Chapter no 27

The Way I Used to Be

THE NEXT WEEK ATย school we walk down the hall, Mara alongside me with her nose ring and freshly dyed cranberry hair. It seems like sheโ€™s grown ten inches taller. Something radiates from inside of her. I donโ€™t know what, or how. But I wish some of whatever sheโ€™s got would rub off on me.

After school on Thursday I wait for Mara at her locker so we can ride home together. But sheโ€™s late. I pace up and down the hall, checking my phone. Iโ€™m not paying attention when suddenly I feel someone ram into my shoulder like a linebacker, spinning me around. I look up quickly. My mouth opens to apologize, but I stop short. Because itโ€™s Amanda glaring back at me.

โ€œWatch it,โ€ she snarls, her eyes cutting through me.

I open my mouth again, searching for the words to put her in her place, but sheโ€™s gone before I can think of anything. โ€œFuck you,โ€ I mouth at her back.

I go sit down on the floor by Maraโ€™s locker and watch as everyone filters out. Watch as the guysโ€”jocks and geeks alikeโ€”watch me, wondering what the truth is, if I really am all the things theyโ€™ve heard. And the girls, they watch me too, like Iโ€™m contagious, not really caring about the truth.

I text Mara:ย where r u?

She writes back right away:ย on my wayย .ย .ย . 5 mins.

But just as Iโ€™m about to text her back I get another text. Itโ€™s from a number I donโ€™t recognize:ย Eden, still wanna party tomorrow?

Who is this?

Really???

I stand up and pace the hall, looking into the classrooms, making sure no oneโ€™s lurking around watching me, fucking with me.

Yes, really. Who is this?

Troy

How did you get my number?

You gave it to me! LOL

???

You told me to let you know about the party at my house tomorrow night. You donโ€™t remember??

I donโ€™t remember giving that guy my number. I donโ€™t remember anything about a party. I barely even remember that guy.

โ€œEdy, sorry!โ€ Mara calls from down the hall. โ€œI was talking to Cameron after class.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s okay, come here. Look at this,โ€ I tell her, holding my phone out. โ€œItโ€™s that guy, Troy, from the playground. Apparently I gave him my number. And apparently thereโ€™s some kind of party tomorrow. I donโ€™t know, I donโ€™t remember any of this. Ringing any bells?โ€

Mara takes the phone from me and writes:ย Hmmmย .ย .ย . donโ€™t remember, LOL. But tell me about this partyย .ย .ย .ย ?

Cool. Iโ€™ll text you the address. Make sure you bring your friendย ๐Ÿ™‚

OK

โ€œThere,โ€ she says, handing me my phone back with a grin. โ€œI kissed that guy, Alex, you know.โ€

โ€œYou tramp!โ€ I gasp. โ€œI have no idea what I did with the other one, I guess.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t do anything,โ€ she says with a laugh, smacking me in the arm. โ€œI honestly think you two just passed out on each other,โ€ she says quietly, even though thereโ€™s no one else in the hall. She would never say it, but I know it still weirds her out that Iโ€™ve had sex. Or maybe itโ€™s just knowing that people think Iโ€™m a total slut, that people talk about me like Iโ€™m a total slut. Especially when sheโ€™s standing there next to me, not one.

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s the deal with Cameron, exactly?โ€ I ask her as we walk out to her car.

She throws her arms up in the air. โ€œNo fucking idea, Edy. I swear to God! Heโ€™s driving me crazy. Sometimes I think he likes me just as a friend. Other times I feel like heโ€™s about to kiss me! I donโ€™t know, I donโ€™t know, I just donโ€™t know!โ€ she yells.

โ€œYeah, it kind of seemed like he liked youโ€”the way he was talking to you and looking at you at the piercing place. And how heโ€™s had to come and find you every single day just to ask how your nose is doing. But then he doesnโ€™t ask you out or anything?โ€

โ€œExactly!โ€ she shouts, swinging her car door open. โ€œWell, Iโ€™m done waiting for him. Heโ€™s had almost two years to figure it outโ€”two years!โ€ she tells me, looking across the hood of the car at me, this fire in her eyes.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I tell her carefully. โ€œThatโ€™s good, Mara. You donโ€™t have to wait for anyone.โ€

โ€œExactly!โ€ she says again, except this time with conviction as she slams her door shut.

โ€œAre you okay to be driving?โ€ I ask her, confused by this sudden anger.

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m more than okayโ€”Iโ€™m great!โ€ She laughs, shifting the car into drive.

Iโ€™m not sure if I should be laughing or concerned, so I just quietly say, โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œMaybe I want to go out with this Alex person. See what he thinks of that!โ€ She looks at me when I donโ€™t respond. โ€œRight?โ€

โ€œRight. I guess. Butโ€”โ€ I begin.

โ€œBut what?โ€ she interrupts.

โ€œBut it just seems like those guys are, I donโ€™t know, probably fun to hang out with or whatever, but I mean, theyโ€™re big-time stoners. Obviously not boyfriend material. For you.โ€ She looks at me like Iโ€™m crushing all her dreams. โ€œProbably. I mean, I donโ€™t know them. Maybe not.โ€

โ€œBut weโ€™ll go to the party, right?โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

She smiles and turns on the radio.
