Chapter no 21

The Undead Next Door

Heather dashed up the stairs to the ground floor.ย Vampires?ย How could that be? But why would Jean-Luc lie about something so awful?ย I know you love me. His words pricked at her. No! She couldnโ€™t love a vampire. Vampires

were monsters who preyed on the innocent to survive.

She slammed the cellar door behind her and strode down the hallway. Vampires. In Texas. Maybe she should call Immigration. She rushed past the doors to the design studio. Good Lord, her boss was a vampire. And

fantastic in bed. She winced and tried to erase that last thought.

I know you love me.

Dammit, she was not going to fall in love with a blood-sucking fiend. A line from an old movie came back to torment her. It required a few sniffles and a thick country accent.ย I always fall for the wrong kind of man.

Yep, that was her. Sheโ€™d gone from a control-freak husband to a

vampire lover. At least a vampire couldnโ€™t control her during the day. He was dead. A giggle escaped her mouth. Good Lord, she was losing her mind.

She halted halfway across the showroom when the door to the security office swung open.

Robby exited and gave her a worried look. โ€œAre ye all right, lass?โ€

Vampire. She stepped back.

He frowned. โ€œDoona be afraid.โ€

Right. He was just a huge, hulking vampire with a sword on his back, a knife in his sock, and fangs in his mouth. She turned and ran up the grand staircase. As she crossed the catwalk, she noticed him standing in the showroom, watching her.

Dammit, she was not going to be afraid. She was at war with fear. She slipped inside her bedroom.

โ€œI have a pistol pointed at your ass,โ€ Fideliaโ€™s voice whispered in the dark.

โ€œItโ€™s me.โ€ Heather locked the door. โ€œWe need to talk. Keep your gun handy.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have my guns in bed. I was just bluffing.โ€

โ€œGet them.โ€ Heather fumbled across the room to the bathroom. โ€œAnd come in here. I donโ€™t want to wake Bethany.โ€

A minute later, Fidelia waddled into the room, her purse clutched to her chest.

Heather shut the bathroom door and turned on the light. โ€œWeโ€™re in big danger.โ€

โ€œI thought so.โ€ Fidelia dropped her heavy purse on the marble vanity.

Her hair shot out in different directions, and her voluminous hot-pink nightshirt boasted the wordsย Hot Stuff. โ€œThe cards have been warning me.โ€

Heather perched on the edge of the bathtub. An unfortunate memory flashed in her mind. Jean-Lucโ€™s bathtub had been incredible. And there was room in there for two. She shook the thought away. โ€œI snuck into the cellar to find out what they were hiding.โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ Fidelia lowered the toilet lid, then sat on it. โ€œWas the sex good?โ€

Heatherโ€™s jaw dropped. โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m psychic.โ€ Fidelia pointed at her. โ€œAnd your shirtโ€™s on wrong side out.โ€

Heather glanced down, and heat flooded her face. She quickly changed the subject. โ€œI discovered something important. I was right about Jean-Luc being centuries old. He was born in 1485.โ€

Fidelia nodded her head slowly. โ€œThat explains a lot. Thatโ€™s a lot of experience. He must have been good in bed.โ€

Heather scoffed. โ€œThat is quite beside the point.โ€ โ€œSo heย wasย good?โ€

โ€œFidelia, his eyes turned red. They were glowing.โ€

Her face paled. โ€œSanta Maria.โ€ She crossed herself quickly. โ€œDid you see the white gnashing teeth?โ€

โ€œNo, but he has them. Heโ€™s aย vampire.ย Theyโ€™re all vampires. Except Phil. And poor Pierre. Even Louie is a vampire.โ€

Fideliaโ€™s brown eyes widened. โ€œAre you sure? Did Juan-Luc confess?โ€ โ€œYes.โ€

She pressed her hands together, close to her mouth, whispered a prayer in Spanish, then crossed herself again. โ€œI have always sensed there wereโ€ฆ others, but I neverโ€”โ€ She stiffened. โ€œDid he bite you?โ€

โ€œNo. I never saw his fangs come out.โ€ Heather grimaced at the thought of ugly canines jutting from Jean-Lucโ€™s beautiful mouth.

Fidelia leaned forward to examine her neck. โ€œYou have no marks.โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t bite me,โ€ Heather insisted. โ€œHe said he was in complete control.โ€

โ€œControl, yes.โ€ Fidelia sat back, frowning. โ€œI have heard they would be very good at mind control. He could bite you and then wipe it from your memory.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think so. Jean-Luc said he doesnโ€™t allow any biting in his house.

They all drink blood from bottles.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Fideliaโ€™s dark brows lifted. โ€œThen none of these vampires attacked you?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œJuan-Luc didnโ€™t use mind control to force you to do things against your will?โ€

Heather shook her head, feeling her cheeks grow warm. Heโ€™d made her scream, but sheโ€™d done that willingly enough. โ€œI donโ€™t think he was controlling me. I was sorta out of control. I yelled at him and slapped him.โ€

โ€œDid he yell back?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Heather shifted her weight on the edge of the tub. โ€œHe asked me not to leave the house. Heโ€™sโ€ฆworried about our safety.โ€

Fidelia took a deep breath. โ€œLet me get this straight. He didnโ€™t attack you or bite you or control you at all?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œThen why were you yelling and slapping him?โ€

โ€œBecause theyโ€™reย vampires. Isnโ€™t that reason enough?โ€

Fidelia shrugged. โ€œAs far as I can tell, theyโ€™ve tried very hard to make us comfortable, and theyโ€™re serious about keeping us safe. They lost one of their own today.โ€

โ€œPierre was mortal.โ€

โ€œHe was their comrade, and they were upset by his death. It could have happened to any of them. Or to us. Weโ€™re all in danger.โ€

Heather sighed. โ€œSo you think we should stay here? Unite with theseโ€ฆ vampires against the common enemy?โ€

โ€œLouieโ€™s a vampire, no? I say our best protection is more vampires. We should definitely stay here.โ€

Heather nodded. โ€œI agree. But as soon as they kill Louie, weโ€™re leaving.โ€

โ€œAnd what about Juan-Luc? You like him, no?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t date a man who has survived for centuries by biting women and sucking their blood.โ€

โ€œI bet he gives one hell of a hickey.โ€ โ€œFidelia! The man is a monster.โ€

She reached for her purse. โ€œYou want me to shoot him? Iโ€™ll kill him tonight.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Heather jumped to her feet.

Fidelia gave her a knowing look. โ€œYou failed that test,ย chica.โ€ Heather gritted her teeth. โ€œItโ€™s not what you think.โ€

โ€œThat heโ€™s very good in bed?โ€

She sat with a huff. โ€œIt has nothing to do with attraction. I simply abhor violence in general.โ€

โ€œYou slapped him.โ€

โ€œI was upset. And I feel kinda bad about it now.โ€

Fidelia leaned forward on her elbows. โ€œWhen did he confess? Before or after the sex?โ€

โ€œAfter.โ€ Heather rubbed her brow. She was getting a headache.

โ€œAh. So that is why you slapped him. The bastard. He took his pleasure from you and satisfied his own needs before telling you the truth.โ€

A dull pain throbbed at Heatherโ€™s temple. โ€œActually, he never gotโ€”I mean, he spent the whole time pleasuring me.โ€

โ€œOh!โ€ Fideliaโ€™s eyes lit up. โ€œThat Juan-Luc. He isย muy macho.โ€

Heather sighed. Sheโ€™d had the biggest orgasm ever. Not that she ever intended to think about it again.

โ€œSo he never tried to bite you, and he didnโ€™t seek his own pleasure.โ€ Fidelia tilted her head, considering. โ€œThen why did he take you to bed?โ€

Heather swallowed hard. โ€œHe said he loves me.โ€ โ€œAh.ย Amor.โ€

Heather slumped. โ€œHe said heโ€™d waited five hundred years for me.โ€ โ€œMmm.ย Romantico.โ€

โ€œBut heโ€™s a vampire.โ€

Fidelia shrugged. โ€œNobodyโ€™s perfect. My second husbandโ€”he had six toes on one foot.โ€

โ€œThis is a little more serious than that. Jean-Luc is literally dead half the time.โ€

Fidelia nodded. โ€œFor most men, that would be an improvement.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m serious! I have to stay away from him. I want a normal life for me and Bethany. Weโ€™ll live here for the moment, but Iโ€™m going to avoid him at all costs.โ€

โ€œAll right,โ€ Fidelia agreed. โ€œYou must never talk to him, even if he is

muy romantico. And you must try not to think about how good the sex was. It was really good, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not helping. Whose side are you on?โ€

Fidelia patted her knee. โ€œIโ€™m on the side of your heart,ย chica. Your heart will tell you what to do if you listen.โ€

Heather groaned as another jab of pain targeted her temple. This was not the advice she wanted to hear. For when it came to her heart, she feared it was already lost.

After tossing and turning with too many sexy memories replaying in her sore head, Heather gave up on sleep. She took a long hot shower, dressed, and headed down the stairs to the studio by fiveย A.M. As she neared the security office, the door opened.

โ€œGood morning, lass,โ€ Robby greeted her.

She mumbled a greeting and hurried past him. If she could just immerse herself in the work she loved, she might be able to forget all the vampires lurking about. They probably all knew by now that their secret was out.

โ€œHey! Wait up, dudette!โ€

She glanced back. Great. The one named Phineas was following her.

She kept walking.

โ€œWhassup?โ€ He caught up with her.

โ€œNothing.โ€ She stopped in front of the studio doors and punched fourteen eighty-five into the keypad. โ€œI just want to work.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s cool. Donโ€™t mind me. Iโ€™m just hanging out.โ€ โ€œLike a bat?โ€ she muttered as she entered the studio.

โ€œMore like your own personal bodyguard.โ€ He closed the door behind her. โ€œWe want to keep you safe.โ€

โ€œSomehow Iโ€™d feel a lot safer without a vampire following me.โ€ Phineas stopped with an injured look. โ€œI ainโ€™t gonna hurt you.โ€

Had she actually hurt his feelings? โ€œYouโ€™ve never bitten anyone before?โ€

He winced. โ€œI ainโ€™t perfect, but Iโ€™ve worked real hard to control myself.

I know I was a bum before. Hell, I was a real loser when I was alive, but Angus believes in me, and I ainโ€™t gonna let him down.โ€

She proceeded to the worktable to organize her supplies. โ€œAre you saying your life is better now that youโ€™re dead?โ€

โ€œI ainโ€™t dead. At least not right now. And yeah, my life is better. This is my first real job, and Iโ€™m doing real good. Iโ€™m sending money home to my family. And Iโ€™m learning how to fence and do martial arts. You wanna see?โ€

Before she could say no, Phineas spun around to face the cluster of mannequins in the center of the room.

โ€œHai-ya!โ€ He assumed an attack pose. โ€œYouโ€™re going down, sucker!โ€

He grabbed a male mannequin by the arm, twisted, and bent over at the waist. Heather assumed the mannequin was supposed to fly over his shoulder and crash on the floor, but unfortunately, the arm simply came off.

Phineas looked surprised for only a second, then he tossed the arm on the floor. โ€œYeah, I whupped your ass.โ€ He pranced back, holding up his dukes. โ€œYou wonโ€™t be messing with me, sucker! Iโ€™ll turn you into the one- armed man!โ€

A grin tugged at Heatherโ€™s mouth, and she turned away. The last thing she wanted was to remember how much she actually liked these guys. She wandered toward the dress form where sheโ€™d draped the finished parts of

the first gown. There was a note stabbed to the form with a sewing pin. She glanced over the black cursive script to read the signature at the bottom.

Jean-Luc. Her heart lurched. She removed the note.

An excellent start on your first gown. The show will take place as planned, a week from this Saturday. Attendance will be restricted. I wish you well with your designs, but my first priority is your safety.

That was it. Polite and businesslike. She was almost disappointed. He could have written something like,ย Sorry Iโ€™m a vampire, orย Iโ€™d rather die again than ever bite you. But no, he didnโ€™t even mention his role as a blood- sucking fiend. And he didnโ€™t write anything romantic, either.

She crumpled up the note and dropped it in the trash bin. It was better this way. He was her boss, nothing more. As soon as Louie was dead, she was outta here. She settled down at the sewing machine to finish the skirt.

Phineas perched on the worktable. โ€œRobby thinks youโ€™re afraid of him.

Thatโ€™s why he sent me to guard you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not afraid.โ€ Just totally freaked. She stepped on the foot pedal to start the machine.

โ€œIt takes time to get used to us. Man, I was totally freaked when I first found out I was a vampire.โ€

Heather stopped sewing. Had he read her mind? More likely,ย totally

freakedย was just the universal reaction to vampires. โ€œHow long have you beenโ€ฆlike this?โ€

โ€œJust over a year.โ€ Phineas described his transformation at the hands, or teeth, of some evil vampire dudes, and how Angus had saved him.

โ€œThe evil ones still feed on people?โ€ Heather asked.

โ€œYeah. They even kill people. We hate them.โ€ Phineas puffed out his chest. โ€œWeโ€™re the good guys.โ€

โ€œSo there are good vampires and bad ones?โ€

โ€œYeah. How does Connor say it?ย Death doesnโ€™t change a manโ€™s heart.

So a bad dudeโ€™s gonna stay bad, you see.โ€

โ€œAnd a good man stays good?โ€ Like Jean-Luc. Sheโ€™d always felt he was a good man. A wonderful man.ย I know you love me. His words haunted her.

โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s right.โ€ Phineas launched into a long story about a really bad dude named Casimir.

Heather returned to her sewing, but found herself drawn into the story and asking questions. Apparently the two factions were called Vamps and Malcontents, and they were on the verge of an all-out war. Angus MacKay had been the Vamp general in the Great Vampire War of 1710.

โ€œDid Jean-Luc fight in the war?โ€ she asked.

โ€œHell, yeah. He was second in command. Connor told me Jean-Luc never left Romanโ€™s side. He took some major cuts to keep Roman safe.โ€

He was a loyal friend, a hero among his own kind. But his world was totally beyond hers. It was a dangerous world, too. Not a good place for her and Bethany. She tried not to think about him. โ€œWhoโ€™s Connor?โ€

โ€œRomanโ€™s head bodyguard. Iโ€™m usually assigned to Romanโ€™s house, but Connor insisted on hiding them.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re in danger?โ€ Heather recalled meeting Roman briefly. His wife had been very friendly andโ€”Heather stopped sewing with a gasp. โ€œThey

have a child!โ€

โ€œYeah. Romanโ€™s like a scientific genius, you know. He makes the

synthetic blood we drink. And when Shanna wanted a baby, he figured out a

way to make the baby his.โ€

Heather couldnโ€™t believe it. โ€œThat sweet little boy is the son of a vampire?โ€

โ€œYeah. Heโ€™s a cute little guy, huh?โ€

โ€œBut how could Shanna have a baby? Vampires are dead, sorta.โ€ This was too confusing.

โ€œShannaโ€™s mortal.โ€ Phineas grinned. โ€œLike you.โ€

Heather gulped. A mortal married to a vampire? And giving birth to his son. How could Shanna do that? But she seemed so happy. And the baby boy was beautiful.

โ€œMama!โ€ Bethany skipped into the room, followed by Fidelia with her purse and Ian.

Heather glanced at the clock. It was after six. She hugged her daughter. โ€œYouโ€™re up early.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m hungry,โ€ Bethany announced.

โ€œCome have breakfast with us.โ€ Fidelia stepped closer and whispered, โ€œThey want us to stay together all day.โ€

โ€œBut I have to work,โ€ Heather protested.

โ€œDoona worry,โ€ Ian said. โ€œWeโ€™ll bring some furniture in here and make sure yeโ€™re all comfy.โ€

Soon Heather and her family were sitting around the kitchen table eating cereal while Phineas stood guard. Ian plucked the recliner off the floor and left, carrying it over his head as if it weighed no more than five pounds.

โ€œHmm,ย muy macho.โ€ Fidelia leaned to the side to watch his exit.

Heather swallowed her cereal with a gulp. Apparently vampires were very strong. She recalled how easily Jean-Luc had picked her up and tossed her on the bed. Other memories rushed back. Good Lord, he was so hot. But off limits. She shoved the memories away.

โ€œItโ€™s a little warm in here, no?โ€ Fidelia gave her a sly grin.

Heather groaned inwardly. It could be really annoying to have a friend who was psychic.

Robby came in, and without a word, he hefted the entire love seat onto one shoulder and sauntered from the room.

โ€œOoh.โ€ Fidelia waggled her dark brows. โ€œRoberto. I wonder if he wears anything under that skirt.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a kilt.โ€ Heather motioned with her head toward her daughter. โ€œLetโ€™s keep breakfast G-rated, okay?โ€

โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll just imagine it.โ€ Fidelia scowled at her cereal. โ€œAt my age, thatโ€™s all I have left.โ€

Phineas grinned. โ€œYouโ€™re a baby compared to some of the old-timers around here.โ€

โ€œGracias, muchacho.โ€ Fidelia gave him a grateful look. โ€œI like all you men around here. Youโ€™reย muy macho.โ€ She gave Heather a pointed look. โ€œDonโ€™t you think so?โ€

She glowered back. โ€œDonโ€™t push it.โ€

Ian and Robby returned for the television and TV stand.

โ€œThank you!โ€ Fidelia called after them. โ€œNow I wonโ€™t miss my soaps.

These men are very sensitive to our needs, donโ€™t you think?โ€ Heather made a face at her.

Phineasโ€™s laugh turned into a yawn. โ€œThe sunโ€™s coming. I can feel it. Iโ€™ll have to leave soon.โ€

Meaning he would be dead soon. Jean-Luc would be dead, too. Heather shuddered at the thought. Where was he? Was he climbing into that big bed of his so he could lie there all day dead as a doornail?

Phineas stood. โ€œHey, bro! Whassup?โ€

โ€œHey.โ€ Phil walked toward them. โ€œGood morning.โ€

Heather greeted him with a smile. At last, another normal human being. Phil eyed the empty sitting area. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œWe moved everything to the studio so Heather could work,โ€ Ian explained as he entered the kitchen. He inclined his head toward Heather. โ€œYeโ€™re all set up for the day.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ Heather gathered up bowls and took them to the sink. โ€œPhineas, ye can go downstairs,โ€ Ian told him. โ€œRobbyโ€™s already headed

that way.โ€

โ€œSure. So long.โ€ Phineas waved at Heather. โ€œSee ya tomorrow night.โ€ โ€œSleep well.โ€ She winced. What was the appropriate thing to say?ย Die

well?

โ€œWhat about you, bro?โ€ Phineas asked Ian.

โ€œI took the drug,โ€ Ian responded, his voice low. โ€œIโ€™m staying up.โ€ Phineas grimaced. โ€œMan, thatโ€™s wack.โ€

Phil looked the young Scotsman over carefully. โ€œDo you feel all right?โ€ Ian shrugged. โ€œI was a wee dizzy at first, but I feel fine now.โ€

Phineas shook his head. โ€œIโ€™ve dealt with drugs before. Theyโ€™re no good, man.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine,โ€ Ian insisted. โ€œNow go on downstairs.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Phineas looked at Heather. โ€œKeep an eye on him.โ€ He strode from the room.

Heather approached the two remaining guards. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ โ€œNothing.โ€ Ian crossed his arms, frowning.

โ€œHeโ€™s taken an experimental drug that will allow him to stay awake during the day,โ€ Phil explained.

โ€œIs it dangerous?โ€ Heather asked.

โ€œNay,โ€ Ian answered. โ€œI feel fine, and we need more than one guard during the day.โ€

Heather bit her bottom lip. These vampires were going to great lengths to protect her and her family. It was becoming increasingly hard to think of them as monsters.

As they all walked back to the design studio, she noticed the darkness. Shutters had been drawn over all the windows. The lights were on, but it was still gloomy without sunlight.

โ€œThey did a lot of stuff while we were eating breakfast,โ€ she whispered to Phil.

โ€œThey can move very fast,โ€ he replied.

Super fast and super strong.ย And super sexy. She mentally slapped herself for that last thought. โ€œWhy does it have to be so dark?โ€

โ€œSunlight would burn Ian,โ€ Phil whispered. โ€œItโ€™ll kill him if heโ€™s exposed to too much.โ€

Heather grimaced. The young Scotsman was putting himself in too much danger. โ€œI donโ€™t see why we need two guards in the daytime. Louieโ€™s a vampire, right?โ€

Phil nodded.

โ€œThen he would only attack at night,โ€ Heather concluded. โ€œUnless heโ€™s taking the same drug Ian is.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure he isnโ€™t. But heโ€™s an expert at controlling the minds of mortals. He used mortals to assassinate the French kings. He could brainwash anyone to come here and kill us, even during the day.โ€

Heather gulped. โ€œSo anyone who comes to the door could be an assassin? Likeโ€ฆthe mailman?โ€

โ€œCorrect.โ€

The doorbell rang.
