Chapter no 17 – โ€‹โ€‹LEO

The Lost Hero

โ€ŒLeo mas totally buzzing.โ€Œ

The expression on everyoneโ€™s faces when he flew the dragon into camp? Priceless! He thought his cabinmates were going to bust a lug nut.

Festus had been awesome too. He hadnโ€™t blowtorched a single cabin or eaten any satyrs, even if he did dribble a little oil from his ear. Okay, aย lotย of oil. Leo could work on that later.

So maybe Leo didnโ€™t seize the chance to tell everybody about Bunker 9 or the flying boat design. He needed some time to think about all that. He could tell them when he came back.

Ifย I come back, part of him thought.

Nah, heโ€™d come back. Heโ€™d scored a sweet magic tool belt from the bunker, plus a lot of cool supplies now safely stowed in his backpack. Besides, he had a fire-breathing, only slightly leaky dragon on his side. What could go wrong?

Well, the control disk could bust,ย the bad part of him suggested.ย Festus could eat you.

Okay, so the dragon wasnโ€™tย quiteย as fixed as Leo mightโ€™ve let on. Heโ€™d worked all night attaching those wings, but he hadnโ€™t found an extra dragon brain anywhere in the bunker. Hey, they were under a time limit! Three days until the solstice. They had to get going. Besides, Leo had cleaned the disk pretty well. Most of the circuits were still good. It would just have to hold together.

His bad side started to think,ย Yeah, but what ifโ€”

โ€œShut up, me,โ€ Leo said aloud. โ€œWhat?โ€ Piper asked.

โ€œNothing,โ€ he said. โ€œLong night. I think Iโ€™m hallucinating. Itโ€™s cool.โ€

Sitting in front, Leo couldnโ€™t see their faces, but he assumed from their silence that his friends were not pleased to have a sleepless, hallucinating dragon driver.

โ€œJust joking.โ€ Leo decided it might be good to change the subject. โ€œSo whatโ€™s the plan, bro? You said something about catching wind, or breaking wind, or something?โ€

As they flew over New England, Jason laid out the game plan: First, find some guy named Boreas and grill him for informationโ€”

โ€œHis name isย Boreas?โ€ Leo had to ask. โ€œWhat is he, the God of Boring?โ€

Second, Jason continued, they had to find thoseย ventiย that had attacked them at the Grand Canyonโ€”

โ€œCan we just call them storm spirits?โ€ Leo asked. โ€œVentiย makes them sound like evil espresso drinks.โ€

And third, Jason finished, they had to find out who the storm spirits worked for, so they could find Hera and free her.

โ€œSo you want to look for Dylan, the nasty storm dude,ย on purpose,โ€ Leo said. โ€œThe guy who threw me off the skywalk and sucked Coach Hedge into the clouds.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s about it,โ€ Jason said. โ€œWell โ€ฆ there may be a wolf involved, too. But I think sheโ€™s friendly. She probably wonโ€™t eat us, unless we show weakness.โ€

Jason told them about his dreamโ€”the big nasty mother wolf and a burned-out house with stone spires growing out of the swimming pool.

โ€œUh-huh,โ€ Leo said. โ€œBut you donโ€™t know where this place is.โ€ โ€œNope,โ€ Jason admitted.

โ€œThereโ€™s also giants,โ€ Piper added. โ€œThe prophecy saidย the giantsโ€™ revenge.โ€

โ€œHold on,โ€ Leo said. โ€œGiantsโ€”like more than one? Why canโ€™t it be just one giant who wants revenge?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think so,โ€ Piper said. โ€œI remember in some of the old Greek stories, there was something about an army of giants.โ€

โ€œGreat,โ€ Leo muttered. โ€œOf course, with our luck, itโ€™s an army. So you know anything else about these giants? Didnโ€™t you do a bunch of myth research for that movie with your dad?โ€

โ€œYour dadโ€™s an actor?โ€ Jason asked.

Leo laughed. โ€œI keep forgetting about your amnesia. Heh. Forgetting about amnesia. Thatโ€™s funny. But yeah, her dadโ€™s Tristan McLean.โ€

โ€œUhโ€”Sorry, what was he in?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter,โ€ Piper said quickly. โ€œThe giantsโ€”well, there were lots of giants in Greek mythology. But if Iโ€™m thinking of the right ones, they were bad news. Huge, almost impossible to kill. They could throw mountains and stuff. I think they were related to the Titans. They rose from the earth after Kronos lost the warโ€”I mean theย firstย Titan war, thousands of years agoโ€”and they tried to destroy Olympus. If weโ€™re talking about the same giantsโ€”โ€

โ€œChiron said it was happening again,โ€ Jason remembered. โ€œThe last chapter. Thatโ€™s what he meant. No wonder he didnโ€™t want us to know all the details.โ€

Leo whistled. โ€œSo โ€ฆ giants who can throw mountains. Friendly wolves that will eat us if we show weakness. Evil espresso drinks. Gotcha. Maybe this isnโ€™t the time to bring up my psycho babysitter.โ€

โ€œIs that another joke?โ€ Piper asked.

Leo told them about Tรญa Callida, who was really Hera, and how sheโ€™d appeared to him at camp. He didnโ€™t tell them about his fire abilities. That was still a touchy subject, especially after Nyssa had told him fire demigods tended to destroy cities and stuff. Besides, then Leo would have to get into how heโ€™d caused his momโ€™s death, and โ€ฆ No. He wasnโ€™t ready to go there. He did manage to tell about the night she died, not mentioning the fire, just saying the machine shop collapsed. It was easier without having to look at his friends, just keeping his eyes straight ahead as they flew.

And he told them about the strange woman in earthen robes who seemed to be asleep, and seemed to know the future.

Leo estimated the whole state of Massachusetts passed below them before his friends spoke.

โ€œThatโ€™s โ€ฆ disturbing,โ€ Piper said.

โ€œโ€™Bout sums it up,โ€ Leo agreed. โ€œThing is, everybody says donโ€™t trust Hera. She hates demigods. And the prophecy said weโ€™d cause death if we unleash her rage. So Iโ€™m wondering โ€ฆ why are we doing this?โ€

โ€œShe chose us,โ€ Jason said. โ€œAll three of us. Weโ€™re the first of the seven who have to gather for the Great Prophecy. This quest is the beginning of something much bigger.โ€

That didnโ€™t make Leo feel any better, but he couldnโ€™t argue with Jasonโ€™s point. Itย didย feel like this was the start of something huge. He just wished that if there were four more demigods destined to help them, theyโ€™d show up quick. Leo didnโ€™t want to hog all the terrifying life-threatening adventures.

โ€œBesides,โ€ Jason continued, โ€œhelping Hera is the only way I can get back my memory. And that dark spire in my dream seemed to be feeding on Heraโ€™s energy. If that thing unleashes a king of the giants by destroying Heraโ€”โ€

โ€œNot a good trade-off,โ€ Piper agreed. โ€œAt least Hera is on our sideโ€” mostly. Losing her would throw the gods into chaos. Sheโ€™s the main one who keeps peace in the family. And a war with the giants could be even more destructive than the Titan War.โ€

Jason nodded. โ€œChiron also talked about worse forces stirring on the solstice, with it being a good time for dark magic, and allโ€”something that could awaken if Hera were sacrificed on that day. And this mistress whoโ€™s controlling the storm spirits, the one who wants to kill all the demigodsโ€”โ€

โ€œMight be that weird sleeping lady,โ€ Leo finished. โ€œDirt Woman fully awake? Not something I want to see.โ€

โ€œBut who is she?โ€ Jason asked. โ€œAnd what does she have to do with giants?โ€

Good questions, but none of them had answers. They flew in silence while Leo wondered if heโ€™d done the right thing, sharing so much. Heโ€™d never told anyone about that night at the warehouse. Even if he hadnโ€™t give them the whole story, it still felt strange, like heโ€™d opened up his chest and taken out all the gears that made him tick. His body was shaking, and not from the cold. He hoped Piper, sitting behind him, couldnโ€™t tell.

The forge and dove shall break the cage.ย Wasnโ€™t that the prophecy line? That meant Piper and he would have to figure out how to break into that magic rock prison, assuming they could find it. Then theyโ€™d unleash Heraโ€™s rage, causing a lot of death. Well, that sounded fun! Leo had seen Tรญa Callida in action; she liked knives, snakes, and putting babies in roaring fires. Yeah, definitely letโ€™s unleash her rage. Great idea.

Festus kept flying. The wind got colder, and below them snowy forests seemed to go on forever. Leo didnโ€™t know exactly where Quebec was. Heโ€™d told Festus to take them to the palace of Boreas, and Festus kept going north. Hopefully, the dragon knew the way, and they wouldnโ€™t end up at the North Pole.

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get some sleep?โ€ Piper said in his ear. โ€œYou were up all night.โ€

Leo wanted to protest, but the wordย sleepย sounded really good. โ€œYou wonโ€™t let me fall off?โ€

Piper patted his shoulder. โ€œTrust me, Valdez. Beautiful people never lie.โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ he muttered. He leaned forward against the warm bronze of the dragonโ€™s neck, and closed his eyes.
