Chapter no 39

The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo, #1)

Want to hit Leo?โ€Œ

That is understandable Hunk Muffin earned it

THE DEMIGODS HAD TO TAKE NUMBERS.

Nico commandeered a dispenser from the snack bar and carried it around, yelling, โ€œThe line starts to the left! Orderly queue, guys!โ€

โ€œIs this really necessary?โ€ Leo asked.

โ€œYes,โ€ said Miranda Gardiner, who had drawn the first number. She punched Leo in the arm.

โ€œOw,โ€ said Leo.

โ€œYouโ€™re a jerk, and we all hate you,โ€ said Miranda. Then she hugged him and kissed his cheek. โ€œIf you ever disappear like that again, weโ€™ll line up toย kill you.โ€

โ€œOkay, okay!โ€

Miranda had to move on, because the line was getting pretty long behind her. Percy and I sat at the picnic table with Leo and his companionโ€”none other than the immortal sorceress Calypso. Even though Leo was the one getting punched by everyone in camp, I was reasonably sure he was theย leastย uncomfortable one at the table.

When they first saw each other, Percy and Calypso had hugged awkwardly. I hadnโ€™t witnessed such a tense greeting since Patroclus met Achillesโ€™s war prize, Briseis. (Long story. Juicy gossip. Ask me later.) Calypso had never liked me, so she pointedly ignored me, but I kept waiting for her to yell โ€œBOO!โ€ and turn me into a tree frog. The suspense was killing me.

Percy hugged Leo and didnโ€™t even punch him. Still, the son of Poseidon looked disgruntled.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe it,โ€ he said. โ€œSix monthsโ€”โ€

โ€œI told you,โ€ Leo said. โ€œWe tried sending more holographic scrolls. We tried Iris messages, dream visions, phone calls. Nothing worked.โ€”Ow! Hey, Alice, how you doing?โ€”Anyway, we ran into one crisis after another.โ€

Calypso nodded. โ€œAlbania was particularly difficult.โ€

From down the line, Nico di Angelo yelled, โ€œPlease do not mention Albania! Okay, whoโ€™s next, folks? One line.โ€

Damien White punched Leoโ€™s arm and walked away grinning. I wasnโ€™t sure Damien even knew Leo. He simply couldnโ€™t turn down a chance to punch someone.

Leo rubbed his bicep. โ€œHey, no fair. That guyโ€™s getting back in the line.

So, like I was saying, if Festus hadnโ€™t picked up on that homing beacon yesterday, weโ€™d still be flying around, looking for a way out of the Sea of Monsters.โ€

โ€œOh, I hate that place,โ€ Percy said. โ€œThereโ€™s this big Cyclops, Polyphemusโ€”โ€

โ€œI know, right?โ€ Leo agreed. โ€œWhat is up with that guyโ€™sย breath?โ€ โ€œBoys,โ€ Calypso said, โ€œperhaps we should focus on the present?โ€

She did not look at me, but I got the impression she meantย this silly former god and his problems.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Percy said. โ€œSo the communication issuesโ€ฆRachel Dare thinks itโ€™s got something to do with this company, Triumvirate.โ€

Rachel herself had gone to the Big House to fetch Chiron, but Percy did a reasonable job summarizing what she had found out about the emperors and their evil corporation. Of course, we didnโ€™t know very much. By the

time six more people had punched Leo in the arm, Percy had brought Leo and Calypso up to speed.

Leo rubbed his new bruises. โ€œMan, why does it not surprise me that modern corporations are run by zombie Roman emperors?โ€

โ€œThey are not zombies,โ€ I said. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not sure they runย all

corporationsโ€”โ€

Leo waved away my explanation. โ€œBut theyโ€™re trying to take over the Oracles.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I agreed. โ€œAnd thatโ€™s bad.โ€

โ€œVery.โ€

โ€œSo you need our help.โ€”Ow! Hey, Sherman. Whereโ€™d you get the new scar, dude?โ€

While Sherman told Leo the story of Crotchkicker McCaffrey and the Demon Peach Baby, I glanced at Calypso.

She looked very different from what I remembered. Her hair was still long and caramel brown. Her almond-shaped eyes were still dark and intelligent. But now, instead of aย chitonย she wore modern jeans, a white blouse, and a shocking-pink ski jacket. She looked youngerโ€”about my mortal age. I wondered if she had been punished with mortality for leaving her enchanted island. If so, it didnโ€™t seem fair that she had retained her otherworldly beauty. She had neither flab nor acne.

As I watched, she stretched two fingers toward the opposite end of the

picnic table, where a pitcher of lemonade sweated in the sunlight. I had seen her do this sort of thing before, willing her invisible aerial servants to whisk objects into her hands. This time, nothing happened.

A look of disappointment crossed her face. Then she realized I was watching. Her cheeks colored.

โ€œSince leaving Ogygia, I have no powers,โ€ she admitted. โ€œI am fully mortal. I keep hoping, butโ€”โ€

โ€œYou want a drink?โ€ Percy asked.

โ€œI got it.โ€ Leo beat him to the pitcher.

I had not expected to feel sympathy for Calypso. Weโ€™d had harsh words in the past. A few millennia ago, I had opposed her petition for early release from Ogygia because of someโ€ฆah, drama between us. (Long story. Juicy gossip. Pleaseย do notย ask me later.)

Still, as a fallen god, I understood how disconcerting it was to be without oneโ€™s powers.

On the other hand, I was relieved. This meant she could not turn me into a tree frog or order her aerial servants to toss me off the Athena Parthenos.

โ€œHere you go.โ€ Leo handed her a glass of lemonade. His expression seemed darker and more anxious, as ifโ€ฆAh, of course. Leo had rescued Calypso from her prison island. In doing so, Calypso had lost her powers. Leo felt responsible.

Calypso smiled, though her eyes were still touched by melancholy. โ€œThank you, babe.โ€

โ€œBabe?โ€ย Percy asked.

Leoโ€™s expression brightened. โ€œYeah. She wonโ€™t call me Hunk Muffin, though. I dunno why.โ€”Ow!โ€

It was Harleyโ€™s turn. The little boy punched Leo, then threw his arms around him and broke down sobbing.

โ€œHey, brother.โ€ Leo ruffled his hair and had the good sense to look ashamed. โ€œYou brought me home with that beacon of yours, H-Meister. Youโ€™re a hero! You know I never wouldโ€™ve left you hanging like that on purpose, donโ€™t you?โ€

Harley wailed and sniffled and nodded. Then he punched Leo again and ran away. Leo looked like he was about to get sick. Harley was quite strong.

โ€œAt any rate,โ€ Calypso said, โ€œthese problems with the Roman emperors

โ€”how can we help?โ€

I raised my eyebrows. โ€œYouย willย help me, then? Despiteโ€ฆah, well, I

always knew you were kindhearted and forgiving, Calypso. I meant to visit you at Ogygia more oftenโ€”โ€

โ€œSpare me.โ€ Calypso sipped her lemonade. โ€œIโ€™ll help you ifย Leoย decides to help you, and he seems to have some affection for you. Why, I canโ€™t

imagine.โ€

I let go of the breath I had been holding forโ€ฆoh, an hour. โ€œIโ€™m grateful. Leo Valdez, you have always been a gentleman and a genius. After all, you created the Valdezinator.โ€

Leo grinned. โ€œI did, didnโ€™t I? I suppose that was pretty awesome. So where is this next Oracle youโ€”Ow!โ€

Nyssa had made it to the front of the line. She slapped Leo, then berated him in rapid Spanish.

โ€œYeah, okay, okay.โ€ Leo rubbed his face. โ€œDang,ย hermana, I love you, too!โ€

He turned his attention back to me. โ€œSo this next Oracle, you said it was where?โ€

Percy tapped the picnic table. โ€œChiron and I were talking about this. He figures this triumvirate thingieโ€ฆthey probably divided America into three parts, with one emperor in charge of each. We know Nero is holed up in

New York, so weโ€™re guessing this next Oracle is in the second dudeโ€™s territory, maybe in the middle third of the U.S.โ€

โ€œOh, the middle third of the U.S.!โ€ Leo spread his arms. โ€œPiece of torta, then. Weโ€™ll just search the entire middle of the country!โ€

โ€œStill with the sarcasm,โ€ Percy noted.

โ€œHey, man, Iโ€™ve sailed with the most sarcastic scalawags on the high seas.โ€

The two gave each other a high five, though I did not quite understand why. I thought about a snippet of prophecy Iโ€™d heard in the grove: something about Indiana. It might be a place to startโ€ฆ.

The last person to come through the line was Chiron himself, pushed in his wheelchair by Rachel Dare. The old centaur gave Leo a warm, fatherly smile. โ€œMy boy, I am so pleased to have you back. And you freed Calypso, I see. Well done, and welcome, both of you!โ€ Chiron spread his arms for a hug.

โ€œUh, thanks, Chiron.โ€ Leo leaned forward.

From underneath Chironโ€™s lap blanket, his equine foreleg shot out and implanted a hoof in Leoโ€™s gut. Then, just as quickly, the leg disappeared. โ€œMr. Valdez,โ€ Chiron said in the same kindly tone, โ€œif you ever pull a stunt like that againโ€”โ€

โ€œI got it, I got it!โ€ Leo rubbed his stomach. โ€œDang, for a teacher, you got a heck of a high kick.โ€

Rachel grinned and wheeled Chiron away. Calypso and Percy helped Leo to his feet.

โ€œYo, Nico,โ€ Leo called, โ€œplease tell me thatโ€™s it for the physical abuse.โ€ โ€œFor now.โ€ Nico smiled. โ€œWeโ€™re still trying to get in touch with the West

Coast. Youโ€™ll have a few dozen people out there who will definitely want to hit you.โ€

Leo winced. โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s something to look forward to. Well, I guess Iโ€™d better keep my strength up. Where do you guys eat lunch now that the

Colossus stepped on the dining pavilion?โ€

Percy left that night just before dinner.

I expected a moving one-on-one farewell, during which he would ask my advice about test taking, being a hero, and living life in general. After he lent me his help in defeating the Colossus, it would have been the least I could do.

Instead, he seemed more interested in saying good-bye to Leo and Calypso. I wasnโ€™t part of their conversation, but the three of them seemed to reach some sort of mutual understanding. Percy and Leo embraced. Calypso even pecked Percy on the cheek. Then the son of Poseidon waded into Long Island Sound with his extremely large dog and they both disappeared

underwater. Did Mrs. Oโ€™Leary swim? Did she travel through the shadows of whales? I did not know.

Like lunch, dinner was a casual affair. As darkness fell, we ate on picnic blankets around the hearth, which blazed with Hestiaโ€™s warmth and kept away the winter chill. Festus the dragon sniffed around the perimeter of the cabins, occasionally blowing fire into the sky for no apparent reason.

โ€œHe got a little dinged up in Corsica,โ€ Leo explained. โ€œSometimes he spews randomly like that.โ€

โ€œHe hasnโ€™t blowtorched anyone important yet,โ€ Calypso added, her eyebrow arched. โ€œWeโ€™ll see how he likes you.โ€

Festusโ€™s red jewel eyes gleamed in the darkness. After driving the sun chariot for so long, I wasnโ€™t nervous about riding a metal dragon, but when I thought about what weโ€™d be ridingย toward, geraniums bloomed in my stomach.

โ€œI had planned to go alone,โ€ I told them. โ€œThe prophecy from Dodona

speaks of the bronze fire-eater, butโ€ฆit feels wrong for me to ask you to risk your lives. You have been through so much just to get here.โ€

Calypso tilted her head. โ€œPerhaps youย haveย changed. That does not sound like the Apollo I remember. You definitely are not as handsome.โ€

โ€œI am stillย quiteย handsome,โ€ I protested. โ€œI just need to clear up this acne.โ€

She smirked. โ€œSo you havenโ€™t completely lost your big head.โ€ โ€œI beg your pardon?โ€

โ€œGuys,โ€ Leo interrupted, โ€œif weโ€™re going to travel together, letโ€™s try to keep it friendly.โ€ He pressed an ice pack to his bruised bicep. โ€œBesides, we were planning to head west anyway. I got to find my peeps Jason and Piper and Frank and Hazel andโ€ฆwell, pretty much everybody at Camp Jupiter, I guess. Itโ€™ll be fun.โ€

โ€œFun?โ€ย I asked. โ€œThe Oracle of Trophonius will supposedly swallow me in death and madness. Even if I survive that, my other trials will no doubt be long, harrowing, and quite possibly fatal.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Leo said. โ€œFun. I donโ€™t know about calling the whole quest thingย Apolloโ€™s trials, though. I think we should call itย Leo Valdezโ€™s Victory Lap World Tour.โ€

Calypso laughed and laced her fingers in Leoโ€™s. She may not have been immortal anymore, but she still had a grace and easiness about her that I could not fathom. Perhaps she missed her powers, but she seemed genuinely

happy to be with Valdezโ€”to be young and mortal, even if it meant she could die at any moment.

Unlike me, she hadย chosenย to become mortal. She knew that leaving Ogygia was a risk, but she had done it willingly. I didnโ€™t know how sheโ€™d found the courage.

โ€œHey, man,โ€ Leo told me. โ€œDonโ€™t look so glum. Weโ€™ll find her.โ€ I stirred. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYour friend Meg. Weโ€™ll find her. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

A bubble of darkness burst inside me. For once, I hadnโ€™t been thinking of Meg. Iโ€™d been thinking about myself, and that made me feel guilty. Perhaps Calypso was right to question whether or not Iโ€™d changed.

I gazed at the silent forest. I remembered Meg dragging me to safety when I was cold and soaked and delirious. I remembered how fearlessly she fought the myrmekes, and how sheโ€™d ordered Peaches to extinguish the match when Nero wanted to burn his hostages, despite her fear of unleashing the Beast. I had to make her realize how evil Nero was. I had to find her. But how?

โ€œMeg knows the prophecy,โ€ I said. โ€œIf she tells Nero, he will know our plans as well.โ€

Calypso took a bite of her apple. โ€œI missed the whole Roman Empire.

How bad can one emperor be?โ€

โ€œBad,โ€ I assured her. โ€œAnd he is allied with two others. We donโ€™t know which ones, but itโ€™s safe to assume they are equally cutthroat. Theyโ€™ve had centuries to amass fortunes, acquire property, build armiesโ€ฆWho knows what they are capable of?โ€

โ€œEh,โ€ Leo said. โ€œWe took down Gaea in, like, forty seconds. Thisโ€™ll be easy squeezy.โ€

I seemed to recall that theย lead-upย to the fight with Gaea had involved

months of suffering and near misses with death. Leo, in fact,ย hadย died. I also wanted to remind him that the Triumvirate might well have orchestrated all our previous troubles with the Titans and giants, which would make them

more powerful than anything Leo had ever faced.

I decided that mentioning these things might affect group morale. โ€œWeโ€™ll succeed,โ€ Calypso said. โ€œWe must. So we will. I have been

trapped on an island for thousands of years. I donโ€™t know how long this mortal life will be, but I intend to live fully and without fear.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s myย mamacita,โ€ Leo said.

โ€œWhat have I told you about calling meย mamacita?โ€

Leo grinned sheepishly. โ€œIn the morning weโ€™ll start getting our supplies together. As soon as Festus gets a tune-up and an oil change, weโ€™ll be good to go.โ€

I considered what supplies I would take with me. I had depressingly little: some borrowed clothes, a bow, a ukulele, and an overly theatrical arrow.

But the real difficulty would be saying good-bye to Will, Austin, and Kayla. They had helped me so much, and they embraced me as family more than I had ever embracedย them. Tears stung my eyes. Before I could start sobbing, Will Solace stepped into the light of the hearth. โ€œHey, everybody! Weโ€™ve started a bonfire in the amphitheater! Sing-along time. Come on!โ€

Groans were mixed in with the cheers, but most everyone got to their feet and ambled toward the bonfire now blazing in the distance, where Nico di Angelo stood silhouetted in the flames, preparing rows of marshmallows on what looked like femur bones.

โ€œAw, man.โ€ Leo winced. โ€œIโ€™m terrible at sing-alongs. I always clap and do the โ€˜Old MacDonaldโ€™ sounds at the wrong time. Can we skip this?โ€

โ€œOh, no.โ€ I rose to my feet, suddenly feeling better. Perhaps tomorrow I would weep and think about good-byes. Perhaps the day after that we would be flying toward our deaths. But tonight, I intended to enjoy my time with my family. What had Calypso said?ย Live fully and without fear.ย If she could do it, then so could the brilliant, fabulous Apollo. โ€œSinging is good for the spirits. You should never miss an opportunity to sing.โ€

Calypso smiled. โ€œI canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m saying this, but for once I agree with Apollo. Come on, Leo. Iโ€™ll teach you to harmonize.โ€

Together, the three of us walked toward the sounds of laughter, music, and a warm, crackling fire.
