Chapter no 12

The Maze Runner

Thomas didnโ€™t move for a few seconds. The boy lay in a crumpled heap, barely moving, but Thomas was frozen by indecision, afraid to get involved. What if something was seriously wrong with this guy? What if heโ€™d been โ€ฆย stung?ย What ifโ€”

Thomas snapped out of itโ€”the Runner obviously needed help. โ€œAlby!โ€ he shouted. โ€œNewt! Somebody get them!โ€

Thomas sprinted to the older boy and knelt down beside him. โ€œHey

โ€”you okay?โ€ The Runnerโ€™s head rested on outstretched arms as he panted, his chest heaving. He was conscious, but Thomas had never seen someone so exhausted.

โ€œIโ€™m โ€ฆ fine,โ€ he said between breaths, then looked up. โ€œWho the klunk are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m new here.โ€ It hit Thomas then that the Runners were out in the Maze during the day and hadnโ€™t witnessed any of the recent events firsthand. Did this guy even know about the girl? Probablyโ€”surely someone had told him. โ€œIโ€™m Thomasโ€”been here just a couple of days.โ€

The Runner pushed himself up into a sitting position, his black hair matted to his skull with sweat. โ€œOh, yeah, Thomas,โ€ he huffed. โ€œNewbie. You and the chick.โ€

Alby jogged up then, clearly upset. โ€œWhatโ€™re you doinโ€™ back, Minho? What happened?โ€

โ€œCalm your wad, Alby,โ€ the Runner replied, seeming to gain strength by the second. โ€œMake yourself useful and get me some water

โ€”I dropped my pack out there somewhere.โ€

But Alby didnโ€™t move. He kicked Minho in the legโ€”too hard to be playful. โ€œWhatย happened?โ€

โ€œI can barely talk, shuck-face!โ€ Minho yelled, his voice raw. โ€œGet me some water!โ€

Alby looked over at Thomas, who was shocked to see the slightest hint of a smile flash across his face before vanishing in a scowl. โ€œMinhoโ€™s the only shank who can talk to me like that without getting his butt kicked off the Cliff.โ€

Then, surprising Thomas even more, Alby turned and ran off, presumably to get Minho some water.

Thomas turned toward Minho. โ€œHe lets you boss him around?โ€ Minho shrugged, then wiped fresh beads of sweat off his forehead.

โ€œYou scared of that pip-squeak? Dude, you got a lot to learn. Freakinโ€™ Newbies.โ€

The rebuke hurt Thomas far more than it should have, considering heโ€™d known this guy all of three minutes. โ€œIsnโ€™t he the leader?โ€

โ€œLeader?โ€ Minho barked a grunt that was probably supposed to be a laugh. โ€œYeah, call him leader all you want. Maybe we should call him El Presidente. Nah, nahโ€”Admiral Alby. There you go.โ€ He rubbed his eyes, snickering as he did so.

Thomas didnโ€™t know what to make of the conversationโ€”it was hard to tell when Minho was joking. โ€œSo whoย isย the leader if he isnโ€™t?โ€

โ€œGreenie, just shut it before you confuse yourself more.โ€ Minho sighed as if bored, then muttered, almost to himself, โ€œWhy do you shanks always come in here asking stupid questions? Itโ€™s really annoying.โ€

โ€œWhat do you expect us to do?โ€ Thomas felt a flush of anger.ย Like you were any different when you first came, he wanted to say.

โ€œDo what youโ€™re told, keep your mouth shut. Thatโ€™s what I expect.โ€

Minho had looked him square in the face for the first time with that last sentence, and Thomas scooted back a few inches before he could stop himself. He realized immediately heโ€™d just made a mistakeโ€”he couldnโ€™t let this guy think he could talk to him like that.

He pushed himself back up onto his knees so he was looking down at the older boy. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m sure thatโ€™s exactly what you did as a Newbie.โ€

Minho looked at Thomas carefully. Then, again staring straight in his eyes, said, โ€œI was one of the first Gladers, slinthead. Shut your hole till you know what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

Thomas, now slightly scared of the guy but mostly fed up with his

attitude, moved to get up. Minhoโ€™s hand snapped out and grabbed his arm.

โ€œDude, sit down. Iโ€™m just playinโ€™ with your head. Itโ€™s too much fun

โ€”youโ€™ll see when the next Newbie โ€ฆโ€ He trailed off, a perplexed look wrinkling his eyebrows. โ€œGuess there wonโ€™tย beย another Newbie, huh?โ€

Thomas relaxed, returned to a sitting position, surprised at how easily heโ€™d been put back at ease. He thought of the girl and the note saying she was the last one ever. โ€œGuess not.โ€

Minho squinted slightly, as if he was studying Thomas. โ€œYou saw the chick, right? Everybody says you probably know her or something.โ€

Thomas felt himself grow defensive. โ€œI saw her. Doesnโ€™t really look familiar at all.โ€ He felt immediately guilty for lyingโ€”even if it was just a little lie.

โ€œShe hot?โ€

Thomas paused, not having thought of her in that way since sheโ€™d freaked out and delivered the note and her one-linerโ€”Everything is going to change. But he remembered how beautiful she was. โ€œYeah, I guess sheโ€™s hot.โ€

Minho leaned back until he lay flat, eyes closed. โ€œYeah, you guess.

If you got a thing for chicks in comas, right?โ€ He snickered again.

โ€œRight.โ€ Thomas was having the hardest time figuring out if he liked Minho or notโ€”his personality seemed to change every minute. After a long pause, Thomas decided to take a chance. โ€œSo โ€ฆ,โ€ he asked cautiously, โ€œdid you find anything today?โ€

Minhoโ€™s eyes opened wide; he focused on Thomas. โ€œYou know what, Greenie? Thatโ€™s usually the dumbest shuck-faced thing you could ask a Runner.โ€ He closed his eyes again. โ€œBut not today.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Thomas dared to hope for information.ย An answer, he thought. Please just give me an answer!

โ€œJust wait till the fancy admiral gets back. I donโ€™t like saying stuff twice. Plus, he might not want you to hear it anyway.โ€

Thomas sighed. He wasnโ€™t in the least bit surprised at the non- answer. โ€œWell, at least tell me why you look so tired. Donโ€™t you run out there every day?โ€

Minho groaned as he pulled himself up and crossed his legs under

him. โ€œYeah, Greenie, I run out there every day. Letโ€™s just say I got a little excited and ran extra fast to get my bee-hind back here.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Thomas desperately wanted to hear about what happened out in the Maze.

Minho threw his hands up. โ€œDude. I told you. Patience. Wait for General Alby.โ€

Something in his voice lessened the blow, and Thomas made his decision. He liked Minho. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll shut up. Just make sure Alby lets me hear the news, too.โ€

Minho studied him for a second. โ€œOkay, Greenie. You da boss.โ€

Alby walked up a moment later with a big plastic cup full of water and handed it to Minho, who gulped down the whole thing without stopping once for breath.

โ€œOkay,โ€ Alby said, โ€œout with it. What happened?โ€ Minho raised his eyebrows and nodded toward Thomas.

โ€œHeโ€™s fine,โ€ Alby replied. โ€œI donโ€™t care what this shank hears. Just talk!โ€

Thomas sat quietly in anticipation as Minho struggled to stand up, wincing with every move, his whole demeanor justย screamingย exhaustion. The Runner balanced himself against the wall, gave both of them a cold look. โ€œI found a dead one.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ Alby asked. โ€œA dead what?โ€ Minho smiled. โ€œA dead Griever.โ€
