The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

โ€œDon wants you out of the studio. Ariโ€™s planning to loan you out to MGM and Columbia.โ€

โ€œAnd then what?โ€

โ€œAnd then youโ€™re on your own.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s fine. I can do that. Celiaโ€™s freelance. Iโ€™ll get an agent, like her.โ€

โ€œYou can,โ€ Harry said. โ€œAnd I think you should try, but . . .โ€

โ€œBut what?โ€

โ€œDon wants Ari to blackball you from getting an Oscar nod, and Ariโ€™s agreeing to it. I think heโ€™s gonna loan you out and purposefully put you in flops.โ€

โ€œHe canโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œHe can. And he will, because Donโ€™s the goose that laid the golden egg. The studios are all hurting. People arenโ€™t going to the movies as much; they are waiting for the next episode of Gunsmoke. Sunsetโ€™s been in decline from the minute we were forced to sell off our theaters. Weโ€™re staying afloat because of stars like Don.โ€

โ€œAnd stars like me.โ€

Harry nodded. โ€œButโ€”and Iโ€™m sorry to say it, but I think itโ€™s important that you see the big pictureโ€”Donโ€™s worth a lot more asses in the seats than you are.โ€

I felt about two inches tall. โ€œThat hurts.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Harry said. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

The water in the bathroom turned off, and I heard Celia step out of the shower. There was a breeze coming in from the window. I wanted to shut it, but I didnโ€™t move. โ€œSo thatโ€™s it. If Don doesnโ€™t want me, no one does.โ€

โ€œIf Don doesnโ€™t want you, he doesnโ€™t want anyone else to have you. I realize itโ€™s a subtle difference, but . . .โ€

โ€œBut it is vaguely reassuring.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œSo thatโ€™s his play? Don ruins my life and buys my silence with a house and less than a million dollars?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a lot of money,โ€ Harry said, as if it mattered, as if it helped.

โ€œYou know I donโ€™t care about money,โ€ I said. โ€œAt least, not primarily.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

Celia came out of the bathroom in a robe, her hair wet and straight. โ€œOh, hi, Harry,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™ll just be a minute.โ€

โ€œNo need to hurry on my account,โ€ he said. โ€œI was just leaving.โ€

Celia smiled and walked into the bedroom.

โ€œThank you for bringing it,โ€ I said.

Harry nodded.

โ€œI did it once, I can do it again,โ€ I said to him as we walked to the door. โ€œI can build the whole thing back up from scratch.โ€

โ€œI have never doubted that you could do a single thing you put your mind to.โ€ Harry put his hand on the doorknob, ready to go. โ€œIโ€™d like it if . . . I hope that we can still be friends, Evelyn. That we can stillโ€”โ€

โ€œOh, shut up,โ€ I said. โ€œWeโ€™re best friends. Who may or may not tell each other everything. That doesnโ€™t change. You still love me, right? Even though Iโ€™m about to be on the outs?โ€

โ€œI do.โ€
