Chapter no 26

Unravel Me (Shatter Me Book 2)

Kenji is already waiting for me.

He and Winston and Brendan are sitting at the same table again, and I slide into my seat with a distracted nod and eyes that refuse to focus in front of me.

โ€œHeโ€™s not here,โ€ Kenji says, shoving a spoonful of breakfast into his mouth. โ€œWhat?โ€ Oh how fascinating look at this fork and this spoon and this table.

โ€œWhat do yโ€”โ€

โ€œNot here,โ€ he says, his mouth still half full of food.

Winston clears his throat, scratches the back of his head. Brendan shifts in his seat beside me.

โ€œOh. Iโ€”I, umโ€”โ€ Heat flushes up my neck as I look around at the 3 guys sitting at this table. I want to ask Kenji where Adam is, why he isnโ€™t here, how heโ€™s doing, if heโ€™s okay, if heโ€™s been eating regularly. I want to ask a million questions I shouldnโ€™t be asking but itโ€™s blatantly clear that none of them want to talk about the awkward details of my personal life. And I donโ€™t want to be that sad, pathetic girl. I donโ€™t want pity. I donโ€™t want to see the uncomfortable sympathy in their eyes.

So I sit up. Clear my throat.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on with the patrols?โ€ I ask Winston. โ€œIs it getting any worse?โ€

Winston looks up midchew, surprised. He swallows down the food too quickly and coughs once, twice. Takes a sip of his coffeeโ€”tar blackโ€”and leans forward, looking eager. โ€œItโ€™s getting weirder,โ€ he says.

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah, so, remember how I told you guys that Warner was showing up every night?โ€

Warner. I canโ€™t get the image of his smiling, laughing face out of my head.ย We nod.

โ€œWell.โ€ He leans back in his chair. Holds up his hands. โ€œLast night?

Nothing.โ€

โ€œNothing?โ€ Brendanโ€™s eyebrows are high on his forehead. โ€œWhat do you mean, nothing?โ€

โ€œI mean no one was there.โ€ He shrugs. Picks up his fork. Stabs at a piece of food. โ€œNot Warner, not a single soldier. Night before last?โ€ He looks around at us. โ€œFifty, maybe seventy-five soldiers. Last night, zero.โ€

โ€œDid you tell Castle about this?โ€ Kenji isnโ€™t eating anymore. Heโ€™s staring at Winston with a focused, too-serious look on his face. Itโ€™s worrying me.

โ€œYeah.โ€ Winston nods as he takes another sip of his coffee. โ€œI turned in my report about an hour ago.โ€

โ€œYou mean you havenโ€™t gone to sleep yet?โ€ I ask, eyes wide.

โ€œI slept yesterday,โ€ he says, waving a haphazard hand at me. โ€œOr the day before yesterday. I canโ€™t remember. God, this coffee is disgusting,โ€ he says, gulping it down.

โ€œRight. Maybe you should lay off the coffee, yeah?โ€ Brendan tries to grab Winstonโ€™s cup.

Winston slaps at his hand, shoots him a dark look. โ€œNot all of us have electricity running through our veins,โ€ he says. โ€œIโ€™m not a freaking powerhouse of energy like you are.โ€

โ€œI only did that onceโ€”โ€ โ€œTwice!โ€

โ€œโ€”and it was an emergency,โ€ he says, looking a little sheepish. โ€œWhat are you guys talking about?โ€ I ask.

โ€œThis guyโ€โ€”Kenji jerks a thumb at Brendanโ€”โ€œcan, like,ย literallyย recharge his own body. He doesnโ€™t need to sleep. Itโ€™s insane.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not fair,โ€ Winston mutters, ripping a piece of bread in half. I turn to Brendan, jaw unhinged. โ€œNo way.โ€

He nods. Shrugs. โ€œIโ€™ve only done it once.โ€

โ€œTwice!โ€ Winston says again. โ€œAnd heโ€™s a freaking fetus,โ€ he says to me. โ€œHeโ€™s already got way too much energy as it isโ€”shit, all of you kids doโ€”and yet heโ€™s the one who comes with a rechargeable battery life.โ€

โ€œI am not aย fetus,โ€ Brendan says, spluttering, glancing at me as heat colors his cheeks. โ€œHeโ€™sโ€”thatโ€™s notโ€”youโ€™reย mad,โ€ he says, glaring at Winston.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Winston says, nodding, his mouth full of food again. โ€œI am mad.

Iโ€™m pissed off.โ€ He swallows. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m cranky as hell because Iโ€™m tired. And Iโ€™m hungry. And I need more coffee.โ€ He shoves away from the table. Stands up. โ€œIโ€™m going to go get more coffee.โ€

โ€œI thought you said it was disgusting.โ€

He levels a look at me. โ€œYes, but I am a sad, sad man with very low standards.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true,โ€ Brendan says. โ€œShut up, fetus.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re only allowed one cup,โ€ Kenji points out, looking up to meet

Winstonโ€™s eyes.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I always tell them Iโ€™m taking yours,โ€ he says, and stalks off. Kenji is laughing, shoulders shaking.

Brendan is mumbling โ€œI amย notย a fetusโ€ย under his breath, stabbing at his food with renewed vigor.

โ€œHow oldย areย you?โ€ I ask, curious. Heโ€™s so white-blond and pale-blue-eyed that he doesnโ€™t seem real. He looks like the kind of person who could never age, who would remain forever preserved in this ethereal form.

โ€œTwenty-four,โ€ he says, looking grateful for a chance at validation. โ€œJust turned twenty-four, actually. Had my birthday last week.โ€

โ€œOh, wow.โ€ Iโ€™m surprised. He doesnโ€™t look much older than 18. I wonder what it must be like to celebrate a birthday at Omega Point. โ€œWell, happy birthday,โ€ I say, smiling at him. โ€œI hopeโ€”I hope you have a very good year. Andโ€โ€”I try to think of something nice to sayโ€”โ€œand a lot of happy days.โ€

Heโ€™s staring back at me now, amused, looking straight into my eyes.

Grinning. He says, โ€œThanks.โ€ Smiles a bit wider. โ€œThanks very much.โ€ And he doesnโ€™t look away.

My face is hot.

Iโ€™m struggling to understand why heโ€™s still smiling at me, why he doesnโ€™t stop smiling even when he finally looks away, why Kenji keeps glancing at me like heโ€™s trying to hold in a laugh and Iโ€™m flustered, feeling oddly embarrassed and searching for something to say.

โ€œSo what are we going to do today?โ€ I ask Kenji, hoping my voice sounds neutral, normal.

Kenji drains his water cup. Wipes his mouth. โ€œToday,โ€ he says, โ€œIโ€™m going to teach you how to shoot.โ€

โ€œA gun?โ€

โ€œYup.โ€ He grabs his tray. Grabs mine, too. โ€œWait here, Iโ€™m gonna drop these off.โ€ He moves to go before he stops, turns back, glances at Brendan and says, โ€œPut it out of your head, bro.โ€

Brendan looks up, confused. โ€œWhat?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s not going to happen.โ€

โ€œWhaโ€”โ€

Kenji stares at him, eyebrows raised.

Brendanโ€™s mouth falls closed. His cheeks are pink again. โ€œI know that.โ€ โ€œUh-huh.โ€ Kenji shakes his head, and walks away.

Brendan is suddenly in a hurry to go about his day.
