โDon wants you out of the studio. Ariโs planning to loan you out to MGM and Columbia.โ
โAnd then what?โ
โAnd then youโre on your own.โ
โWell, thatโs fine. I can do that. Celiaโs freelance. Iโll get an agent, like her.โ
โYou can,โ Harry said. โAnd I think you should try, but . . .โ
โBut what?โ
โDon wants Ari to blackball you from getting an Oscar nod, and Ariโs agreeing to it. I think heโs gonna loan you out and purposefully put you in flops.โ
โHe canโt do that.โ
โHe can. And he will, because Donโs the goose that laid the golden egg. The studios are all hurting. People arenโt going to the movies as much; they are waiting for the next episode of Gunsmoke. Sunsetโs been in decline from the minute we were forced to sell off our theaters. Weโre staying afloat because of stars like Don.โ
โAnd stars like me.โ
Harry nodded. โButโand Iโm sorry to say it, but I think itโs important that you see the big pictureโDonโs worth a lot more asses in the seats than you are.โ
I felt about two inches tall. โThat hurts.โ
โI know,โ Harry said. โAnd Iโm sorry.โ
The water in the bathroom turned off, and I heard Celia step out of the shower. There was a breeze coming in from the window. I wanted to shut it, but I didnโt move. โSo thatโs it. If Don doesnโt want me, no one does.โ
โIf Don doesnโt want you, he doesnโt want anyone else to have you. I realize itโs a subtle difference, but . . .โ
โBut it is vaguely reassuring.โ
โGood.โ
โSo thatโs his play? Don ruins my life and buys my silence with a house and less than a million dollars?โ
โThatโs a lot of money,โ Harry said, as if it mattered, as if it helped.
โYou know I donโt care about money,โ I said. โAt least, not primarily.โ
โI know.โ
Celia came out of the bathroom in a robe, her hair wet and straight. โOh, hi, Harry,โ she said. โIโll just be a minute.โ
โNo need to hurry on my account,โ he said. โI was just leaving.โ
Celia smiled and walked into the bedroom.
โThank you for bringing it,โ I said.
Harry nodded.
โI did it once, I can do it again,โ I said to him as we walked to the door. โI can build the whole thing back up from scratch.โ
โI have never doubted that you could do a single thing you put your mind to.โ Harry put his hand on the doorknob, ready to go. โIโd like it if . . . I hope that we can still be friends, Evelyn. That we can stillโโ
โOh, shut up,โ I said. โWeโre best friends. Who may or may not tell each other everything. That doesnโt change. You still love me, right? Even though Iโm about to be on the outs?โ
โI do.โ
