Chapter no 43

The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, 1)

Iย thought you said youโ€™d take care of Drake.โ€ My fingers tightenedย around my cell phone, and my free hand wound itself into a fist at my side. โ€œFor fun.โ€

Iโ€™d called Alisa the moment Iโ€™d made it to the car. Grayson had followed and buckled himself into the back seat beside me. I didnโ€™t have the time or mental space to dwell on his presence beside me. Oren was driving. I was pissed.

โ€œIย didย take care of him,โ€ Alisa assured me. โ€œYou and your sister are both in possession of temporary restraining orders. If Drake attempts to contact or comes within a thousand feet of either of you for any reason, heโ€™s facing arrest.โ€

I forced my fingers out of the fist but couldnโ€™t manage to loosen my grip on the phone. โ€œThen why is he at the gates of Hawthorne House right now?โ€

Drake was here. In Texas. When Nash had called, Libby was safely inside, but Drake was spamming her phone with texts and calls, demanding a face-to-face.

โ€œIโ€™ll handle this, Avery.โ€ Alisa recovered almost instantly. โ€œThe firm has some contacts on the local police force who know how to be discreet.โ€

Right now, beingย discreetย wasnโ€™t my priority. My priority was Libby. โ€œDoes my sister know about this restraining order?โ€

โ€œShe signed the paperwork.โ€ That was a hedge if Iโ€™d ever heard one. โ€œIโ€™ll handle it, Avery. You just lie low.โ€ She hung up, and I let the hand holding my phone drop into my lap.

โ€œCan you drive any faster?โ€ I asked Oren.

Libby had her own security detail. Drake wouldnโ€™t get a chance to hurt herโ€”physically.

โ€œNash is with your sister.โ€ Grayson spoke for the first time since weโ€™d

entered the car. โ€œIf the gentleman so much as tries to lay a finger on her, I assure you, my brother would take pleasure in removing that finger.โ€

I wasnโ€™t sure if Grayson was referring to separating said finger from Libbyโ€™s bodyโ€”or from Drakeโ€™s.

โ€œDrake isnโ€™t a gentleman,โ€ I told Grayson. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not just worried about him getting violent.โ€ I was worried about him being sweet, worried that, instead of losing his temper, heโ€™d be so kind and tender that sheโ€™d start to question the fading bruise ringing her eye.

โ€œIf it would make you feel better, I can have him removed from the property,โ€ Oren offered. โ€œBut that might cause a bit of a scene for the press.โ€

The press?ย My brain clicked into gear. โ€œThere werenโ€™t any paparazzi at the foundation.โ€ Iโ€™d noted that when weโ€™d arrived. โ€œTheyโ€™re back at the house?โ€

The wall around the estate could keep the press off the property, but there was nothing stopping them from congregating, legally, on a public street.

โ€œIf I were a betting man,โ€ Oren commented, โ€œI would guess that Drake placed a few calls to reporters to ensure an audience.โ€

There was nothing discreet about the scene that greeted us when Oren pulled up to the drive, past a verifiable horde of press. Up ahead, I could see Drakeโ€™s form outside the wrought-iron gates. There were two other men standing near him. Even from a distance, I could make out their police uniforms.

And so could the paparazzi.

So much for Alisaโ€™s friends on the police force being discreet. I gritted my teeth and thought about the way Drake would guilt Libby if there was footage of him being dragged down the drive.

โ€œStop the car,โ€ I snapped.

Oren stopped, then turned around in his seat to face me. โ€œI would advise you to stay in this vehicle.โ€ That wasnโ€™t advice. That was an order.

I reached for the door handle.

โ€œAvery.โ€ Orenโ€™s tone stopped me dead in my tracks. โ€œIf youโ€™re getting

out, Iโ€™m getting out first.โ€

Remembering our little one-on-one that morning, I decided not to test him.

Beside me, Grayson unbuckled his seat belt. He reached for my wrist, his touch gentle. โ€œOrenโ€™s right. You shouldnโ€™t go out there.โ€

I looked down at his hand on mine, and after a heartbeat, I looked back up. โ€œAnd what would you do,โ€ I said, โ€œwhat lengths would you go to in order to protectย yourย family?โ€

I had him there, and he damn well knew it. He drew his hand back from mine, slowly enough that I felt the pads of his fingers skim my knuckles. My breath coming quickly now, I opened the car door and braced myself. Drake was the biggest story the press had on the Hawthorne Heiress front because we hadnโ€™t given them anything bigger. Yet.

Chin held high, I stepped out of the car.ย Look at me. Iโ€™m the story here.ย I walked down the drive, back toward the street. I was wearing boots with heels and my Country Day pleated skirt. My uniform blazer pulled against my body as I walked. The new hair. The makeup. The attitude.

Iโ€™m the story here.ย The chatter tonight wasnโ€™t going to be about Drake.

The eyes of the world werenโ€™t going to be on him. Iโ€™d keep them on me. โ€œImpromptu press conference?โ€ Oren asked under his breath. โ€œAs your

bodyguard, I feel compelled to warn you that Alisa is going toย killย you.โ€

That was Future Averyโ€™s problem. I tossed my wave-perfect hair and squared my shoulders. The roar of reporters yelling my name was louder the closer we got.

โ€œAvery!โ€

โ€œAvery, look over here!โ€

โ€œAvery, what do you have to say about rumors thatโ€”โ€ โ€œSmile, Avery!โ€

I was standing right in front of them now. I had their attention. Beside me, Oren raised a hand, and just like that, the crowd went silent.

Say something. Iโ€™m supposed to say something.

โ€œIโ€ฆ ummmโ€ฆโ€ I cleared my throat. โ€œThis has been a big change.โ€

There were a few small laughs.ย I can do this.ย The instant I thought those words, the universe made me pay for them. A fight broke out behind me, between Drake and the cops. I saw cameras starting to angle away from me, saw the long-distance lenses zooming in on the gates.

Donโ€™t just talk. Tell the story. Make them listen.

โ€œI know why Tobias Hawthorne changed his will,โ€ I said loudly. The response to that announcement was electric. There was a reason this was the story of the decade, one thing that everyone wanted to know. โ€œI know why he chose me.โ€ I made them look at me and only me. โ€œIโ€™m the only one who does. I know the truth.โ€ I sold that lie for all I was worth. โ€œAnd if you run a word about that pathetic excuse for a human being behind meโ€”any of you

โ€”I will make it my mission in life to ensure that you never, ever find out.โ€
