Chapter no 46 – FRANK

The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus #2)

โ€ŒPercy was waiting for them.ย He looked mad.โ€Œ

He stood at the edge of the glacier, leaning on the staff with the golden eagle, gazing down at the wreckage heโ€™d caused: several hundred acres of newly open water dotted with icebergs and flotsam from the ruined camp.

The only remains on the glacier were the main gates, which listed sideways, and a tattered blue banner lying over a pile of snow-bricks.

When they ran up to him, Percy said, โ€œHey,โ€ like they were just meeting for lunch or something.

โ€œYouโ€™re alive!โ€ Frank marveled.

Percy frowned. โ€œThe fall? That was nothing. I fell twice that far from the St. Louis Arch.โ€

โ€œYou didย what?โ€ย Hazel asked.

โ€œNever mind. The important thing was I didnโ€™t drown.โ€

โ€œSo the prophecyย wasย incomplete!โ€ Hazel grinned. โ€œIt probably said something like:ย The son of Neptune will drown a whole bunch of ghosts.โ€

Percy shrugged. He was still looking at Frank like he was miffed. โ€œI got a bone to pick with you, Zhang. You can turn into an eagle? And a bear?โ€

โ€œAnd an elephant,โ€ Hazel said proudly.

โ€œAn elephant.โ€ Percy shook his head in disbelief. โ€œThatโ€™s your family gift? You can change shape?โ€

Frank shuffled his feet. โ€œUmโ€ฆyeah. Periclymenus, my ancestor, the Argonautโ€”he could do that. He passed down the ability.โ€

โ€œAnd he got that gift from Poseidon,โ€ Percy said. โ€œThatโ€™s completely unfair. I canโ€™t turn into animals.โ€

Frank stared at him. โ€œUnfair? You can breathe underwater and blow up glaciers and summon freaking hurricanesโ€”and itโ€™s unfair that I can be an elephant?โ€

Percy considered. โ€œOkay. I guess you got a point. But next time I say youโ€™re totallyย beastโ€”โ€

โ€œJust shut up,โ€ Frank said. โ€œPlease.โ€ Percy cracked a smile.

โ€œIf you guys are done,โ€ Hazel said, โ€œwe need to go. Camp Jupiter is under attack. They could use that gold eagle.โ€

Percy nodded. โ€œOne thing first, though. Hazel, thereโ€™s about a ton of Imperial gold weapons and armor at the bottom of the bay now, plus a really nice chariot. Iโ€™m betting that stuff could come in handy.โ€ฆโ€

It took them a long timeโ€”too longโ€”but they all knew those weapons could make the difference between victory and defeat if they got them back to camp in time.

Hazel used her abilities to levitate some items from the bottom of the sea. Percy swam down and brought up more. Even Frank helped by turning into a seal, which was kind of cool, though Percy claimed his breath smelled like fish.

It took all three of them to raise the chariot, but finally theyโ€™d managed to haul everything ashore to a black sand beach near the base of the glacier. They couldnโ€™t fit everything in the chariot, but they used Frankโ€™s rope to strap down most of the gold weapons and the best pieces of armor.

โ€œIt looks like Santaโ€™s sleigh,โ€ Frank said. โ€œCan Arion even pull that much?โ€

Arion huffed.

โ€œHazel,โ€ Percy said, โ€œI am seriously going to wash your horseโ€™s mouth with soap. He says, yes, he can pull it, but he needs food.โ€

Hazel picked up an old Roman dagger, aย pugio. It was bent and dull, so it wouldnโ€™t be much good in a fight, but it looked like solid Imperial gold.

โ€œHere you go, Arion,โ€ she said. โ€œHigh-performance fuel.โ€

The horse took the dagger in his teeth and chewed it like an apple. Frank made a silent oath never to put his hand near that horseโ€™s mouth.

โ€œIโ€™m not doubting Arionโ€™s strength,โ€ he said carefully, โ€œbut will the chariot hold up? The last oneโ€”โ€

โ€œThis one has Imperial gold wheels and axle,โ€ Percy said. โ€œIt should hold.โ€

โ€œIf not,โ€ Hazel said, โ€œthis is going to be a short trip. But weโ€™re out of time. Come on!โ€

Frank and Percy climbed into the chariot. Hazel swung up onto Arionโ€™s back.

โ€œGiddyup!โ€ she yelled.

The horseโ€™s sonic boom echoed across the bay. They sped south, avalanches tumbling down the mountains as they passed.
