Chapter no 38 – Derek

The Rule Book

โ€ŒIโ€™m driving home from Nathanโ€™s house where we all hung out after leaving the hospital when Nora calls me.โ€Œ

Tension in my shoulders unravels just from the sight of her name. All day Iโ€™ve been considering what to do about Nora, and I think I have a good plan.

โ€œYou must have felt me thinking about you,โ€ I say as a greeting. โ€œMy noseย wasย itching earlierโ€ฆโ€

I grip the steering wheel. โ€œThatโ€™s not the part of your body I was daydreaming of touching.โ€

The line goes silent.

Grinning, I ask, โ€œYou there, Ginger Snap?โ€

She clears her throat. โ€œMm-hm. Iโ€™m here. Justโ€ฆhad to have CPR for a second there. Iโ€™m revivedโ€”everything is fine.โ€

God, I love her. Miss her already.

Turning on my blinker, I switch lanes. โ€œHowโ€™s your day been?โ€

She sighs contentedly and I imagine her soft lips smiling. โ€œIt wasโ€ฆ good. I got a new office. You didnโ€™t see my other one, but if you hold up your thumb youโ€™ll have an accurate representation of the size.โ€

I smile. โ€œAnd the new one is bigger?โ€

โ€œDefinitely. And has these big, glorious windows and doesnโ€™t even smell a bit like cleaning supplies.โ€ She pauses. โ€œYouโ€™ll have to come see it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d like that.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™ll have to behave,โ€ she says, accurately reading my thoughts through the line.

โ€œWhen do I not behave?โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re purring, Derek.โ€

I laugh. โ€œSo why just good and not great? Was Marty a jerk? Say the word and Iโ€™ll be the worst surprise heโ€™s ever found in his office tomorrow morning.โ€

She chuckles, but itโ€™s not convincing. โ€œI didnโ€™t interact with him much. I stayed buried in my office pretty much all day.โ€

Alarm creeps over my skin. โ€œYou sound sad, Nora.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t mean toโ€ฆI guess I justโ€”actually can we circle back to this question? I want to fill you in on what I learned today. About your position on the team. Are you where you can talk business for a minute?โ€

Her tone of voice is throwing me. I wish I were with her right now so I could see her face. Check to see if there are lines beside her eyes when she smiles or if her mouth is pressed flat.

โ€œIโ€™m just driving home. So yeah, let me hear the good news,โ€ I say with unmistakable sarcasm.

โ€œI spoke with the team execs and everything we heard today at the airport really was just a rumorโ€”and not one leaked by them.โ€ย Thatโ€™s a relief.ย โ€œThey want you to know there are no immediate plans to cut you, and that the Sharks have always valued your position on the team and are going to give you the shot you deserve.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆ?โ€ I ask, knowing full well that there is one.

โ€œBut,โ€ Nora begins gently, โ€œyou already know the rest. Your job is by no means safe and will depend heavily on how you perform those first few games. They want to see how your injury affects your performanceโ€”and if itโ€™s for the worse, we might be looking at a bench, a cut, a salary renegotiationโ€ฆor even a trade.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to play for anyone but the Sharks.โ€

โ€œEven if that means not playing at all?โ€ she says, cutting right to the meat of it.

I allow her question to sink in before I answer. And for a minute we both listen to the soft sounds of my blinker. โ€œI donโ€™t want to be traded. The Sharksโ€ฆthe guysโ€ฆtheyโ€™re like my family. I want to end my career as a Shark.โ€

โ€œI understand that. And respect it,โ€ she says, and I wish more than anything I were there with herโ€”could be having this conversation with her in my arms. Preferably naked. โ€œOkay, then I have more to say, and I want you to listen and not respond until Iโ€™m completely done. Promise?โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t sound good.โ€ โ€œPromise?โ€

I sigh and it rushes into all the little cracks of our relationship Iโ€™ve been feeling today. โ€œFine. I promise.โ€

Thereโ€™s an awkward silence before she says, โ€œIโ€™m going to give you an out from our relationship right now.โ€

โ€œWhy theย hellย would Iโ€”โ€

โ€œHey!โ€ she cuts me off. โ€œNo interrupting, remember?โ€ โ€œSorry,โ€ I growl, hating this promise Iโ€™ve made already.

โ€œAs I was saying, I want to give you an out. All day Iโ€™ve been thinking and realizing our entire relationship is unfair to you. You did this as a service to me and my career, and Iโ€™m so grateful, and the last thing I want is for you to feel stuck.โ€

I have to clench my teeth together to keep from interrupting.

โ€œWe fulfilled our honeymoon obligation and will be out of the public eye for the most part while everyone expects you to focus on training camp and preseason. If you need to pretend that everything that happened in Cancรบn was just a fever dreamโ€”Iโ€™m willing to do that for you. Because I put my career first all those years ago, and I wonโ€™t fault you for doing the same for yours now if you need to.โ€

I wait a beat after sheโ€™s stopped talking to answer. โ€œYou finished?โ€ โ€œYes. I think so.โ€

โ€œOkay. My answer isย hell no.โ€ โ€œBut, Derekโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, listen. Because thereโ€™s one thing you said that was completely wrong.โ€ The gates at the front of my neighborhood open when I flash my key card at the receiver. โ€œI didnโ€™t go on the honeymoon with you as a favor. I stayed married to you because Iโ€™m selfish and I was glad to find any excuse I could to be near you as much as possible. So noโ€ฆI donโ€™t want an out.ย Do you?โ€

I pull into my driveway and thatโ€™s when I notice Noraโ€™s car parked in the guest parking space. But I donโ€™t see her anywhere. โ€œWait.ย Youโ€™re here?โ€ I ask.

โ€œI used your door code to get in. Iโ€™ll see you upstairs,โ€ she says before hanging up.

Knowing sheโ€™s here has me racing into the house and taking the steps two at a time. I fly into my bedroom but then stop short at the threshold when I spot her sitting on the edge of my bed. Sheโ€™s still wearing the same clothes from this morning, that huge yellow smiley face tee and leggingsโ€ฆ but now her hair is piled up in a cute bun that makes my heart stop.

โ€œHi,โ€ she says with a gentle smile, but then I see sheโ€™s holding somethingโ€”a large cardboard box. Suddenly, it feels all too familiar, like the day she broke up with me.
