Chapter no 28

The Undead Next Door

Jean-Luc jolted awake, coughing as something foreign slid down his throat. Someone was grasping his chin, forcing his mouth open. He shoved the hand away.

โ€œIt worked!โ€ a womanโ€™s voice shouted.

He tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness knocked him back. Strong

hands caught him. His vision was blurred with a greenish tint. A foul taste tainted his tongue.ย Mon Dieu, poison. He struggled to get out of bed, but his body wouldnโ€™t respond.

โ€œโ€™Tis all right, Jean-Luc.โ€ The strong hand moved to his shoulder. โ€œIt takes a wee moment to adjust.โ€

He recognized Ianโ€™s voice, though the Scotsmanโ€™s face was still a greenish blur. โ€œWhat have you done?โ€

โ€œI gave ye some of the stay-awake drug.โ€ Ian showed him the vial of green liquid. โ€œThe sun hasna set.โ€

It was still daytime? Jean-Lucโ€™s vision cleared, and he noticed Fidelia hovering in the doorway of his bedroom. She was holding Bethany, whose

face was streaked with tears. His heart plummeted. His worst fearโ€” something had gone wrong while heโ€™d rested powerless in his death-sleep.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ This time his body obeyed his command to move. He slid to the edge of the bed, and realized he was still naked. โ€œTurn the little one away.โ€

Fidelia hugged Bethany, burying the little girlโ€™s face in her blouse, and Jean-Luc zoomed into his walk-in closet.

โ€œTell me what happened,โ€ he called out as he ripped the bandage off his right arm. The gunshot wound was gone. With vampire speed, he pulled on some pants and a shirt.

โ€œI woke Ian up,โ€ Fidelia confessed. โ€œI knew he had the drug in his purse

โ€”โ€

โ€œSporran,โ€ Ian grumbled.

โ€œAnd I poured some down his throat,โ€ Fidelia continued. โ€œI figured it

couldnโ€™t hurt, you know. He was already dead. When he woke up, we came here to wake you.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s Heather?โ€ Jean-Luc stuffed his feet into socks and a pair of black boots. His chest constricted when he realized they werenโ€™t answering. He ran from the closet. โ€œWhereโ€™s Heather?โ€

Bethany started crying.

Fideliaโ€™s face crumpled. โ€œBilly took her away. I think heโ€™s under Louieโ€™s control.โ€

Jean-Lucโ€™s heart wrenched.ย God, no. His worst fear. But at least it was still daytime. Lui would still be dead, so Heather was safe for the moment. He grabbed his belt with the leather scabbard and buckled it around his hips. โ€œHow long ago?โ€

โ€œAbout ten minutes.โ€ Fidelia shook her head. โ€œI didnโ€™t know what to do.

I wanted to follow them in your car, but I didnโ€™t have the keys, and I

couldnโ€™t leave Bethany here alone, and Ian was dead on the floorโ€”โ€

โ€œYou did right.โ€ Jean-Luc selected his best foil and slid it into the scabbard. โ€œWhereโ€™s Phil?โ€

โ€œBilly shot him and stuffed him into the trunk of his car.โ€

โ€œAll right.โ€ Jean-Luc joined Fidelia in the hallway. โ€œIan, if you have more of that drug, go wake up Robby and Phineas.โ€

โ€œAye.โ€ Ian zoomed past them to the guardroom. โ€œYou have to save her,โ€ Fidelia whispered.

โ€œI will.โ€ He rested a hand on her shoulder. โ€œYou did the right thing.โ€ Fidelia hung her head. โ€œI messed up. I shot at Billy, but I missed.โ€ โ€œI want my mama,โ€ Bethany wailed.

โ€œIโ€™ll bring her home,ย chรฉrie. Sheโ€™ll be all right.โ€ He wished he could believe that.

Bethany wrapped her arms around his neck. When he realized she wasnโ€™t going to let go, he settled her on his right hip, opposite his scabbard.

โ€œCome.โ€ He strode down the hall to the cellar kitchen. โ€œYou say Billy took her about ten minutes ago?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Fidelia followed.

โ€œHow long till sunset?โ€ He turned into the kitchen. It was small, consisting of a fridge, a microwave, a small dishwasher, and a cabinet of glasses.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Fidelia paused in the doorway. โ€œAbout five minutes, I guess.โ€

โ€œSo Billy has given himself fifteen minutes to take her to Lui.โ€ Jean-

Luc retrieved four bottles of synthetic blood from the fridge. โ€œLuiโ€™s hideout could be fairly close.โ€ He set Bethany on the counter, so he could unscrew the tops off the bottles.

โ€œI suppose.โ€ Fidelia grabbed one of the bottles to help him.

He set all four bottles in the microwave and turned it on. โ€œDid you see which way Billy went?โ€

โ€œI did!โ€ Bethany raised her hand. โ€œHe went down the driveway.โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s good.โ€ Jean-Luc smoothed back her strawberry-blond curls. โ€œThey turned onto the highway, headed south,โ€ Fidelia said. โ€œLast night

I dreamed about an old stone church. I think thatโ€™s where heโ€™s taking her.โ€

โ€œWhere was it?โ€ Jean-Luc removed a bottle from the microwave and guzzled down the warm blood.

โ€œIn the countryside.โ€ She leaned against the door-jamb, frowning. โ€œIt would be south of here.โ€ She straightened suddenly. โ€œThereโ€™s an old Spanish mission down the highway. Itโ€™s only about ten minutes away.โ€

Robby, Ian, and Phineas gathered around the doorway. They were all dressed and fully armed.

โ€œWe have a location.โ€ Jean-Luc handed them each a bottle. โ€œA Spanish mission, ten miles south.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Robby turned to Phineas. โ€œYeโ€™ll stay here with the ladies.โ€ โ€œOh, come on, man.โ€ Phineas grimaced. โ€œI want some real action.โ€ โ€œAnd ye may get it if Lui comes back here for more victims,โ€ Robby

muttered. โ€œYe could get more action here than ye can handle.โ€

โ€œI can do it.โ€ Phineas nodded. โ€œJust let me at that sucker. Heโ€™ll be sorry he ever messed with me.โ€

โ€œPhineas.โ€ Robby gave him a stern look. โ€œIf he comes here, the first thing ye do is send out a psychic message to us. We can teleport here in a second.โ€

โ€œGotcha.โ€ Phineas upended his bottle of blood and gulped it down. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. โ€œIโ€™ll protect the women with my life.โ€

โ€œAnd I have my guns,โ€ Fidelia added. โ€œWeโ€™ll be fine.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€ Jean-Luc set his empty bottle in the sink and gathered Bethany back into his arms.

They strode down the hall and up the stairs to the ground floor. โ€œLetโ€™s take the car.โ€ Jean-Luc stopped next to the security office. โ€œWe could run there just as fast,โ€ Ian protested.

โ€œJean-Lucโ€™s right.โ€ Robby opened the door and grabbed the keys off the hook. โ€œWe need to conserve our energy.โ€

โ€œCan you check the sun for us?โ€ Jean-Luc asked Fidelia. โ€œSure.โ€ Fidelia ran to the window next to the front door. โ€œโ€™Tis still up,โ€ Ian murmured. โ€œI can feel it.โ€

Fidelia peered through the blinds. โ€œThereโ€™s only a sliver left on the horizon.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Jean-Luc handed Bethany over to Phineas. โ€œHeโ€™ll take care of you till I bring your mother back.โ€

Bethany nodded.

Jean-Luc stepped back and drew his sword. He warmed up with some thrusts and lunges. His heart pounded, but not from exercise. He couldnโ€™t allow himself to think about how frightened Heather might be. Just the

thought brought bile to his throat. At least Lui was a sick enough bastard that heโ€™d take his time with her. The stay-awake drug had given them a few precious extra minutes to prepare, and those minutes might make all the difference.

Robby emerged from the security office with an extra sword in his right hand. โ€œWeโ€™ll need to check the car for explosives. Iโ€™ll look under the carriage. Ian, look under the bonnet.โ€

โ€œAye.โ€ Ian tightened the straps that held the sheath and claymore on his back.

โ€œIs it true,โ€ Robby asked, โ€œthat the sheriff tossed Phil into the trunk of his car?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Fidelia continued to peer out the window. โ€œI doubt Phil can help you very much. He was shot in the leg.โ€

Robby exchanged a look with Ian. โ€œโ€™Tis a full moon tonight.โ€ Ian nodded. โ€œGood. โ€™Twill give us another advantage.โ€ โ€œWhat advantage?โ€ Jean-Luc sheathed his sword.

โ€œThe sunโ€™s down!โ€ Fidelia threw open the door. โ€œGo!โ€

โ€œThe keys!โ€ Jean-Luc caught them, and zoomed out the door with Robby and Ian. He climbed behind the driver seat, and the second they told him it was safe, he started the engine. They jumped in, and he floored the accelerator. He turned south on the highway, then gained more speed.

After a few minutes, Robby held up a hand. โ€œPull over!โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Jean-Luc veered onto the shoulder and stomped on the brakes. โ€œListen,โ€ Robby whispered.

Jean-Luc heard a strange howling sound, coming from the south. โ€œWhat is that?โ€

โ€œFocus on it and teleport there now,โ€ Robby ordered. He and Ian wavered, then disappeared.

Jean-Luc ripped the keys from the ignition and concentrated on the sound. Everything went black.

This was no ordinary wolf. Heather had never seen one close up before, but she knew they didnโ€™t have red glowing eyes. This one had to be bigger than normal, too.

Billy lifted his pistol and took aim.

โ€œWait.โ€ Louie raised his hand. โ€œWe can always kill it later. I want to see if it will chew on her first.โ€

Heather gulped. Those jaws looked incredibly strong. And the teethโ€” very sharp. The wolf moved toward her. She pressed back against the wall.

It was limping, favoring a back leg. The fur was matted with something dark and shiny. As the wolf limped forward, it left a bloody paw print on

the stone floor.

Heather glanced at its eyes. The glow had faded, and the red was turning pale blue. It stopped in front of her and tilted its head like it was studying her. Maybe it was. The eyes looked intelligent. And somehow familiar.

It inched closer, its muzzle over her drawn-up knees. โ€œNo,โ€ she breathed, lifting a hand to ward it off.

It leaned forward and licked her palm.

With a gasp, she closed her hand. Her mind raced. The wounded leg. The screeching sound of metal being ripped. The sniffing for bombs. The familiar eyes.

โ€œPhil?โ€ she whispered. The wolf whimpered.

โ€œOh my God.โ€ She closed her eyes briefly against the sting of hot tears.

She wasnโ€™t alone. Phil was here to protect her.

Louie sighed. โ€œWhat a disappointing beast. Billy, kill it.โ€ Billy lifted his pistol.

Phil spun around, growling. And charged.

Billy pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. He backed up, frantically pulling the trigger over and over.

Phil knocked him down and snapped his jaws on Billyโ€™s arm. Heather grimaced. She didnโ€™t want Billy to die.

A loud howl reverberated through the room. Phil had pinned Billy to the floor and appeared to be enjoying his victory. He threw his massive head back and howled again.

โ€œDamned creature.โ€ Louie circled the altar, unbuttoning his long black coat. โ€œIโ€™ll take care of it myself.โ€ He whisked off his coat and tossed it on the table. It landed on Sasha.

Just then, two forms wavered before Heatherโ€™s eyes and became solid. She cried with relief. Robby already had a sword in his hand. Ian drew his claymore.

A third form appeared.

โ€œJean-Luc!โ€ Heather cried.

He glanced at her. โ€œThank God.โ€ He drew his foil and spotted Louie by the altar. He strode toward him. โ€œLetโ€™s finish this now.โ€

Louie sneered. โ€œAgreed.โ€ He vanished. โ€œNo!โ€ Jean-Luc shouted.

Louie suddenly appeared next to Heather. His left hand gripped her arm.

Good Lord, he meant to teleport away with her!

A dagger spun through the air and sliced Louieโ€™s arm before falling on the ground. He cried out and released her.

Heather grabbed the dagger, then scooted away. It must have come from Robby or Ian. She sawed at the ropes binding her ankles.

A warm nose nuzzled her shoulder, and she jumped. โ€œOh, itโ€™s you.โ€ Phil sat beside her. Her personal guard was back. โ€œGood boy.โ€

โ€œA sword, Robby!โ€ Jean-Luc yelled. He dropped his foil and kicked it toward Heather, then caught the sword Robby tossed him.

Heather scrambled to grab the foil, then froze as she saw Jean-Luc circling Louie. Oh God, this was it. The final showdown. Louie wielded a massive broadsword. No wonder Jean-Luc had tossed aside his foil.

Louie struck, the blade whistling past Jean-Lucโ€™s stomach. โ€œYou missed,โ€ Jean-Luc taunted as he jumped and floated to the ceiling.

Louie followed, levitating to match Jean-Lucโ€™s height. Jean-Luc brought his sword down with such force that Louie was sent flipping backward in midair. He crashed into a rafter before falling to the floor.

Jean-Luc landed gracefully beside Louieโ€™s sprawled form. He raised his sword, preparing for the killing blow, but Louie rolled and swung upward.

Jean-Luc leaped back. His shirt was torn, and a thin red line marked his pale skin where Louieโ€™s sword had grazed him.

Louie sprang to his feet, grinning. โ€œYouโ€™re pitiful. Iโ€™m growing tired of this game.โ€

Jean-Luc lunged forward. The swords clashed repeatedly. Heather glanced at Robby and Ian. They couldnโ€™t let Louie win. Ian hovered nearby, his claymore drawn and ready.

Robby had unsheathed his sword and approached Billy, placing a hand on his forehead.

Heatherโ€™s gaze darted between the two battles. The constant clang of swords filled her ears. Both Jean-Luc and Louie were panting heavily now.

Billy tensed and pulled away from Robby, cradling his wounded arm to his chest. He looked at Heather with remorseful eyes. โ€œWhat have I done? Iโ€™m so sorry.โ€

โ€œHeather, move!โ€ Jean-Luc yelled at her.

Move where? Then she realized what he was doing. Jean-Luc was driving Louie toward her and Phil. She scrambled away, and Robby grabbed her.

Jean-Luc continued to force Louie to retreat. Phil sat still and quiet.

When Louie was a few feet in front of Phil, the wolf let out a tremendous howl.

Louie jumped and glanced behind him. In that second, Jean-Luc stabbed him through the heart. Louie turned completely gray, then disintegrated into a pile of dust on the floor.

Jean-Luc stepped back, lowering his sword. He closed his eyes and let the sword clatter onto the floor. โ€œItโ€™s done,โ€ he whispered. He turned to Heather. โ€œWeโ€™re free.โ€

With a cry, she ran to him and threw her arms around his neck. He held her tight.

โ€œItโ€™s over,โ€ Heather whispered. โ€œItโ€™s over.โ€

He kissed her brow. โ€œYouโ€™re free now. You can have your old life back, if you want.โ€

She cradled his face with her hands. โ€œI want my new life with you.โ€ โ€œWe can do that, too.โ€ He squeezed her tight. โ€œIt was my worst fear. I

woke up to find you were in danger.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all right,โ€ she whispered. โ€œYou killed him. Louie will never torture you again.โ€

Robby walked over to retrieve his sword. โ€œWell done, Jean-Luc.โ€ He glanced around the chapel. โ€œIs everyone all right?โ€

Sasha moaned. She struggled to sit up, but fell back onto the table. โ€œSasha!โ€ Billy ran toward her. โ€œThank God youโ€™re all right.โ€

โ€œBilly.โ€ She stretched out a hand to him. โ€œI never meant to hurt anyone.

Please believe me.โ€

โ€œI believe you.โ€ Billy took her hand. โ€œHe controlled me, too. It was terrible. I was fighting it, but there was nothing I could do.โ€ He kissed her hand.

โ€œHe remembers everything,โ€ Robby whispered. โ€œI broke the hold Lui had on him, but I dinna erase his memory.โ€

Jean-Luc nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s probably for the best. It would be difficult to explain all this.โ€

โ€œSashaโ€™s lost too much blood,โ€ Heather whispered.

โ€œWeโ€™ll have Dr. Lee make another house call,โ€ Jean-Luc said. โ€œHe can give her a blood transfusion.โ€

โ€œShe wonโ€™t become a vampire?โ€ Heather asked.

โ€œNay,โ€ Robby replied. โ€œSheโ€™ll be fine. Her blood wasna completely drained. I just hope Dr. Lee can remove the bullet from Phil.โ€

Jean-Luc looked at the werewolf. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me about him?โ€ Robby shrugged. โ€œโ€™Tis a company secret.โ€

โ€œHow many are there like him?โ€ Heather asked.

Robbyโ€™s mouth quirked. โ€œIf I told ye, it wouldna be a secret.โ€ โ€œHe bit Billy,โ€ Heather said.

Robbyโ€™s smile faded.

โ€œBugger,โ€ Ian whispered. He gave Billy a worried look. โ€œOh no,โ€ Heather breathed. โ€œItโ€™s contagious?โ€

Robby nodded. โ€œAye.โ€

Heather winced. Poor Billy. She glanced at the altar. Billy was sitting on the table, holding Sasha in his arms. Well, heโ€™d finally gotten the girl he wanted. Hopefully, Sasha wouldnโ€™t mind a boyfriend who went furry every now and then.

โ€œIโ€™ll explain it to him later,โ€ Robby said. โ€œIan, go ahead and teleport them to the house. And call Dr. Lee.โ€

โ€œVerra well.โ€ Ian strode toward the wounded couple, and soon they all vanished.

Heather stepped back to look at Jean-Lucโ€™s wound. โ€œYou need to see Dr.

Lee, too.โ€

He shrugged. โ€œItโ€™s just a scratch.โ€

She snorted. โ€œThat scratch nearly gave me a heart attack. You have got to stop getting injured every night.โ€

He grinned. โ€œYouโ€™re cute when youโ€™re bossy.โ€ He pulled her closer and whispered in her ear, โ€œWeโ€™ll have to find some new positions that wonโ€™t strain my injury.โ€

She laughed.

Robby strolled over to the table and blew out the candles. โ€œIโ€™ll teleport back with Phil, and weโ€™ll be done.โ€ He glanced up at the choir loft. โ€œIs there something up there? I thought I heard something.โ€

โ€œProbably a tiny Texan mouse.โ€ Jean-Luc nuzzled Heatherโ€™s neck. โ€œI am a cockroach!โ€

Heather gasped. โ€œCody! I forgot he was there.โ€

Jean-Luc frowned. โ€œIโ€™m tempted to leave him there.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Heather protested. โ€œHe actually came in handy. Billy ran out of bullets, shooting at him. In a weird way, he saved Philโ€™s life.โ€

โ€œAll right. Iโ€™ll remove the command.โ€ Jean-Luc walked over to the choir loft and levitated. โ€œCockroach.โ€

โ€œYes, Master!โ€

Jean-Luc hovered in the air for a few minutes. Then he sank to the floor. โ€œItโ€™s done.โ€

โ€œWhat the hell?โ€ Cody yelled. โ€œHow did I get here?โ€

Jean-Luc gathered Heather in his arms. โ€œThere will be a little girl very happy to see you.โ€

Heatherโ€™s eyes filled with tears. โ€œThank you.โ€

Cody clambered down the stairs. โ€œWhat the hell is going on?โ€

โ€œI believe yeโ€™ll find the sheriffโ€™s car outside,โ€ Robby said. โ€œI suggest ye take it back to town.โ€

Cody noticed the giant wolf and backed toward the door. โ€œYou guys are crazy!โ€ He ran from the chapel.

Robby chuckled. โ€œCome on, Phil. Let me take ye home.โ€ He halted in midstep. โ€œOch, ye wee beastie.โ€

Heather grimaced. Phil had raised a leg and was dousing the pile of dust that had been Louie. โ€œOh, ick.โ€ How could she ever look Phil in the face

again?

Phil finished, then sat on his haunches. He gave them a wolfish grin, his long tongue lolling out.

With a laugh, Robby wrapped an arm around the furry beast. The two vanished.

โ€œOur turn.โ€ Jean-Luc smoothed a hand up Heatherโ€™s back. โ€œYou remember how to do this? You hold me tight.โ€

โ€œI remember.โ€ She wrapped her arms around his neck. His mouth twitched. โ€œAnd then you kiss me.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely.โ€ She pressed her mouth against his and let the world fade away.
