The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Evelyn thinks. She is sitting cross-legged on the sofa opposite me, in slim black jersey pants, a gray shell tank, and an oversized white cardigan. โ€œOK,โ€ she says, nodding. โ€œYou can give them a piece of itโ€”whatever piece you likeโ€”for the June issue. If, and only if, you shut up about this timeline business.โ€

I donโ€™t let my joy show on my face. Iโ€™m halfway there. I canโ€™t rest until Iโ€™m done. I have to push her. I have to ask and be willing to be told no. I have to know my worth.

After all, Evelyn wants something from me. She needs me. I donโ€™t know why or what for, but I know I wouldnโ€™t be sitting here if that werenโ€™t the case. I have value to her. I know that. And now I have to use it. Just as she would if she were me.

So here we go.

โ€œYou need to sit for a photo shoot. For the cover.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nonnegotiable.โ€

โ€œEverything is negotiable. Havenโ€™t you gotten enough? Iโ€™ve agreed to the excerpt.โ€

โ€œYou and I both know how valuable new images of you would be.โ€

โ€œI said no.โ€

OK. Here we go. I can do this. I just have to do what Evelyn would do. I have to โ€œEvelyn Hugoโ€ Evelyn Hugo. โ€œYou agree to the cover photo, or Iโ€™m out.โ€

Evelyn sits forward in her chair. โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œYou want me to write your life story. I want to write your life story. But these are my terms. Iโ€™m not going to lose my job for you. And the way I keep my job is I deliver an Evelyn Hugo feature with a cover. So you either persuade me to lose my job over thisโ€”which is only possible if you tell me when this book is being soldโ€”or you do this. Those are your options.โ€

Evelyn looks at me, and I get the impression that I am more than she bargained for. And I feel good about that. Thereโ€™s a smile forming that is hard to keep in.

โ€œYouโ€™re having fun with this, arenโ€™t you?โ€ she says.

โ€œIโ€™m trying to protect my interests.โ€

โ€œYes, but youโ€™re also good at it, and I think youโ€™re delighting in it a bit.โ€

I finally let the smile out. โ€œIโ€™m learning from the best.โ€

โ€œYes, you are,โ€ Evelyn says. She scrunches her nose. โ€œA cover?โ€

โ€œA cover.โ€

โ€œFine. A cover. And in exchange, starting Monday, I want you here every waking moment. I want to tell you all I have to say as soon as possible. And from now on, when I donโ€™t answer a question the first time, you donโ€™t ask it again. Do we have a deal?โ€

I get up from behind the desk, walk over to Evelyn, and put out my hand. โ€œDeal.โ€

Evelyn laughs. โ€œLook at you,โ€ she says. โ€œYou keep this up, you might just rule your own part of the world one day.โ€

โ€œWhy, thank you,โ€ I say.

โ€œYeah, yeah, yeah,โ€ she says, not unkindly. โ€œSit down at the desk. Start recording. I donโ€™t have all day.โ€

I do as Iโ€™m told, and then I look at her. โ€œAll right,โ€ I say. โ€œSo youโ€™re in love with Celia, youโ€™ve divorced Don, it looks like your career is down the tubes. Whatโ€™s next?โ€

Evelyn takes a second to answer, and in that moment I realize that she has just agreed to the very thing she swore she would never doโ€”a Vivant coverโ€”just so I wonโ€™t walk.

Evelyn wants me for something. And she wants it bad.

And now Iโ€™m finally starting to suspect that I should be scared.
