REMIND ME ONCEย again, Lord Synton. How did you say you two met? I canโt seem to recall, with all the threats and punching and missing teeth,โ Lady Katherine asked as their carriage rolled down the cobbled street.
After Envy had sent everyone home, heโd agreed to ride with Camilla and her friends. It seemed like the sort of thing a lovestruck fiancรฉ would do, but now he found himself trapped in a slew of questions. Lady Katherine ought to moonlight as a detective inspector.
โAfter I contacted Camilla regarding a commission, we began to exchange letters quite frequently,โ Envy lied smoothly.
โThis was before you arrived in Waverly Green?โ Lady Katherine didnโt believe him.
โYes. I asked Camilla to keep things quiet. I wanted to wait for the right time to announce my intentions. In fact, the ball tonight was supposed to act as the stage for my proposal, but then I realized I wanted to ask Camilla privately.โ
โThat sounds plausible, darling.โ Edwards nodded brusquely from the other seat. โIt was a rather extravagant party.โ
Lady Katherine kept her cool gaze locked on Envy.
โAnd when, exactly, did you give her a ring? Before you laid Harrington low?โ
โPlease, Kitty, leave it for now,โ Camilla said. โItโs been a long evening and my fiancรฉ is not the villain in this story. You saw the way Harrington acted. The manโs a knob. Synton has been in contact with me for weeks and
tonight I finally accepted his suit.โ
Envy looked his false fiancรฉe over, impressed thatโs sheโd given most of the truth without actually lying to her friend.
Lady Katherine seemed only partly mollified.
โI apologize for any uncivilized behavior,โ Envy said, trying to recall what might offend human sensibilities. โNo ladies ought to bear witness to such violent acts, but Harrington never should have tried to ruin Camilla. Heโs fortunate a few missing teeth and a broken rib are his only worries.โ
At that, both women exchanged secretive looks before bursting into laughter.
Edwards rolled his eyes. โMy lovely wife here was something of an underground pugilist before we married. They would hardly consider fighting a shock.โ
Humans never ceased to amaze.
Envy glanced from Edwards to Katherine to Camilla. Edwards was outwardly as stuffy as they came, yet he had a certain impish sparkle in his eye when speaking of his wife.
โDid you fight as well?โ Envy asked, staring at his artist.
โGoodness, no.โ Katherineโs eyes glittered with mirth as she cut in. โCamillaโs always been more of a lover. Sheโd attend to illustrate the fights, though. Do you also box, Lord Synton?โ
โSometimes,โ Envy admitted, thinking of Wrathโs legendary fighting pit. โMy brother has his own private ring. Sometimes he invites our whole family to participate.โ
The carriage rolled to a stop and Envy peered into the night. A large, towering house took up nearly an entire block.
โWelcome to Birchwood.โ Edwards nodded to the estate. โOur city home.โ
โI thought we were escorting Camilla to her residence?โ Envy said, trying to keep any frustration from his tone.
Heโd planned on circling back after theyโd dropped Camilla off. Now that sheโd come to her senses, she needed to start painting at once. Time was quickly ticking away.
Lady Katherine cut an amused look in his direction. โAnd not celebrate your joyful news? Donโt be silly. I cannot imagine sending you two off without toasting to your betrothal the way we ought to have done earlier. In
factโโshe grabbed Camillaโs handsโโI insist you both spend the night. Weโll have a big celebratory breakfast in your honor too.โ
Camilla squeezed her friendโs hands back and gave Envy a small, apologetic smile.
โThat sounds lovely, Kitty, thank you. Weโd be honored to have you host us for the night.โ
We would be no such thing.ย As if overhearing his internal thoughts, Camilla sent him a withering glare.
โAs my lovely fiancรฉe has stated, weโd be honored,โ Envy said tightly. โThank you for your thoughtfulness.โ
At least they could retire to their bedchamber early and then work on the painting.
Envy was already hatching a plan to have Alexei bring the supplies theyโd need when Katherine added, โWonderful. Weโll have separate rooms made up for you at once.โ
โSplendid,โ Envy said, grateful once again that he was now able to lie. Heโd simply sneak into Camillaโs chamber later.
A feat that would be irksome but not impossible. Or so he foolishly thoughtโฆ
