Part 2 – Chapter no 49: BRIDGET

Twisted Games (Twisted, #2)

We spent the rest of the day and night in my room, only

surfacing for food, but the next morning, reality intruded, and I was forced to extricate myself from Rhysโ€™s arms.

As high as I was riding from our victory, I had one big issue left to deal with. Iโ€™d waited until after the vote because I couldnโ€™t afford to be distracted before then, but it was time to face it once and for all.

Rhys stayed in the bedroom while I waited for my guest in the sitting room.

I heard a knock before Mikaela poked her head in. โ€œYou wanted to see me?โ€

โ€œYes. Please, sit.โ€

She walked in and plopped into the seat next to me. โ€œIโ€™ve beenย dyingย to talk to you, but you didnโ€™t answer my calls yesterday. I assume you wereโ€ฆbusy,ย but oh my god, the vote! We have to celebrate! Thatโ€™s amaโ€”โ€

โ€œWhy did you leak the photos of me to the press?โ€ I skipped the buildup and got straight to the point. I couldnโ€™t stomach small talk with the proverbial black cloud hanging over us.

I kept my voice neutral, but I dug my nails so deep into the couch cushion they left tiny indentations.

I hadnโ€™t wanted to believe it when Rhys told me. Part of me still hoped he was wrong. But Mikaelaโ€™s pale face and

panicked eyes told me all I needed to know.

It was true.

Betrayal stabbed at me with sharp talons, puncturing my previously cold calm.

I didnโ€™t have a lot of friends in Eldorra. I had acquaintances and people who sucked up to me because of my title, but no realย friends.ย Mikaela had been the one constant by my side, and Iโ€™d trusted her.

โ€œIโ€ฆI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about,โ€ Mikaela said, avoiding my eyes.

โ€œRhysโ€™s old company traced the photos back toย yourย IP address.โ€ Rhysโ€™s old boss Christian was apparently a computer genius, and Rhys had asked him to help find the leakerโ€™s identity. Iโ€™d known for weeks Mikaela could be the culprit, and Iโ€™d had to pretend nothing was wrong until I confronted her.

If the royal thing didnโ€™t work out, I might have a second calling as an actress.

Mikaela opened her mouth, closed it, then opened it again. โ€œI thought I was helping you,โ€ she said weakly. โ€œShe told me it would help.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

The talons of betrayal dug deeper.

Christian had found someโ€ฆinteresting text messages when heโ€™d looked into Mikaelaโ€™s correspondence withย The Daily Tea,ย and they had thrown me for as much of a loop as the discovery Mikaela was technically the leaker.

The fact it hadnโ€™t been Mikaelaโ€™s idea didnโ€™t lessen the sting. She shouldโ€™ve known better.

I heard another knock.

โ€œCome in.โ€ I didnโ€™t take my eyes off Mikaela, who looked like she wanted to sink into the couch and never come back up.

Elin walked in, sleek and polished in her white Escada suit and three-inch pumps. Her eyes flicked over Mikaela

before settling on me. โ€œYou requested to see me, Your Highness.โ€

โ€œYes. We were discussing the leaked photos of Rhys and me.โ€ I finally tore my gaze away from my friendโ€”ex-friend

โ€”and met Elinโ€™s cool blue one. โ€œMight you know anything about that?โ€

Elin wasnโ€™t dumb. She picked up on my insinuation immediately, but to her credit, she didnโ€™t feign ignorance or make excuses.

โ€œI did it to help you, Your Highness,โ€ she said after only one missed beat.

โ€œBy leakingย private photosย of me? How was that supposed to help?โ€

โ€œThey were not private photos.โ€ Annoyance crept into her tone. โ€œThey were perfectly innocent photos framed in a suggestive manner. I wouldโ€™ve never leaked truly incriminating images. But if I hadnโ€™t done that, you and Mr. Larsen wouldโ€™ve continued carrying on your reckless actions, and something more scandalousย wouldโ€™veย popped up. It was only a matter of time. Donโ€™t think I didnโ€™t notice what you two tried to hide beneath my nose. I didnโ€™t hold this job for so long by being oblivious.โ€

Dammit.ย I shouldโ€™ve known Elin would catch onto our affair.

She was right. Weย hadย been reckless, too caught up in our honeymoon phase to take the usual precautions. But that didnโ€™t make what she did right.

โ€œAnd the video?โ€

Iโ€™d finally told Rhys about the video from Nikolaiโ€™s reception a few weeks ago. Heโ€™d been upset I kept it a secret for so long, but since nothing had come of it, heโ€™d calmed down after, oh, five days. He had, however, also asked Christian to look into whoโ€™d sent it, and when I learned Elin was behind the video as well, Iโ€™d nearly fallen out of my seat.

The surprises never stopped coming.

Mikaelaโ€™s eyes bounced between me and Elin. โ€œWhat video?โ€

We ignored her, too locked in our stare down.

โ€œItโ€™s a crime to plant cameras in a private residence,โ€ I said. โ€œEspecially a privateย royalย residence.โ€

โ€œPrince Nikolai knew about the cameras.โ€ Elin didnโ€™t so much as blink. โ€œThe security chief convinced him to install secret surveillance while the house was under renovation. Too many contractors going in and out. It was a precautionary measure.โ€

I paused, absorbing the information, before I said, โ€œBlackmail is also illegal.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t blackmail you, nor would I ever do so.โ€ Elinโ€™s brows drew into a tight frown. โ€œI sent you the video hoping it would prompt you to break off your relationship with Mr. Larsen. When you didnโ€™t, I had to leak the pictures.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™tย haveย to do anything. You couldโ€™ve talked to me about it first,โ€ I said coldly. โ€œFor a communications secretary, youโ€™re not great at communicating.โ€

โ€œIt wouldnโ€™t have changed a thing. Youโ€™re stubborn, Your Highness. You wouldโ€™ve told me you were ending things and gone right back to him. I had to force your hand. Plus,ย The Daily Teaย reporter we sent the photos to had already been snooping around, hoping to find dirt. Security found him trespassing on the grounds. He was quite persistent, that one, almost like he has a personal grudge.โ€ Elin tilted her head. โ€œHans Nielsen, formerly ofย The National Express.ย Ring a bell?โ€

Several. Hans was the paparazzo whose camera Rhys had destroyed in the cemetery last year. Apparently, heโ€™d moved up the career ladderย andย held a grudge.

I flashed back to a few weeks ago, when Rhys told me he suspected someone had snooped around his guesthouse while heโ€™d been living there. I bet it was Hans, considering it happened before Rhys and I had gotten together and Elin hired a photographer to trail us.

I didnโ€™t tell Elin any of that, though.

โ€œRegardless, the pictures satisfied him and kept him from digging further,โ€ Elin said when I didnโ€™t respond. โ€œI must say, in hindsight, your press conference was inspired, and you and Mr. Larsen made it work. Yesterdayโ€™s vote was a big win, so no harm, no foul.โ€

Funny she called the press conference inspiredย now

when sheโ€™d thrown a massive fit over it.

โ€œNo harm, no foul?โ€ I repeated. โ€œElin, you went behind my back, created a scandal, and dragged Mikaela into it!โ€

Mikaela, whoโ€™d been watching the rapid-fire exchange between us with wide eyes, lowered her head.

โ€œI needed a go-between. I couldnโ€™t have the photos traced back to me.โ€ Elin heaved a deep sigh. โ€œHonestly, Your Highness, it all worked out. I fed the press a smaller scandal so they wouldnโ€™t stumble onto a larger one. I was protecting the royal family. That has always been my number one goal.โ€

โ€œPerhaps.โ€ I steeled my spine. โ€œI appreciate your service to the family over the years, but Iโ€™m afraid itโ€™s time we part ways.โ€

Mikaela squeaked while the color leached from Elinโ€™s face.

โ€œYouโ€™reย firingย me? You canโ€™t fire me. His Majestyโ€”โ€ โ€œHas given me the authority to make whatever staffing

changes I see fit,โ€ I finished. I pressed my hands tight against my thighs to keep from shaking. Elin was one of the palaceโ€™s longest-serving employees, and Iโ€™d always been slightly terrified of her. But while she was great at the external part of her job, I needed someone who workedย withย me, not someone who snuck around behind my back and tried to dictate my actions. โ€œYou stepped over the line, and you lost our trust. Mineย andย the kingโ€™s.โ€

Elin clutched her phone, her knuckles whiter than her suit. Finally, she said, โ€œAs you wish. Iโ€™ll have my desk cleared out by the end of the week.โ€ A muscle twitched

beneath her eye, but otherwise, she showed no emotion. โ€œIs there anything else, Your Highness?โ€

Brisk and efficient to the end.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said, feeling strangely melancholy. Elin and I had never been close, but it was the end of an era. โ€œYouโ€™re dismissed.โ€

She gave me a tight nod and walked out. She wasnโ€™t one for dramatics, and she knew me well enough to know when Iโ€™d set my mind on something.

โ€œYou too,โ€ I told Mikaela. โ€œBridget, I swearโ€”โ€

โ€œI need to think things through.โ€ Maybe I would forgive her one day, but her betrayal was still fresh and nothing she said right now would penetrate the hurt. โ€œI donโ€™t know how long thatโ€™s going to take, but I need time.โ€

โ€œFair enough.โ€ Her chin wobbled. โ€œI reallyย wasย trying to help. Elin was so convincing. I didnโ€™t believe her at first when she said you and Rhys had something going on. But then I thought about the way you looked at each other, and that time you took so long to answer the door at your officeโ€ฆit all made sense. She said you would get in huge trouble ifโ€”โ€

โ€œMikaela, please.โ€ I pressed my fingers to my forehead. It hurt almost as much as my heart. If I were old Bridget, perhaps I wouldโ€™ve let what she did slide, but I couldnโ€™t afford to let things slide anymore. I needed people I could trust around me. โ€œNot right now.โ€

Mikaela swallowed hard, her freckles stark against her pale skin, but she left without trying to make excuses again.

I expelled a sharp breath. The conversation had been shorter but harder than Iโ€™d expected, even after weeks of mental preparation.

I supposed nothing could fully prepare someone for firing one of their longest-serving employees and saying

goodbye to one of their oldest friends in the span of half an hour.

I heard Rhys come up behind me. He didnโ€™t speak. He just swept his palms over my shoulders and massaged the muscles with his thumbs.

โ€œIโ€™d hoped you were wrong.โ€ I stared at where Mikaela had sat, the sting of betrayal lingering on my skin.

โ€œPrincess, Iโ€™m never wrong.โ€

I released a half laugh, breaking some of the tension. โ€œI can think of a few instances when you were.โ€

โ€œYeah? Like when?โ€ Rhys challenged, a hint of amusement shining through.

I deepened my voice to mimic him. โ€œOne, I do not become personally involved in my clientsโ€™ lives. I am here to safeguard you from physical harm. That is all. I am not here to be your friend, confidant, or anything else. This ensures my judgment remains uncompromised.โ€ I reverted to my regular voice. โ€œHowโ€™d that work out for you, Mr. Larsen?โ€

He stopped massaging my shoulders and curled one hand around my throat. My pulse jumped as he lowered his head until his lips grazed my ear. โ€œMocking me? Do you need a refresher lesson already, Your Highness?โ€

Another piece of tension cracked.

โ€œMaybe. You might want to brush up on your teaching skills, Mr. Larsen,โ€ I said, playing along. โ€œThe lessons should last longer than a couple hours.โ€

Another laugh escaped when Rhys picked me up and swung me around until we faced each other, and my limbs wrapped around his neck and waist.

โ€œI knew you were trouble the moment I saw you.โ€ He squeezed my ass, hard, but those steel-gray eyes were soft as he examined me. โ€œYou did what you had to do, princess.โ€

Despite the gruff delivery, his single short sentence comforted me more an entire speech from someone else could.

โ€œI know.โ€ I rested my forehead against his, tightness ballooning in my chest. โ€œBut there are so few people I can turn to here, and I just lost two of them in one day.โ€

Too much was changing too fast. Some of it was good, some of it was nerve-wracking. Either way, I could barely keep up.

โ€œYou have me.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I repeated, softer this time.

โ€œGood. And for the recordโ€ฆโ€ Rhysโ€™s lips tilted up into a small smile. โ€œIโ€™ve never been happier to be wrong. Fuckย personally involved. Thatโ€™s not good enough. I want to be in your mind, in your heart, and in your fucking soul the way you are in mine. You and me, princessโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆAgainst the world,โ€ I finished. The tightness in my chest no longer had anything to do with Elin and Mikaela.

โ€œThatโ€™s right. Youโ€™re never alone, princess,โ€ he whispered against my mouth. โ€œRemember that.โ€

Rhys and I hadnโ€™t officially celebrated yesterdayโ€™s victory yet, but as he kissed me, I realized we didnโ€™t need champagne and fireworks. Weโ€™d always been best when it was just us, no pomp and circumstance required, and the best celebration wasย beingย together without having to hide. No shame, no guilt, no impending vote or tough conversations with soon-to-be ex-friends and ex-employees

hanging over our heads.

Just us.

That was all we needed.
