Avery.โ Rebecca stared down at me. โWhat are you doing down there?โ She sounded perfectly normal, but all I could think was that Rebecca Laughlin had been on the estate the night Drake had shot at me. She didnโt have an alibi, because when weโd arrived at Wayback Cottage, she wasnโt there, and neither of her grandparents knew where she was. Sheโd said something aboutย warningย me.
The next day, Rebecca had lookedโaccording to Theaโlike sheโd been crying.ย Why?
โWhere were you,โ I asked her, my mouth going dry, โthe night of the shooting?โ
Rebecca closed her eyes. โYou donโt know what itโs like,โ she said softly, โto have your entire life revolve around one person, and then you wake up one day, and that person is gone.โ
That wasnโt an answer to my question. I thought about Thea telling me that she was only doing what Emily would have wanted.
What would Emily have wanted Rebecca to do to me?
Xander needed to get back hereโquick.
โIt was my fault, you know,โ Rebecca said up above, her eyes still closed. โEmily was taking huge risks. I told our parents. They grounded her, forbade her from seeing the Hawthornes. But Em had her ways. She convinced our mom and dad that she was done acting out. They didnโt lift the ban on the boys, but they did start letting her hang out with Thea again.โ
โThea,โ I repeated, โwho you were secretly dating.โ
Rebeccaโs eyelids shot open. โEmily found us together that afternoon. She wasโฆย angry. As soon as she got me alone, she told me that what Thea and I had wasnโt love, that if Theaย reallyย loved me, she never would have pretended to be with Xander. Emily saidโฆโ Rebecca was caught up in memory now, fully.ย Violently.ย โShe told me that Thea loved her moreโand
she would prove it. She asked Thea to cover about the cliff diving. I begged Thea not to, but she said that after everything, we owed it to Em.โ
Thea had covered for Emily the night she had died.
โMost of the things Emily talked the boys into, sheย couldย do, but even professional cliff divers donโt jump from the top of Devilโs Gate. It would have been dangerous for anyone, but that much adrenaline, that much cortisol, a change in altitude and pressure, withย herย heart?โ Rebecca was speaking so softly now that I wasnโt sure she truly remembered I was listening. โIโd tried telling my parents what she was doing, and that didnโt work. Iโd tried begging Thea, and sheโd chosen Emily over me. So I decided to go to Jameson. He was the one who was supposed to take her to Devilโs Gate.โ
Rebeccaโs head dipped, deep red hair falling into her face. Thea was rightโRebecca Laughlin was beautiful. But right now she didnโt look quite right.
โI had a voice recording,โ she said softly, โof Emily talking. She used to tell me everything the boys did with her and for her and to her. She liked to keep score.โ Rebecca paused, and when she spoke again, her voice was sharper-edged. โI played the recording for Jameson. I told myself that I was doing it to protect my sister, to keep him from taking her to the cliffs. But the truth was, sheโd taken Thea away from me.โ
So you took something away from her, I thought. โJameson broke up with her,โ I said. Heโd told me that much.
โIf he hadnโt,โ Rebecca replied, โmaybe she wouldnโt have needed to push things so much. Maybe she would have relented and jumped from one of the lower cliffs. Maybe it would have been okay.โ Her voice got even softer. โIf Emily hadnโt caught Thea and me together that afternoon, if she hadnโt seen our relationship as such a betrayalโshe might not have needed to jump at all.โ
Rebecca blamed herself. Thea blamed the boys. Grayson took the weight of all of it onto himself.ย And Jamesonโฆ
โIโm sorry.โ Rebeccaโs apology jarred me from my thoughts. Her tone told me she wasnโt talking about Emily anymore. She wasnโt talking about something that had happened over a year ago.
โSorry for what?โ I asked.ย What are you doing down here, Rebecca?
โItโs not that I have anything against you. But itโs what Emily would
have wanted.โ
She is not well.ย I had to find a way out of here. I had to get away from her.
โEmily would have hated you for stealing their money. She would have hated the way they look at you.โ
โSo you decided to get rid of me,โ I said, stalling for time. โFor Emily.โ Rebecca stared at me. โNo.โ
โYou knew about the tunnels, and somehow, you told Drakeโฆโ
โNo,โย Rebecca insisted. โAvery, I wouldnโt do that.โ
โYou said it yourself. Emily would have wanted me gone.โ โIโmย notย Emily.โ The words were guttural.
โThen what were you apologizing for?โ I asked.
Rebecca swallowed. โMr. Hawthorne told me about the tunnels one summer when I was little. He showed me all the entrances, said I deserved something that was just mine. A secret. I come down here when I need to get awayโsometimes when Iโm visiting my grandparents, but since Emily died, things are pretty awful at home, so sometimes I enter from the outside.โ
I waited. โAnd?โ
โThe night of the shooting, I saw someone else in the tunnels. I didnโt say anything, because Emily wouldnโt have wanted me to. I owed her, Avery. After what I didโI owed her.โ
โWho did you see?โ I asked. She didnโt answer. โDrake?โ Rebecca met my eyes. โHe wasnโt alone.โ
โWho else was there?โ I waited.ย Nothing.ย โRebecca, who else was in the tunnel with Drake?โ
Who would Emily have wanted her to protect?
โOne of the boys?โ I asked, feeling like the ground was crumbling beneath me.
โNo,โ Rebecca said quietly. โTheir mother.โ
