โPercy was glad Riptide had returnedย to his pocket. Judging from Reynaโs expression, he thought he might need to defend himself.โ
She stormed into theย principiaย with her purple cloak billowing, and her greyhounds at her feet. Percy was sitting in one of the praetor chairs that heโd pulled to the visitorโs side, which maybe wasnโt the proper thing to do. He started to get up.
โStay seated,โ Reyna growled. โYou leave after lunch. We have a lot to discuss.โ
She plunked down her dagger so hard, the jelly-bean bowl rattled.
Aurum and Argentum took their posts on her left and right and fixed their ruby eyes on Percy.
โWhatโd I do wrong?โ Percy asked. โIf itโs about the chairโโ
โItโs not you.โ Reyna scowled. โIย hateย senate meetings. When Octavian gets talkingโฆโ
Percy nodded. โYouโre a warrior. Octavian is a talker. Put him in front of the senate, and suddenlyย heย becomes the powerful one.โ
She narrowed her eyes. โYouโre smarter than you look.โ
โGee, thanks. I hear Octavian might get elected praetor, assuming the camp survives that long.โ
โWhich brings us to the subject of doomsday,โ Reyna said, โand how you might help prevent it. But before I place the fate of Camp Jupiter in your hands, we need to get a few things straight.โ
She sat down and put a ring on the tableโa band of silver etched with a sword-and-torch design, like Reynaโs tattoo.
โDo you know what this is?โ
โThe sign of your mom,โ Percy said. โTheโฆuh, war goddess.โ He tried to remember the name but he didnโt want to get it wrongโsomething like bologna. Or salami?
โBellona, yes.โ Reyna scrutinized him carefully. โYou donโt remember where you saw this ring before? You really donโt remember me or my sister, Hylla?โ
Percy shook his head. โIโm sorry.โ โIt wouldโve been four years ago.โ โJust before you came to camp.โ Reyna frowned. โHow did youโ?โ
โYouโve got four stripes on your tattoo. Four years.โ
Reyna looked at her forearm. โOf course. It seems so long ago. I suppose you wouldnโt recall me even if youย hadย your memory. I was just a little girl
โone attendant among so many at the spa. But you spoke with my sister, just before you and that other one, Annabeth, destroyed our home.โ
Percy tried to remember. He really did. For some reason, Annabeth and he had visited a spa and decided to destroy it. He couldnโt imagine why.
Maybe they hadnโt liked the deep-tissue massage? Maybe theyโd gotten bad manicures?
โItโs a blank,โ he said. โSince your dogs arenโt attacking me, I hope youโll believe me. Iโm telling the truth.โ
Aurum and Argentum snarled. Percy got the feeling they were thinking,
Please lie. Please lie.
Reyna tapped the silver ring.
โI believe youโre sincere,โ she said. โBut not everyone at camp does.
Octavian thinks youโre a spy. He thinks you were sent here by Gaea to find our weaknesses and distract us. He believes the old legends about the
Greeks.โ
โOld legends?โ
Reynaโs hand rested halfway between her dagger and the jelly beans.
Percy had a feeling that if she made a sudden move, she wouldnโt be grabbing for the candy.
โSome believe Greek demigods still exist,โ she said, โheroes who follow the older forms of the gods. There are legends of battles between Roman and Greek heroes in relatively modern timesโthe American Civil War, for instance. I have no proof of this, and if our Lares know anything, they refuse to say. But Octavian believes the Greeks are still around, plotting our downfall, working with the forces of Gaea. He thinks you are one of them.โ
โIs that what you believe?โ
โI believe you came fromย somewhere,โ she said. โYouโre important, and dangerous. Two gods have taken a special interest in you since you arrived, so I canโt believe youโd work against Olympusโฆor Rome.โ She shrugged. โOf course, I could be wrong. Perhaps the gods sent you here to test my judgment. But I thinkโฆI think you were sent here to make up for the loss of Jason.โ
JasonโฆPercy couldnโt go very far in this camp without hearing that name.
โThe way you talk about himโฆโ Percy said. โWere you two a couple?โ
Reynaโs eyes bored into himโlike the eyes of a hungry wolf. Percy had seen enough hungry wolves to know.
โWe might have been,โ Reyna said, โgiven time. Praetors work closely together. Itโs common for them to become romantically involved. But Jason was only praetor for a few months before he disappeared. Ever since then, Octavian has been pestering me, agitating for new elections. Iโve resisted. I need a partner in powerโbut Iโd prefer someone like Jason. A warrior, not a schemer.โ
She waited. Percy realized she was sending him a silent invitation.
His throat went dry. โOhโฆyou meanโฆoh.โ
โI believe the gods sent you to help me,โ Reyna said. โI donโt understand where you come from, any more than I understood it four years ago. But I think your arrival is some sort of repayment. You destroyed my home once. Now youโve been sent to save my home. I donโt hold a grudge against you for the past, Percy. My sister hates you still, itโs true, but Fate brought me here to Camp Jupiter. Iโve done well. All I ask is that you work with me for the future. I intend to save this camp.โ
The metal dogs glared at him, their mouths frozen in snarl mode. Percy found Reynaโs eyes a lot harder to meet.
โLook, Iโll help,โ he promised. โBut Iโm new here. Youโve got a lot of good people who know this camp better than I do. If we succeed on this quest, Hazel and Frank will be heroes. You could ask one of themโโ
โPlease,โ Reyna said. โNo one will follow a child of Pluto. Thereโs something about that girlโฆrumors about where she came from.โฆNo, she wonโt do. As for Frank Zhang, he has a good heart, but heโs hopelessly naรฏve and inexperienced. Besides, if the others found out about his family history at this campโโ
โFamily history?โ
โThe point is, Percy,ย youย are the real power on this quest.ย Youย are a seasoned veteran. Iโve seen what you can do. A son of Neptune wouldnโt be my first choice, but if you return successfully from this mission, the legion might be saved. The praetorship will be yours for the taking. Together, you and I could expand the power of Rome. We could raise an army and find the Doors of Death, crush Gaeaโs forces once and for all. You would find me a very helpfulโฆfriend.โ
She said that word like it could have several meanings, and he could pick which one.
Percyโs feet started tapping on the floor, anxious to run. โReynaโฆIโm honored, and all. Seriously. But Iโve got a girlfriend. And I donโt want power, or a praetorship.โ
Percy was afraid heโd make her mad. Instead she just raised her eyebrows.
โA man who turns down power?โ she said. โThatโs not very Roman of you. Just think about it. In four days, I have to make a choice. If we are to fight off an invasion, weย mustย have two strong praetors. Iโd prefer you, but if you fail on your quest, or donโt come back, or refuse my offerโฆWell, Iโll work with Octavian. I mean to save this camp, Percy Jackson. Things are worse than you realize.โ
Percy remembered what Frank said about the monster attacks getting more frequent. โHow bad?โ
Reynaโs nails dug into the table. โEven the senate doesnโt know the whole truth. Iโve asked Octavian not to share his auguries, or weโd have mass panic. Heโs seen a great army marching south, more than we can possibly defeat. Theyโre led by a giantโโ
โAlcyoneus?โ
โI donโt think so. If he is truly invulnerable in Alaska, heโd be foolish to come here himself. It must be one of his brothers.โ
โGreat,โ Percy said. โSo weโve got two giants to worry about.โ
The praetor nodded. โLupa and her wolves are trying to slow them down, but this force is too strong even for them. The enemy will be here soonโby the Feast of Fortuna at the very latest.โ
Percy shuddered. Heโd seen Lupa in action. He knew all about the wolf goddess and her pack. If this enemy was too powerful for Lupa, Camp Jupiter didnโt stand a chance.
Reyna read his expression. โYes, itโs bad, but not hopeless.
If you succeed in bringing back our eagle, if you release Death so we can actuallyย killย our enemies, then we stand a chance. And thereโs one more possibility.โฆโ
Reyna slid the silver ring across the table. โI canโt give you much help, but your journey will take you close to Seattle. Iโm asking you for a favor,
which may also help you. Find my sister Hylla.โ โYour sisterโฆthe one who hates me?โ
โOh, yes,โ Reyna agreed. โShe would love to kill you. But show her that ring as a token from me, and she may help you instead.โ
โMay?โ
โI canโt speak for her. In factโฆโ Reyna frowned. โIn fact I havenโt spoken to her in weeks. Sheโs gone silent. With these armies passing through
โโ
โYou want me to check on her,โ Percy guessed. โMake sure sheโs okay.โ โPartially, yes. I canโt imagine sheโs been overcome. My sister has a
powerful force. Her territory is well defended. But if you can find her, she
could offer you valuable help. It could mean the difference between success and failure on your quest. And if you tell her whatโs happening hereโโ
โShe might send help?โ Percy asked.
Reyna didnโt answer, but Percy could see the desperation in her eyes.
She was terrified, grasping forย anythingย that could save her camp. No wonder she wanted Percyโs help. She was the only praetor. The defense of the camp rested on her shoulders alone.
Percy took the ring. โIโll find her. Where do I look? What kind of force does she have?โ
โDonโt worry. Just go to Seattle. Theyโll find you.โ
That didnโt sound encouraging, but Percy slipped the ring onto his leather necklace with his beads and hisย probatioย tablet. โWish me luck.โ
โFight well, Percy Jackson,โ Reyna said. โAnd thank you.โ
He could tell the audience was over. Reyna was having trouble holding herself together, keeping up the image of the confident commander. She needed some time by herself.
But at the door of theย principia,ย Percy couldnโt resist turning. โHow did we destroy your homeโthat spa where you lived?โ
The metal greyhounds growled. Reyna snapped her fingers to silence them.
โYou destroyed the power of our mistress,โ she said. โYou freed some prisoners who took revenge on all of us who lived on the island. My sister and Iโฆwell, we survived. It was difficult. But in the long run, I think we are better off away from that place.โ
โStill, Iโm sorry,โ Percy said. โIf I hurt you, Iโm sorry.โ
Reyna gazed at him for a long time, as if trying to translate his words. โAn apology? Not very Roman at all, Percy Jackson. Youโd make an interesting praetor. I hope youโll think about my offer.โ
