Chapter no 9

Twelve (The Naturals, #4.5)

โ€œSheโ€™s got to stop pulling stunts like this, Margot.โ€

Sloane knows that the security guardโ€™s usage of the wordย stuntย is a fairly

recent linguistic innovationโ€”late nineteenth century, origin unknown. Personally, she prefers the termsย exploitย andย feat.

โ€œWhat was it this time?โ€ Sloaneโ€™s mother is wearing a tight white T- shirt and jeans. Not her work clothes.

Interesting.ย Only 15 percent of Margot Tavishโ€™s personal wardrobe is white.

โ€œBlackjack tables.โ€ Security keeps the reply brief. Sloane should really learn his nameโ€”just like sheโ€™s already learned the placement of the three dozen security cameras in the Majesty, the blind spots, and how to work her way through the casino while minimizing the chances that sheโ€™ll show up on film. Itโ€™s harder to hide from the guards.

Harder, but not impossible.

โ€œShe was counting cards.โ€ Security does not sound happy about that. โ€œFor other players, Margot. Took three hands before we managed to escort her out.โ€

โ€œI was notย countingย anything.โ€ Sloane feels like that has to be clarified, even if clarifying it earns her a glare from an annoyed Margot. โ€œI was tracking the number and distribution of cards that had already been played in an effort to calculate the individual probabilities of the next card being favorable to either the player or the dealer.โ€

Security lets out what Sloane deeply suspects is an exasperated sigh. Sloane has a great deal of experience with other peopleโ€™s exasperation.

โ€œNo more, Margot. Kidโ€™s twelve, and sheโ€™s already persona non grata on the strip. I donโ€™t need to tell you how uncomfortable this could be if word works its way up the chain of command at the Majesty.โ€

Sloane knows the chain of command at the Majesty precisely as well as she knows the locations of the security cameras. That is, after all, the point.

To get the ownerโ€™s attention. To make himย seeย her.

Margot puts a hand on Sloaneโ€™s shoulder and pulls Sloaneโ€™s smaller body back against her own. Sloane calculates that there is a 12 percent chance this is a sign of affection. More likely, it is protectiveness.

Or possibly a warning.

โ€œIf Shaw says anything, you can tell him that itโ€™s notย myย fault sheโ€™s a genius.โ€

It is not Sloaneโ€™s motherโ€™s fault that Sloane is Sloane. That hurts, and it is not precisely true.

โ€œDue to genetic polymorphismโ€ฆโ€ That is as far as Sloane gets before the security guard takes a step forward toward her mother.

The gesture appears quite threatening.

โ€œIโ€™m trying to help you out here, Margot. If Shaw wanted your kid around, heโ€™d tell you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m his kid, too,โ€ Sloane says.

There is a long pause. A 12.35-second pause, by Sloaneโ€™s estimation. โ€œYour boss has always been very clear,โ€ Margot Tavish whispers finally,

โ€œabout what he does and does not want.โ€
