โOw, Ruby,โ I said, noticeably perturbed.
She nodded covertly to the laundry room to the right of us.
โWhat on earth . . .โ I said.
โWould you just open the goddamn door, Evelyn?โ
I turned the handle, and Ruby stepped in and dragged me with her. She shut the door behind us.
โHere,โ she said, handing me one of the cocktails in the dark. โI was getting it for Joy, but you have it. It matches your dress, anyway.โ
As my eyes adjusted, I took the drink from her. โYouโre lucky it matches my dress. You nearly poured half the drink on it.โ
With one of her hands now free, Ruby tugged on the pull chain of the light above us. The tiny room lit up and stung my eyes.
โYou have absolutely no decorum tonight, Ruby.โ
โYou think Iโm worried about what you think of me, Evelyn Hugo? Now, listen, whatโre we going to do?โ
โWhat are we going to do about what?โ
โAbout what? About Celia St. James, thatโs what.โ
โWhat about her?โ
Ruby hung her head in frustration. โEvelyn, I swear.โ
โShe gave a great performance. What can we do?โ I said.
โThis is exactly what I told Harry would happen. And he said it wouldnโt.โ
โWell, what do you want me to do about it?โ
โYouโre losing out, too. Or do you not see that?โ
โOf course I see it!โ I cared, obviously. But I also knew I could still win Best Actress. Celia and Ruby would be competing for Best Supporting. โI donโt know what to tell you, Ruby. We were all right about Celia. Sheโs talented and gorgeous and charming, and when youโve been bested, sometimes itโs good to recognize it and move on.โ
Ruby looked at me as if I had slapped her.
I had nothing else to say, and she was blocking my way out of the room. So I put the drink to my mouth and downed it in two gulps.
โThis is not the Evelyn I know and respect,โ Ruby said.
โOh, Ruby, put a lid on it.โ
She finished her drink. โPeople have been saying all sorts of things about the two of you, and I didnโt believe it. But now . . . I donโt know.โ
โPeople have been saying all sorts of things like what?โ
โYou know.โ
โI assure you, I havenโt the faintest.โ
โWhy do you make things so difficult?โ
โRuby, youโve pulled me into a laundry room against my will, and youโre barking at me about things I canโt control. Iโm not the difficult one.โ
โSheโs a lesbian, Evelyn.โ
