Chapter no 48 – THE OLโ€™ SWITCHEROO

Things We Never Got Over (Knockemout, #1)

Naomi

โ€œFiveโ€ฆfourโ€ฆthreeโ€ฆtwoโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWait! What makes you think Waylay knows where whatever the hell youโ€™re looking for is?โ€ I asked, desperate to keep Duncan

distracted from his deadly countdown. โ€œSheโ€™s just a child.โ€ โ€œMmmph mmm,โ€ Waylay grumbled, clearly offended.

Tina didnโ€™t say anything. Her eyes were glued to Duncan, and I was surprised he hadnโ€™t caught fire from the flames shooting out of them. The man had no idea the fuse heโ€™d just lit. I only hoped my sisterโ€™s impending explosion wouldnโ€™t get us all killed.

โ€œSimple addition. Tina took the flash drive, and it disappeared. Only one other person in that house. The little brat who likes technology and stealinโ€™ stuff.โ€

โ€œTina told you it disappeared?โ€

โ€œNo, Santy Claus did,โ€ Duncan said, rolling his eyes.

โ€œDid it ever occur to you that Tina is hiding the flash drive? Maybe she took it to cut you out of the deal.โ€

Both Tina and Duncan were now looking at me. I didnโ€™t know if Iโ€™d made things better or worse, but at least the gun was pointing at the floor. I dropped to my knees and attacked the knot on Waylayโ€™s wrist.

โ€œDonโ€™t listen to her,โ€ Tina said seeming to come back to life. โ€œSheโ€™s just doing what she used to do with our parents. Trying to manipulate you.โ€

โ€œI hate that shit,โ€ he said, raising the gun once again. โ€œNow where was I? Five?โ€

โ€œNine?โ€ I suggested weakly.

โ€œYou have to go to the bathroom,โ€ Tina announced to me. โ€œWhat?โ€

She gave me a hard look. โ€œYou have to go to the bathroom,โ€ she said again before turning back to Duncan. โ€œShe got her period. You donโ€™t want to shoot herย andย get period all over the place, do you, Dunc?โ€

โ€œGross. Donโ€™t tell me that woman shit,โ€ he complained, looking like he was about to vomit.

โ€œIโ€™ll take her to the bathroom, and weโ€™ll get the kid to talk about where she stashed the drive,โ€ she said with a pointed look in Waylayโ€™s direction. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll run out and get you some of that fried chicken that you like.โ€

Tina was definitely up to something. She had that crafty look on her face. And I definitely hadnโ€™t gotten my period. The Honky Tonk Code Red was two weeks out.

โ€œThatโ€™s more like it,โ€ Duncan said, satisfied that his woman was back in line. โ€œWasnโ€™t really gonna shoot you, T.โ€

โ€œI know youโ€™re under a lot of stress, baby,โ€ Tina said as she dragged me across the room toward a door marked RES OOM. โ€œTake a break. Drink a beer. Weโ€™ll be right back,โ€ she called over her shoulder.

She shoved me through the door into a bathroom that needed to be hosed down with a truckload of bleach.

โ€œTake your clothes off,โ€ she said when the door swung shut.

โ€œWhat? Tina, we canโ€™t leave Waylay alone with him. Heโ€™s insane.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m gettinโ€™ that. Now take off your goddamn clothes,โ€ she said, dropping her pants.

โ€œYouโ€™ve lost your mind. This isnโ€™t just another bad decision with horrible consequences. Youโ€™ve gone off the deep end, havenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œFor fuckโ€™s sake. Iโ€™m not trying to have incestual relations with you. This ainโ€™t a porno. Weโ€™re trading places. Heโ€™s not gonna letย youย walk out of here and get help. But heโ€™ll let me leave.โ€ She stripped her shirt off over her head and threw it in my direction. It hit me in the face.

โ€œThen leave and call the police,โ€ I hissed.

โ€œIโ€™m not leavinโ€™ Way with that stupid motherfucker.โ€ โ€œYou already abandoned her once!โ€

โ€œI left her withย you, smarty-pants. Knew youโ€™d take care of her until I got my score.โ€

I knew I shouldnโ€™t really take that as a compliment, but it was about as close as Tina got to giving them.

โ€œHeโ€™s fondling that Beretta like itโ€™s his dick and heโ€™s got a loaded PPK under the pizza box,โ€ she continued. โ€œYou know how to work one? Are you willing to shoot a man in the fucking balls and risk prison?โ€

โ€œNo and yes. If it gets Waylay out of here alive.โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m yes and yes. Pretty damn good shot too. So gimmie your damn skirt. And you go call the cops.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t you just send Knox or Nash a text and tell them where we are?โ€ โ€œPhoneโ€™s in the car,โ€ she said, dragging my skirt up her hips. โ€œDuncโ€™s

paranoid about being tracked by the government. Wonโ€™t let a cell phone near him here.โ€

I pulled her shirt over my head. โ€œFine. Okay. So whatโ€™s the plan then?โ€ โ€œWe go out there. Iโ€™m you but I give Waylay the code.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the code?โ€

โ€œI say โ€˜I read this article on the devastation of the rainforest,โ€™ and she knows itโ€™s code for get ready to run.โ€

I supposed it was Tinaโ€™s version of having a family fire drill. โ€œOkay.

Then what?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™ll make up the location of wherever she hid the thing. Duncโ€™ll send his guys to get it. Youโ€™ll leave to get celebratory chicken, but really youโ€™ll go down to the car and call 911.โ€

This didnโ€™t sound like a great plan. And I trusted my sister about as far as I could spit, which was not far at all. But I didnโ€™t have any other options. โ€œWhat will you do?โ€ I stalled. โ€œEven if you get past Duncan, there are men with guns outside.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll do whatever it takes to get Waylay out of here.โ€ I zipped her jeans and then stepped into her boots.

We looked at each other.

โ€œYour boobs are exploding out of my shirt,โ€ I observed. She reached for the roll of toilet paper. โ€œStuff.โ€

โ€œSeriously?โ€ I squeaked.

โ€œAs long as you and me have big tits, he wonโ€™t notice the difference.

Heโ€™s seven beers into his night.โ€

โ€œYou haveย gotย to get better taste in men,โ€ I complained as I shoved wads of toilet paper into my bra.

She shrugged. โ€œHeโ€™s not so bad when heโ€™s not drunk.โ€

โ€œYo! Ladies! Get your asses out here. Iโ€™m ready to shoot someone.โ€ โ€œHe sounds like a dreamboat,โ€ I grumbled.

โ€œTry not to walk like you got a stick up your ass,โ€ Tina hissed, shoving me toward the door.

โ€œTry to talk like you didnโ€™t have to cheat your way through the eighth grade.โ€

We returned to Bachelor Central, and I was relieved to see that Waylay was still alive and looking mutinous. Waylon was sitting next to her chair like a guard. His tail thumped when he saw me, and I worried that Duncan would notice.

Fortunately, he was too engrossed in a video game that apparently involved shooting scantily dressed women.

โ€œHa! Suck my barrel, bitch!โ€

Tina cleared her throat and looked at Waylay. โ€œI read this article on the devastation of the rainforest.โ€

Waylayโ€™s eyes widened above the duct tape. I nodded at her, and then at her mother. She blinked twice. Tina elbowed me.

โ€œOuch. I mean, quit blabbering about reading shit and go sit down over thereโ€ฆ by my kid,โ€ I said, tossing my hair over my shoulder and gesturing in Waylayโ€™s direction.

โ€œWaylay, honey sweetie pie, are you okay? Iโ€™m so sorry this is all happening. Itโ€™s all my fault probably because Iโ€™m so snobby and act like Iโ€™m better than everyone,โ€ Tina said, flopping down on the torn ottoman next to her daughter. Her knees spread wide, and I could see straight up my

โ€”er, herโ€”skirt.

Waylay rolled her eyes.

Behind me, I heard Duncan get to his feet. I was startled by a stinging slap on my butt. โ€œThat ass is lookinโ€™ mighty fine in those jeans tonight, Teen,โ€ he said before shotgunning the rest of his beer. He threw the can over his shoulder and belched.

โ€œI have theย bestย taste in men,โ€ I said, glaring at Tina.

โ€œHeh. Your sister has the same thong as you,โ€ Duncan said, pointing at Tinaโ€™s exposed crotch. โ€œYou guys really are twins.โ€

The man was an idiot. Unfortunately, he was an idiot with a gun. And I had no better options than Tinaโ€™s plan.

โ€œTiโ€”I mean, Naomi and I were talking,โ€ I began.

โ€œShe didnโ€™t get period all over the place in there, did she?โ€

I gritted my teeth. โ€œNo. Itโ€™s just the usual bodily fluids all over the floor and walls.โ€

Tina cleared her throat pointedly. Poor Waylon was looking back and forth between her and me like he was trying to puzzle out what was going on.

โ€œAnyway, your aunt who loves you very much and I talked, Waylay. We agreed that itโ€™s safe for you to tell Duncan where you hid the flash drive,โ€ I said.

โ€œYeah. You can tell me, kid. Iโ€™m trustworthy as shit,โ€ Duncan said, apparently forgetting that heโ€™d just threatened the lives of her mother and aunt only minutes ago.

โ€œJust tell him where you absconded it, and heโ€™ll send his men to go get it,โ€ Tina said, enunciating slowly.

That was definitelyย notย the right use of the word absconded.

Duncan nudged me with his elbow. โ€œGo take the tape off her mouth.โ€ I approached Waylay and leaned in. โ€œItโ€™s me, Naomi,โ€ I whispered.

She crossed her eyes as if to say โ€œDuh.โ€ Waylon stood up and licked my shin.

โ€œOh, now he likes you,โ€ Duncan said. โ€œDogs are as fickle as bitches. An hour ago, he couldnโ€™t stop growlinโ€™ at you, now he wants to hump your leg.โ€

I peeled back the corner of the tape.

โ€œSorry, kiddo,โ€ I whispered and yanked the tape free. โ€œSon of a goddamn bitch, ow!โ€ Waylay yelled.

I suddenly missed Knox from the depths of my soul.

โ€œTell me where the drive is, kid,โ€ Duncan said. The gun appeared in my peripheral vision as he advanced on us.

Waylay took what looked like a heroic breath. โ€œI hid it at the library in Knockemout. I taped it under a shelf in the historical fiction section.โ€

Smart, smart girl.ย If Duncan sent his men to break into the library, theyโ€™d essentially be breaking into a police station.

โ€œThank you for telling us. Iโ€™m very proud of you for your honesty and integrity,โ€ Tina said in what I assumed was her impression of me. She sounded British.

โ€œYouโ€™ll probably want to go get that now while the libraryโ€™s closed,โ€ I said to Duncan.

โ€œYeah maybe,โ€ he said, but his eyes were on Tina, and he looked thoughtful.

โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll go get that chicken,โ€ I said, edging toward the door. โ€œNot so fast.โ€

I felt cold metal at the base of my neck and froze. Tinaโ€™s plan officially sucked.

Waylon growled low. And that, too, made me miss Knox. Even if the man didnโ€™t love me, I knew he wouldnโ€™t hesitate to turn Duncanโ€™s face into an abstract painting.

โ€œMy whole life, everyoneโ€™s underestimated me,โ€ Duncan said conversationally. โ€œCalled me an idiot. Said I was stupid and dumb. So I went with it. Played the moron. People donโ€™t watch what theyโ€™re saying around a moron. And they donโ€™t try as hard to hide what theyโ€™re doing,ย Naomi.โ€

Crap.

โ€œYou two are the morons here. You actually think Iโ€™d fall for the olโ€™ switcheroo?โ€ he scoffed.

โ€œHow did you know?โ€ I asked, stalling for time. โ€œYour tits arenโ€™t crooked.โ€

โ€œYou mean Tinaโ€™s arenโ€™t.โ€

โ€œNo, dumbass. Tinaโ€™s are crooked. Yours arenโ€™t. Whoโ€™s the idiot now?โ€ He said this while gesturing with the gun.

Since it wasnโ€™t trained on me, I turned to face him.

Tina was frantically trying to work Waylayโ€™s bonds free.

Knee. Balls. Nose.

Knoxโ€™s instructions came back to me almost as if he were standing next to me.

โ€œI liked you, Tina. Really fucking liked you and now I hafta kill you. How do you think that makes me feel?โ€ He raised his gun, and I knew somewhere deep inside that this time he intended to use it.

Tina was looking at me hard. And for once in my life, I could read her mind.

โ€œHey, Duncan?โ€ I said.

The second his eyes were on me, everything moved in slow motion. Tina gave Waylayโ€™s chair a shove out of the line of fire and dove in the opposite direction, reaching for the pizza box.

โ€œThis!โ€ I grabbed his shoulders and rammed my knee up into his crotch.

The gun went off as he doubled over.

My ears rang. But I could still hear Knox in my head.

Nose.

Clinging to his shoulders, I brought my knee up again, and this time connected with his face.

I couldnโ€™t hear if there was a crunch, but judging by the way the man crumpled to the ground, Iโ€™d done it correctly.

Over the ringing in my ears, I thought I heard more shots. But they sounded like they were farther away. A siren too.

I left Duncan where he lay and sprinted to Waylay. Spinning her chair around, I was beyond relieved to see she was unharmed.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€ I asked, as my shaking fingers started to untie her. โ€œThat was awesome, Aunt Naomi!โ€ she said.

โ€œYou stupid piece of shit!โ€ Tina had the pizza gun trained on Duncan as he got to his hands and knees. โ€œYou were gonna shoot my daughter, my sister, andย me?โ€

โ€œMom, the cops are here,โ€ Waylay called as I finally freed her wrists.

Tina gave Duncan a kick to his mid-section. โ€œYouโ€™re lucky I donโ€™t have time to shoot you.โ€ Then she turned away from him. โ€œHere,โ€ she said, handing me the gun.

I held it at armโ€™s length and prayed it wouldnโ€™t go off. โ€œYouโ€™re not seriously running, are you?โ€ I asked.

It was an admittedly stupid question.

Of course my sister was running. Itโ€™s what she did after making a mess.

Tina grabbed a grungy black duffel bag off the floor and shoved several stacks of cash into it. Then she dumped the rest of the pizza on top, leaving the piece with the bullet hole.

โ€œIโ€™m allergic to cops,โ€ she said, hitching the strap over her shoulder, and looked at her daughter. โ€œSee ya around, kid.โ€

โ€œBye, Mom,โ€ Waylay said, waving with her freed hand. Behind me, Duncan groaned on the floor. Waylon growled.

โ€œBeen fun. Thanks for the skirt, Goody. Take care of my kid,โ€ she said with a little salute and then she disappeared out the window onto the fire escape.

The rope finally loosened and I threw it to the floor.

โ€œSheโ€™ll be back,โ€ Waylay predicted, standing up and shaking out her hands.

I didnโ€™t doubt it.

โ€œCome on. Letโ€™s get out of here,โ€ I said, putting the gun down and untying Waylonโ€™s leash from the leg of the desk. It wasnโ€™t just my hands that were shaking. Now it was my entire body. I wasnโ€™t going to feel safe until we were home at Lizaโ€™s. Maybe not even then.

The image of the gun pointing at my niece was permanently engraved in my brain. I doubted Iโ€™d ever sleep again.

โ€œAunt Naomi!โ€

The panic in Waylayโ€™s voice had me spinning around. Instinctively, I put myself between her and danger and right into Duncanโ€™s bruising grip.

His hand closed around my neck, cutting off my breath.

Blood poured from his nose. For the briefest moment, I felt a flicker of satisfaction that Iโ€™d done that. Iโ€™d stood up to him. But the moment was fleeting as blackness crept in along the edges of my vision.

โ€œYou ruined everything!โ€ he howled.

Time froze and solidified into a picture of the end as he brought the gun to my head.

This couldnโ€™t be how it ended. Not with Waylay watching. Not with help in the building.

Not without Knox.

I felt Waylayโ€™s arms come around me from behind. One last hug. I couldnโ€™t move or speak. I couldnโ€™t tell her to run. My world was going dark.

The door burst open, startling me and Duncan. He turned his head in time to see one of his men fall backwards into the room. Scratch that. He didnโ€™t fall. The man was thrown like a ragdoll.

With the last of my energy, I landed a kick to Duncanโ€™s shin.

โ€œWaylay run!โ€ someone ordered. The voice sounded so beautifully familiar, yet so far away.

Help was in the room. Waylay would be okay.

I slipped into the darkness.
