THE NEXT WEEK ATย school we walk down the hall, Mara alongside me with her nose ring and freshly dyed cranberry hair. It seems like sheโs grown ten inches taller. Something radiates from inside of her. I donโt know what, or how. But I wish some of whatever sheโs got would rub off on me.
After school on Thursday I wait for Mara at her locker so we can ride home together. But sheโs late. I pace up and down the hall, checking my phone. Iโm not paying attention when suddenly I feel someone ram into my shoulder like a linebacker, spinning me around. I look up quickly. My mouth opens to apologize, but I stop short. Because itโs Amanda glaring back at me.
โWatch it,โ she snarls, her eyes cutting through me.
I open my mouth again, searching for the words to put her in her place, but sheโs gone before I can think of anything. โFuck you,โ I mouth at her back.
I go sit down on the floor by Maraโs locker and watch as everyone filters out. Watch as the guysโjocks and geeks alikeโwatch me, wondering what the truth is, if I really am all the things theyโve heard. And the girls, they watch me too, like Iโm contagious, not really caring about the truth.
I text Mara:ย where r u?
She writes back right away:ย on my wayย .ย .ย . 5 mins.
But just as Iโm about to text her back I get another text. Itโs from a number I donโt recognize:ย Eden, still wanna party tomorrow?
Who is this?
Really???
I stand up and pace the hall, looking into the classrooms, making sure no oneโs lurking around watching me, fucking with me.
Yes, really. Who is this?
Troy
How did you get my number?
You gave it to me! LOL
???
You told me to let you know about the party at my house tomorrow night. You donโt remember??
I donโt remember giving that guy my number. I donโt remember anything about a party. I barely even remember that guy.
โEdy, sorry!โ Mara calls from down the hall. โI was talking to Cameron after class.โ
โThatโs okay, come here. Look at this,โ I tell her, holding my phone out. โItโs that guy, Troy, from the playground. Apparently I gave him my number. And apparently thereโs some kind of party tomorrow. I donโt know, I donโt remember any of this. Ringing any bells?โ
Mara takes the phone from me and writes:ย Hmmmย .ย .ย . donโt remember, LOL. But tell me about this partyย .ย .ย .ย ?
Cool. Iโll text you the address. Make sure you bring your friendย
OK
โThere,โ she says, handing me my phone back with a grin. โI kissed that guy, Alex, you know.โ
โYou tramp!โ I gasp. โI have no idea what I did with the other one, I guess.โ
โYou didnโt do anything,โ she says with a laugh, smacking me in the arm. โI honestly think you two just passed out on each other,โ she says quietly, even though thereโs no one else in the hall. She would never say it, but I know it still weirds her out that Iโve had sex. Or maybe itโs just knowing that people think Iโm a total slut, that people talk about me like Iโm a total slut. Especially when sheโs standing there next to me, not one.
โSo, whatโs the deal with Cameron, exactly?โ I ask her as we walk out to her car.
She throws her arms up in the air. โNo fucking idea, Edy. I swear to God! Heโs driving me crazy. Sometimes I think he likes me just as a friend. Other times I feel like heโs about to kiss me! I donโt know, I donโt know, I just donโt know!โ she yells.
โYeah, it kind of seemed like he liked youโthe way he was talking to you and looking at you at the piercing place. And how heโs had to come and find you every single day just to ask how your nose is doing. But then he doesnโt ask you out or anything?โ
โExactly!โ she shouts, swinging her car door open. โWell, Iโm done waiting for him. Heโs had almost two years to figure it outโtwo years!โ she tells me, looking across the hood of the car at me, this fire in her eyes.
โOkay,โ I tell her carefully. โThatโs good, Mara. You donโt have to wait for anyone.โ
โExactly!โ she says again, except this time with conviction as she slams her door shut.
โAre you okay to be driving?โ I ask her, confused by this sudden anger.
โOh, Iโm more than okayโIโm great!โ She laughs, shifting the car into drive.
Iโm not sure if I should be laughing or concerned, so I just quietly say, โOkay.โ
โMaybe I want to go out with this Alex person. See what he thinks of that!โ She looks at me when I donโt respond. โRight?โ
โRight. I guess. Butโโ I begin.
โBut what?โ she interrupts.
โBut it just seems like those guys are, I donโt know, probably fun to hang out with or whatever, but I mean, theyโre big-time stoners. Obviously not boyfriend material. For you.โ She looks at me like Iโm crushing all her dreams. โProbably. I mean, I donโt know them. Maybe not.โ
โBut weโll go to the party, right?โ
โSure.โ
โGood.โ
She smiles and turns on the radio.
