of blood.

โ€œHoly shit on a cracker,โ€ Kenji breathes. โ€œSorry,โ€ he says to me, jumping forward to grab Jamesโ€™ arm, barely able to rein in his smiles, โ€œbut I need to get this guy over to the medical wing. That okay? We can pick up again tomorrowโ€”โ€ โ€œBut Iโ€™m not hurt anymore,โ€ James protests. โ€œIโ€™m okayโ€”โ€

โ€œI know, kid, but youโ€™re going to want to come with me.โ€ โ€œBut why?โ€

โ€œHow would you like,โ€ he says, leading James out the door, โ€œto start spending some time with two very pretty girls โ€

And theyโ€™re gone. And Iโ€™m laughing.

Sitting in the middle of the training room all by myself when I hear 2 familiar knocks at my door.

I already know who itโ€™s going to be. โ€œMs. Ferrars.โ€

I whip around, not because Iโ€™m surprised to hear Castleโ€™s voice, but because Iโ€™m surprised at the intonation. His eyes are narrowed, his lips tight, his eyes sharp and flashing in this light.

He is very, very angry. Crap.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry about the hallway,โ€ I tell him, โ€œI didnโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œWe can discuss your public and wildly inappropriate displays of affection at a later time, Ms. Ferrars, but right now I have a very important question to ask you and I would advise you to be honest, as acutely honest as is physically possible.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€โ€”I can hardly breatheโ€”โ€œwhat is it?โ€

Castle narrows his eyes at me. โ€œI have just had a conversation with Warner, who says he is able to touch you without consequence, and that this information is something you are well aware of.โ€

And I think, Wow, I did it. I actually managed to die of a stroke at age 17. โ€œI need to know,โ€ Castle hurries on, โ€œwhether or not this information is true

and I need to know right now.โ€

Thereโ€™s glue all over my tongue, stuck to my teeth, my lips, the roof of my mouth, and I canโ€™t speak, I canโ€™t move, Iโ€™m pretty sure I just had a seizure or an aneurysm or heart failure or something equally as awful but I canโ€™t explain any of this to Castle because I canโ€™t move my jaw even an inch.

โ€œMs.ย Ferrars.ย I donโ€™t think you understand how important this question is.

I need an answer from you, and I need it thirty seconds ago.โ€ โ€œI Iโ€”โ€

โ€œToday, I need an answerย today, right now, this very momentโ€”โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I choke out, blushing through my skull, horribly ashamed, embarrassed, horrified in every possible way and the only thing I can think of

is Adam Adam Adam how will Adam respond to this informationย now, why does this have to happenย now, why did Warner say anything at all and I want to kill him for sharing the secret that was mine to tell, mine to hide, mine to hoard.

Castle looks like heโ€™s a balloon that fell in love with a pushpin that got too close and ruined him forever. โ€œSo itโ€™s true, then?โ€

I drop my eyes. โ€œYes, itโ€™s true.โ€

He falls to the floor right across from me, astonished. โ€œHow is it even possible, do you think?โ€

Because Warner is Adamโ€™s brother, I donโ€™t tell him.

And I donโ€™t tell him because it isย Adamโ€™sย secret to tell and I will not talk about it until he does, even though I desperately want to tell Castle that the connection must be in their blood, that they both must share a similar kind of gift or Energy, or oh ohย oh

Oh God. Oh no.

Warner is one of us.
