Chapter no 44 – CHRISTIAN

Twisted Lies (Twisted, #4)

Harper Securityโ€™s annual poker tournament took place in

the companyโ€™s multipurpose room, which had been transformed into a mini-casino with an open bar and half a dozen poker tables.

It was usually restricted to staff only. This year, I broke my own rule and invited Rhys, who was in town without Bridget for once for some diplomatic event, and Alex, as a thank you for keeping an eye on things for me while I was in Italy. Josh was invited by default since heโ€™d insisted on tagging along when he found out Alex would be attending.

I let him. I had too much other shit to worry about than his delusion that I was trying to steal his best friend.

The four of us sat at a table by the bar. The air was alive with the sounds of laughter, clinking glasses, and shu๏ฌ„ing decks, but the merriment did nothing to lighten my black mood.

โ€œHow many poker tournaments have you attended in the past?โ€ Josh asked Alex suspiciously.

Exasperation filled Alexโ€™s face. โ€œI told you, this is my first one.โ€

โ€œJust making sure.โ€ Josh plucked a card from his deck and tossed it on the table. King of hearts. โ€œSince youโ€™d playedย dozens of chess matchesย withย himโ€โ€”he jerked a

thumb at meโ€”โ€œand I didnโ€™t know about it for literally

years.โ€

Alex sighed.

โ€œIf you keep asking the same question over and over again, you can leave,โ€ I said icily. I didnโ€™t have time for Joshโ€™s bullshit.

โ€œSomeoneโ€™s moody.โ€ He raised an eyebrow. โ€œIs it because Stella broke up with you?โ€

My jaw flexed while Alex and Rhys hid their smirks behind their cards.

Iโ€™d done a decent job of not thinking about Stella tonight until Josh fucking Chen brought her up.

You canโ€™t kill a guest,ย a voice in my head reminded me. Actually, I could do whatever the fuck I wanted, but then

Iโ€™d have to deal with Alex. I also assumed Stella wouldnโ€™t be too happy about me murdering her best friendโ€™s brother.

โ€œI am not moody.ย Youย are simply annoying.โ€

I didnโ€™t know what Stella told her friends about us, but since sheโ€™d moved into Alex and Avaโ€™s house, it was obvious we werenโ€™t together anymore.

Josh shrugged. โ€œPerhaps, but at least Iโ€™m not single.โ€ My hand twitched toward my gun.

โ€œKeep provoking him, and heโ€™ll kill you.โ€ Rhys knew me too well. Heโ€™d been quiet most of the night, but humor lit his eyes when he looked at me.

โ€œIs something funny?โ€ I tossed out a card without looking at it.

โ€œAs a matter of fact, yes. Christian Harper moping over a girl,โ€ he drawled. โ€œNever thought Iโ€™d see the day.โ€

A migraine gathered behind my temple.

โ€œIโ€™m notย moping.โ€ย It took all my willpower not to punch the shit-eating grin off his face. โ€œI donโ€™tย mope.โ€

What Iโ€™d been doing the past few weeks wasnโ€™t moping.

It wasโ€ฆprocessing.

โ€œThatโ€™s not what Alex said.โ€ As usual, Josh piped up even though the conversation had nothing to do with him. โ€œHe

said you showed up to his house in tears the day Stella moved in.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t in fucking tears!โ€

The room quieted as every head swiveled in my direction.

I saw Brockโ€™s mouth drop and Kageโ€™s eyebrows fly up out of the corner of my eye.

I never yelled.

Not when Iโ€™d found out aboutย Magdaโ€™s theft, and not when shit went sideways at work. But itโ€™d been a hellish two weeks, and Iโ€™d bled the database of people to fuck with when I had a bad day dry.

There were only so many computers I could hack into before it lost its luster.

I wouldโ€™ve put more effort into creating a new list of names if I thought it would help, but it wouldnโ€™t.

I didnโ€™t need more people to fuck with. I needed Stella.

โ€œOh. I mustโ€™ve remembered wrong,โ€ Alex said mildly.

If I didnโ€™t know better, I couldโ€™ve sworn that was laughter in his eyes.

โ€œRemember when you gave me shit after the Bridget situation?โ€ Rhys was practically in schadenfreude, that bastard. โ€œYou said love is, and I quote,ย tedious, boring, and utterly unnecessary. People in love are the most insufferable on the planet.โ€ His grin widened. โ€œWant to take that back?โ€

My teeth ground in irritation.

โ€œItโ€™s deeply concerning that you can quote me word for word. Find a new hobby, Larsen. Obsessing over me isnโ€™t healthy.โ€ I pushed back my chair, too aggravated to sit any longer.

โ€œWhere are you going? Itโ€™s your turn!โ€ Josh protested. โ€œWeโ€™re in the middle of a game!โ€

I ignored him and walked off with Rhysโ€™s laughter at my back and irritation flickering through my veins.

Iย hadย said those things heโ€™d quoted. Now I was one of those insufferable idiots, pining after the only woman whoโ€™d ever broken my heart.

Karma was an even bigger bitch than fate.

I entered the kitchen and poured myself another drink. It was only my second of the night. Iโ€™d set the trap for the traitor earlier, but I needed to keep my head clear just in case.

Four suspects. Four different pieces of information Iโ€™d casually slipped into a conversation about how Iโ€™d developed a new device that made Scylla look like childโ€™s play.

The traitor wouldnโ€™t be able to resist leaking that information to Sentinel. Once they did, I only had to look at the details of what was leaked to pinpoint the rat.

It was a simple trap, but it worked every time. Iโ€™d just needed to get all the suspects in one room so I could have the conversations without raising suspicion. My men all knew I didnโ€™t discuss these things over the phone.

And if the traitor was who I thought it wasโ€ฆ I drained my glass.

My life was going to shit, and alcohol was the only thing that made me feel better these days.

That and the letters.

My mind flashed to my desk drawer.

โ€œHey.โ€ Rhysโ€™s gruff voice dragged me back to the kitchen. โ€œYou good?โ€

โ€œNever been better.โ€ The acerbic bite of my words strained the air.

He leaned against the counter and crossed his arms. His eyes moved from the tight set of my jaw to my empty glass and back again.

His earlier laughter faded, replaced with sympathy. โ€œYouโ€™ve got it bad.โ€

I didnโ€™t answer.

โ€œHow much did you fuck up?โ€ His eyebrows rose when I remained silent. โ€œThat much, huh?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s complicated.โ€

โ€œThese things always are.โ€ Rhys sighed. โ€œWhatever you did, itโ€™s probably not as bad as you think. Stella is one of the nicest people I know. Sheโ€™ll forgive you. She just needs time.โ€

Perhaps. But privacy was one of the most important things to Stella, and Iโ€™d crossed so far over that line I couldnโ€™t see it.

Her stalker had terrorized her for months, and the fact that I reminded her even a little of the bastardโ€ฆ

The alcohol churned in my stomach.

โ€œRhys Larsen giving relationship advice. Hell mustโ€™ve frozen over.โ€ I brushed over his statement for a safer topic.

Rhys snorted. โ€œIt froze the day you uttered the wordย loveย in a non-demeaning way.โ€ He straightened and clapped his hand on my back. โ€œIf Volkov can get his girl back after a year, thereโ€™s hope for you. Just donโ€™t fuck it up again.โ€

I poured myself another drink after he left and drank it alone in the company kitchen.

My life really had gone to shit.
