Chapter no 85

The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, 1)

Avery.โ€ Rebecca stared down at me. โ€œWhat are you doing down there?โ€ She sounded perfectly normal, but all I could think was that Rebecca Laughlin had been on the estate the night Drake had shot at me. She didnโ€™t have an alibi, because when weโ€™d arrived at Wayback Cottage, she wasnโ€™t there, and neither of her grandparents knew where she was. Sheโ€™d said something aboutย warningย me.

The next day, Rebecca had lookedโ€”according to Theaโ€”like sheโ€™d been crying.ย Why?

โ€œWhere were you,โ€ I asked her, my mouth going dry, โ€œthe night of the shooting?โ€

Rebecca closed her eyes. โ€œYou donโ€™t know what itโ€™s like,โ€ she said softly, โ€œto have your entire life revolve around one person, and then you wake up one day, and that person is gone.โ€

That wasnโ€™t an answer to my question. I thought about Thea telling me that she was only doing what Emily would have wanted.

What would Emily have wanted Rebecca to do to me?

Xander needed to get back hereโ€”quick.

โ€œIt was my fault, you know,โ€ Rebecca said up above, her eyes still closed. โ€œEmily was taking huge risks. I told our parents. They grounded her, forbade her from seeing the Hawthornes. But Em had her ways. She convinced our mom and dad that she was done acting out. They didnโ€™t lift the ban on the boys, but they did start letting her hang out with Thea again.โ€

โ€œThea,โ€ I repeated, โ€œwho you were secretly dating.โ€

Rebeccaโ€™s eyelids shot open. โ€œEmily found us together that afternoon. She wasโ€ฆย angry. As soon as she got me alone, she told me that what Thea and I had wasnโ€™t love, that if Theaย reallyย loved me, she never would have pretended to be with Xander. Emily saidโ€ฆโ€ Rebecca was caught up in memory now, fully.ย Violently.ย โ€œShe told me that Thea loved her moreโ€”and

she would prove it. She asked Thea to cover about the cliff diving. I begged Thea not to, but she said that after everything, we owed it to Em.โ€

Thea had covered for Emily the night she had died.

โ€œMost of the things Emily talked the boys into, sheย couldย do, but even professional cliff divers donโ€™t jump from the top of Devilโ€™s Gate. It would have been dangerous for anyone, but that much adrenaline, that much cortisol, a change in altitude and pressure, withย herย heart?โ€ Rebecca was speaking so softly now that I wasnโ€™t sure she truly remembered I was listening. โ€œIโ€™d tried telling my parents what she was doing, and that didnโ€™t work. Iโ€™d tried begging Thea, and sheโ€™d chosen Emily over me. So I decided to go to Jameson. He was the one who was supposed to take her to Devilโ€™s Gate.โ€

Rebeccaโ€™s head dipped, deep red hair falling into her face. Thea was rightโ€”Rebecca Laughlin was beautiful. But right now she didnโ€™t look quite right.

โ€œI had a voice recording,โ€ she said softly, โ€œof Emily talking. She used to tell me everything the boys did with her and for her and to her. She liked to keep score.โ€ Rebecca paused, and when she spoke again, her voice was sharper-edged. โ€œI played the recording for Jameson. I told myself that I was doing it to protect my sister, to keep him from taking her to the cliffs. But the truth was, sheโ€™d taken Thea away from me.โ€

So you took something away from her, I thought. โ€œJameson broke up with her,โ€ I said. Heโ€™d told me that much.

โ€œIf he hadnโ€™t,โ€ Rebecca replied, โ€œmaybe she wouldnโ€™t have needed to push things so much. Maybe she would have relented and jumped from one of the lower cliffs. Maybe it would have been okay.โ€ Her voice got even softer. โ€œIf Emily hadnโ€™t caught Thea and me together that afternoon, if she hadnโ€™t seen our relationship as such a betrayalโ€”she might not have needed to jump at all.โ€

Rebecca blamed herself. Thea blamed the boys. Grayson took the weight of all of it onto himself.ย And Jamesonโ€ฆ

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ Rebeccaโ€™s apology jarred me from my thoughts. Her tone told me she wasnโ€™t talking about Emily anymore. She wasnโ€™t talking about something that had happened over a year ago.

โ€œSorry for what?โ€ I asked.ย What are you doing down here, Rebecca?

โ€œItโ€™s not that I have anything against you. But itโ€™s what Emily would

have wanted.โ€

She is not well.ย I had to find a way out of here. I had to get away from her.

โ€œEmily would have hated you for stealing their money. She would have hated the way they look at you.โ€

โ€œSo you decided to get rid of me,โ€ I said, stalling for time. โ€œFor Emily.โ€ Rebecca stared at me. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYou knew about the tunnels, and somehow, you told Drakeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo,โ€ย Rebecca insisted. โ€œAvery, I wouldnโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œYou said it yourself. Emily would have wanted me gone.โ€ โ€œIโ€™mย notย Emily.โ€ The words were guttural.

โ€œThen what were you apologizing for?โ€ I asked.

Rebecca swallowed. โ€œMr. Hawthorne told me about the tunnels one summer when I was little. He showed me all the entrances, said I deserved something that was just mine. A secret. I come down here when I need to get awayโ€”sometimes when Iโ€™m visiting my grandparents, but since Emily died, things are pretty awful at home, so sometimes I enter from the outside.โ€

I waited. โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œThe night of the shooting, I saw someone else in the tunnels. I didnโ€™t say anything, because Emily wouldnโ€™t have wanted me to. I owed her, Avery. After what I didโ€”I owed her.โ€

โ€œWho did you see?โ€ I asked. She didnโ€™t answer. โ€œDrake?โ€ Rebecca met my eyes. โ€œHe wasnโ€™t alone.โ€

โ€œWho else was there?โ€ I waited.ย Nothing.ย โ€œRebecca, who else was in the tunnel with Drake?โ€

Who would Emily have wanted her to protect?

โ€œOne of the boys?โ€ I asked, feeling like the ground was crumbling beneath me.

โ€œNo,โ€ Rebecca said quietly. โ€œTheir mother.โ€
