Chapter no 34 – ALEX

Twisted Love (Twisted, #1)

I made pancakes.

I rarely cookedโ€”why waste my time doing something I didnโ€™t enjoy and which I could pay other people to do? But I made an exception today. I was waiting for a visitor, and I didnโ€™t want to miss them by eating out.

The doorbell rang.

9:07 a.m., according to the clock on my microwave.

Earlier than Iโ€™d expected, which meant he was eager.

I shut off the stove and sipped my tea as I answered the door. When I did, I had to mask my surprise.

Not who I was expecting.

โ€œWhat are you doing here, Sunshine?โ€

Not the warmest greeting, but she needed to leave before he arrived.

Mild panic shot through me at the thought of them meeting.

Ava frowned. She looked exhausted, and I wondered if she was having nightmares again. Theyโ€™d eased since she recovered her memories, but they still popped up from time to time.

Worry and guilt washed over me. We hadnโ€™t spoken in days. She was still angry with me, and Iโ€™d been caught up in my plans. It was hard to convene a corporate board the week before Christmasโ€”in secret, no lessโ€”but I held

enough blackmail info over every member that theyโ€™d acquiesced to my request.

โ€œWe need to talk. About us,โ€ Ava said.

Not words any man wants to hear come out of his girlfriendโ€™s mouth, especially when he and said girlfriend were on rocky ground. I couldnโ€™t wait until this mess with my uncle was over so I could give her the attention she deserved.

As for my twisted and apparently ill-placed revenge plan against her โ€œfatherโ€โ€ฆthat was a confession for another day.

If I ever confessed.

Michael Chen was a sociopathic bastard even if he hadnโ€™t plotted my familyโ€™s murder, and I was tempted to follow through with my original plan to hire someone to off him in prison. But I wouldnโ€™tโ€ฆyet.

โ€œCan we talk later?โ€ A familiar gray Mercedes came into view, and my muscles tensed. โ€œNow isnโ€™t a good time.โ€

Ava shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s been a week, Christmas is in two days, and Iโ€™m tired of us tiptoeing around each other. Youโ€™ve been acting weird for a while now, and I deserve to know whatโ€™s going on. If you donโ€™t want to be with me any longerโ€”โ€ She exhaled a sharp breath, her face tinting red. โ€œJust tell me. Donโ€™t string me along.โ€

Goddamn it.ย If only Josh had come home for Christmas like heโ€™d planned, he wouldโ€™ve kept Ava away. But thereโ€™d been an earthquake in his volunteer regionโ€”he was okay, thank Godโ€”and the people needed all the medical help they could get in the aftermath, so heโ€™d stayed. Iโ€™d donated a hefty sum to help with his organizationโ€™s expenses as well. Partly out of charity, mostly out of guilt.

Ava wasnโ€™t the only Chen Iโ€™d fucked over these past few years.

My uncle parked and got out of his car, his face thunderous.

My grip tightened around my mug.

โ€œOf course I want to be with you,โ€ I said in a low voice while keeping an eye on Ivan. โ€œIโ€™ll always want to be with you. But Iโ€”โ€

โ€œAlex.โ€ My uncleโ€™s pleasant tone belied the fury simmering in his eyes. When Ava turned, startled, he smoothed his face into a gracious smile. โ€œWhoโ€™s this lovely creature?โ€

If the mug were glass, it wouldโ€™ve cracked by now. โ€œAva, Uncle Ivan,โ€ I responded, voice clipped.

โ€œAh, the infamous Ava. How lovely to meet you, dear.โ€

She smiled, looking uncomfortable. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize you were expecting company,โ€ she told me. โ€œUm, youโ€™re right. We can talk laterโ€”โ€

โ€œNonsense. Iโ€™m just here for a friendly chat with my nephew.โ€ Ivan placed a hand on Avaโ€™s back and guided her into the house.ย Get your fucking hands off her.ย Anger streaked through me, but I tamped it down.

I couldnโ€™t lose my cool. Not now.

We settled in the dining roomโ€”Ava and I on one side, Ivan on the other. Tension laced the air.

โ€œAnyone want a drink?โ€ I set my near-empty mug on the table. โ€œTea? Hot chocolate?โ€

Ava shook her head. โ€œNo, thanks.โ€

โ€œGreen tea for me.โ€ Ivan patted his stomach. I returned a few minutes later with his drink and found him in deep conversation with Ava.

โ€œโ€ฆThanksgiving weekend?โ€ My uncle took the tea from me with an oily smile. โ€œAlex, Ava was telling me about how you spent your Thanksgiving. He loves his holidays with the Chens,โ€ he told her. โ€œHe finds them soโ€ฆenlightening.โ€

My muscles burned from how tense I was while Ava returned his smile with her own uncertain one.

โ€œWhat can I do for you, uncle?โ€ I asked, taking my seat with careful nonchalance. โ€œIt must be important if youโ€™re here this early. Long drive from Philly.โ€

โ€œI wanted to congratulate my favorite nephew.โ€ Ivanโ€™s smile tightened. I didnโ€™t bother pointing out I was hisย onlyย nephew. โ€œAva, dear, did you know youโ€™re sitting next to the new CEO of Archer Group?โ€

I betrayed no emotion while Avaโ€™s head whipped toward me, her eyes wide.

โ€œMy uncle graciously stepped aside,โ€ I said. I addressed Ivan. โ€œIโ€™m grateful for your tutelage and all the years youโ€™ve dedicated to the company, but now you can retire and indulge in fishing, crossword puzzles, TV dramasโ€ฆa life of leisure, just like you deserve.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ he said coldly. โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to it.โ€

It was all bullshit, this show we were putting on. My uncle didnโ€™t resign, though that would be the official story we fed to the press. Heโ€™d toppled from power thanks to the secret boardroom coup Iโ€™d spent the past week executing. Iโ€™d had to use more dirty tricks than usual to get it done in such a short time, but anger is the worldโ€™s greatest motivator.

I was now CEO of Archer Group, and Ivan was nothing. After I finished with him, he wouldnโ€™tย haveย anything, either. โ€œCongratulations. Thatโ€™s amazing.โ€ Ava looked genuinely

happy for me, but she also sounded confused and a little hurt, probably because I hadnโ€™t mentioned something so huge to her. Then again, the changeover hadnโ€™t been official until yesterday afternoon. No doubt the board notified Ivan, and heโ€™d driven here first thing in the morning, intent on reaming me out.

He kept his gaze fixed on me as he said, โ€œYou and Ava should come visit sometime. Iโ€™m just an old man with few friends, and I donโ€™t like leaving the house much.โ€ He chuckled lightly. โ€œIโ€™m a bit paranoid about security, you see. I have cameras all overโ€”my office, the kitchen, the library. I donโ€™t usually review all the footage, butโ€”โ€ He took a sip of his tea. โ€œWhatโ€™s a man with too much free time supposed to do?โ€

I picked up on the unspoken implications immediately.

Shit. How had I overlooked the cameras in the library? I had already disabled the ones in his bedroom and office, cleverly resetting them to hide any suspicious gaps. But my uncle had never installed cameras in the other rooms before. He must have checked the feeds after hearing about the coup.

Heโ€™d become more paranoid while Iโ€™d grown careless. I wouldnโ€™t let that happen again.

Ivan and I locked eyes. The jig was up. He knew Iโ€™d discovered the letters between him and my motherโ€”the ones where he professed his love and urged her to leave my father, the ones she had rejected until his pleas turned aggressive, forcing her to threaten him with a restraining orderโ€ฆthe letters where he vowed she would regret spurning him.

With that revelation, everything else fell into placeโ€”why my father and Ivan had fallen out, how the burglars seemed to know so much about our family, and why my uncle sometimes wore a strange expression when we discussed my parents. Iโ€™d always known how narcissistic he could be, and my motherโ€™s rejection must have hit him hard.

โ€”hard enough that heโ€™d plot his own brotherโ€™s death.

That didnโ€™t explain why he chose Michael Chen as the scapegoat, but Iโ€™d figure it out. I wouldnโ€™t stop until Iโ€™d peeled back every layer of Ivanโ€™s deception and strangled him with them.

I now understood how Ava felt. Iโ€™d been lied to most of my life too, only my reaction was far less benign than hers.

โ€œUm, sure.โ€ Ava glanced at me. โ€œWeโ€™ll visit someday.โ€

Yes. Over my dead body. Or, to be more accurate, my uncleโ€™s dead body.

โ€œExcellent.โ€ Ivan set his empty mug on the table. โ€œWell, I think Iโ€™ve overstayed my welcome. Iโ€™ll leave you kids alone. Alex, Iโ€™m sure weโ€™ll talk soon.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure we will,โ€ I drawled.

After he left, Ava and I sat in silence, eyeing each other warily. I wanted to pull her to me, kiss her and reassure her, but everything had gotten so fucking complicated. Not to mention, she still didnโ€™t know the truth about me and what I did.

She wonโ€™t find out.ย The only other person who knew was my uncle, and he would be out of the picture soon.

A better person would tell her the truth, but Iโ€™d rather be the villain with her by my side than the hero who risked losing her because of a misguided sense of morality.

What she doesnโ€™t know wonโ€™t hurt her.

โ€œYour uncle is not what I expected,โ€ she finally said. โ€œHeโ€™s veryโ€ฆslick.โ€

That pulled a small smile out of me. She didnโ€™t like him, either.ย Atta girl.

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me about your promotion?โ€ she asked. โ€œThatโ€™s huge news! We shouldโ€™ve celebrated or something.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t official until yesterday. Thought Iโ€™d announce it as a Christmas surprise.โ€ That was partly true.

Ava sighed, her expression growing sad. โ€œI miss you, Alex.โ€

God, this girl. She had no clue what she did to me. โ€œI miss you too, Sunshine.โ€ I opened my arms, and she climbed into my lap, wrapping her arms around my neck. I breathed in her scent, my heart aching. I wanted to keep her here, safe and cherished, forever. Fuck the rest of the world. It could burn for all I cared.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to fight, butโ€ฆโ€ Her bottom lip disappeared between her teeth. โ€œYouย haveย been acting strange lately. If something is wrong, you know you can tell me and weโ€™ll figure it out together, right?โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ How was she so amazing? Anyone whoโ€™d gone through what she had wouldโ€™ve locked themselves away from the rest of the world by now, but not Ava. She was always thinking of others.

I didnโ€™t deserve her.

โ€œIs it because I told you Iโ€”โ€ She paused, pink blossoming on her cheeks. โ€œI loved you?โ€

โ€œOf course not.โ€ I tightened my hold and kissed her. โ€œYou know Iโ€™d do anything for you.โ€

โ€œOkay, because you started acting weird right afterโ€ฆโ€ โ€œItโ€™s work,โ€ I lied. โ€œIโ€™ve been stressed about the CEO

transition.โ€ Also partly true.

It was a testament to Avaโ€™s trust that she took my words at face value. โ€œYouโ€™ll be a great CEO.โ€ She brushed her lips over a sensitive spot on my neck, and my cock jumped with interest. I hadnโ€™t touched her in a week, and I was dying to tie her down and have my way with her. โ€œNow, how about we alleviate that stressโ€ฆโ€

I responded with a wicked grin. โ€œI like the way you think.โ€

But as I carried her upstairs and fucked her in every position until she couldnโ€™t scream anymore, the sense of impending doom hovering over me remained.
