Chapter no 37

The Way I Used to Be

I WALK TO SCHOOLย on Monday, getting there way too early. I use the time to clean out my locker. I hear footsteps walking lightlyโ€”I know itโ€™s Mara without even needing to look. I pretend I donโ€™t see her, even though weโ€™re the only two people in the entire hall.

โ€œHi,โ€ she says, standing next to me. โ€œI stopped by your house. Your mom said you left early.โ€

I donโ€™t respond. Just continue rummaging through the papers that have gotten crammed into the bottom of my locker.

โ€œWhat, youโ€™re not talking to me now?โ€ she asks, her voice sharp.

I finally turn to face her.

โ€œThought Iโ€™d hear from you over the weekend,โ€ she continues. โ€œDidnโ€™t you get my message?โ€

โ€œYeah, I did,โ€ I finally answer.

โ€œOkay, so you were just never going to call me back?โ€

โ€œWell, that wasnโ€™t quite the apology I was looking forward to, Mara.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t think you owe me an apology too?โ€

We stand there opposite each other, our arms crossed, both waiting for the other to say it first.

โ€œOkay. I really am sorry about what I said,โ€ I admit. โ€œI donโ€™t think youโ€™re pathetic for being with Cameron. And I do want you to be happy, I promise. You justโ€”you really hurt my feelings.โ€

โ€œEdy, I know. I have felt so guilty about what I said to you, really, I didnโ€™t mean it the way it came out. Iโ€™m just worried about you, thatโ€™s all. And I am the biggest effing idiot in the entire universe for forgetting your birthday. I still canโ€™t believe I did that!โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s okay, really. I overreacted.โ€

โ€œNo. It was really, really shitty of me. Itโ€™s unforgivable.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not unforgivable,โ€ I tell her. โ€œWeโ€™re allowed one fight in seven years, right? How about I forgive you if you forgive me?โ€

โ€œDeal.โ€ She smiles.

โ€œSoย .ย .ย .โ€ I knew sheโ€™d been dying to tell me. โ€œHow was it?โ€

She takes a deep breath and sighs, falling against the lockers, gazing up at the ceiling dreamily. โ€œAmazing. It was so great, Edy, really. I never thought I would feel this way about anyone. Wait, I canโ€™t talk about this here. Letโ€™s get outta here before anyone sees usโ€”weโ€™ll go get breakfast, sign in late. My treat, okay?โ€

I slam my locker closed. โ€œHey, you had me at โ€˜Letโ€™s get outta here,โ€™โ€Šโ€ I say with a laugh. We run for the nearest exit.
